For Champions Online players and prospective players, this is a big day as the game has officially gone free to play. To celebrate, Cryptic Studios has several items of interest on the main page including an account creation guide, a notice about the C-Store sale, a YouTube trailer and the Free For All launch day patch notes.
Gameplay
It really is the small things that make the difference. With that in mind we started off small and then just went off the charts. We have updated the gameplay and mission flow from the Tutorial to the Atomic wasteland in the Desert. We updated existing mission, changed the order of other missions and created numerous new missions to tell a better story in Westside and the Desert.
The smallest improvements we made are easily seen in the Tutorial. With the addition of notification pop-ups the initial experience in the Tutorial is easier to navigate and the fundamentals of Champions Online are easier to learn. The Tutorial also has an improved ending from the fight with Black Talon to the hero's welcome that puts you right into the Renaissance Center where Defender needs your help.
Following the tutorial you jump into Westside and learn about a new threat. We have made so many improvements to the environment, mission flow and story in Westside it is almost a new neighborhood. The level range of Westside has been changed to levels 7-15. Players that have characters in the previous level range of 18-23 will have their missions cleared and a handoff to an appropriate contact in their level range.

Get over it already.
Cant create a character to play the game and Cryptic aint doing shit about it.
You're F2P, you don't get support.
But if you're more specific about your problem maybe someone can help.
Cant create a character...
how am i gonna get more specific than that???
You use an old account? I had the same problem..u can only have 2 character in one account(f2p) if u have more than 2 u cant create a new one
Dumb question I am sure, but were you previously a subscriber with more than two characters? As F2P you can only have 2 character slots and if they are taken up by gold characters that you can not play then what you say is true, you won't be able to log in with an old character and you will not be able to make a new one without deleting an old one.
Like others have said if you are using an old account with characters already past the lmit fo 2 you will ahve to remove old characters or convert them.
I also read that thre are 2 archtypes that are not greying out or whatever and if you choose 1 of those it will not let you create a char. I think its Beast and Specialist.

Yay. My lifetime sub paid off...oh well.
I would feel embarrassed to even mention if I had bought a lifetime subscription to any of the Cryptic games.... oh well I guess thats just me.
For all lifetimers, it's not that bad... Now Cryptic giving you 400 points every month to play their game, and you have access to everything (like a gold member). Not a bad deal if you ask me, it's like they're paying you to play.
Nobody ever held a gun to the head of a potential subscriber, forcing them to fork over hundreds of dollars of cash.
Seeing as one never knows what the future holds, lifetime subscriptions always seemed like a mistake to me.
OMG, 400 points per month is like they are paying you? Are you serious? So you paid roughly $300 for the box+lifetime and you feel that getting $4 worth of points that can only be spent on clothing is like being paid to play? You realize that you would have to play each month for 75 months just to break even.
If you put $300 in a money market account and accounting for inflation each year, you could pay yourself the $4 a month and spend it on anything you want. That sounds like a much better deal than a lifetime with Cryptic...
^ *bows* at his genius
The game is out since september 2009, so most lifetimers who spent the money at launch got a better deal than monthly subscribers at 15$ a month. It was about 239$ then, not sure where that 300$ come from...
All that I was saying was for all lifetimer that felt ripped off when the game went free to play. If you're not a lifetimer, I'm not even sure why you responded.
The old lifetime use to be like $200, bit more reasonable but god the new $300 is insane. Personally I think I'm gonna pass on this. I was really excited until today and I've been raging all day about it. As an old subscriber with 8 chars, I HAVE to convert and ruin a character instead of making a new one with the archetypes (was hoping to make new and keep the oldies for resub later). They've basically ruined this game for much of their old loyal fan base, this is nothing but a money grab for new players. DCUO is closing in on them and they know it.
I admit I'm ragey today and I'm mad right now. I use to be a big cryptic fan, but I feel betrayed by Cryptic to put systems in like this, I beta tested coh, STO, and this, and was often in the very early closed beta tests for coh issues and expansions too. I got into all these betas by reporting so many bugs to help improve the game, and in time I paid to play their games in total 4 years or more, so being forced into this has me a bit furious, seems a lot of others aren't too keen to the conversion process either. :
Having to convert old characters to Silver is horrible. At least Lotro let me keep any characters I had previously made exactly how they were before F2P.
And Lotro gives it's subbers and lifers 500 points a month not 400. Whats going on with Cryptic?
Future email: Cryptic announces that due to success of the Champions Free for All model, STO will following suite... Stay tuned for more info...
I am hoping that someone takes a look at some of the C-Store options. I was wondering specifically if buying the 1 inventory bag slot for 200 points applied to 1 character, all current characters or all current and future characters? That would be a good gauge as to their intent and pricing... I already think that not including more customization options a la carte is a terrible decision. The funny thing is, I think the prices they have right now are over what they should be foa a lot of thing, but right now everything is supposedly 20% off what it should be...

The point difference does not matter, because it is all relative to what you can actually buy from their store with those points. So the 400/500 is Apples to Oranges.
I am also disappointed that my old characters are simply locked and I am forced to delete them if I want to play on my old account (which still has over 1000 points on it).
But the solution is siply create a new account and play the free slots on that to see how the game changed. If you like it, resub to your old account.

Been dowloading update for the last 2 hours, what a waste if I lose my old characters, no point in returning even if f2p then since I am enjoying DCUO.
Yes I kind of feel they missed the boat with the "locked" accounts.
Gives returning people a bad taste in their mouth right off the start.
Just tried to play for free..... could not use exiting characters, could not convert characters, could not start new character, tried to delete character to open slot..... lost slot. I think I paid for that slot.....
I will not play
I paid almost $60 to purchase game, subbed for months, and I get the shaft.
Am I the only one who refuses to play F2P games?
Yep.
I am a lifetimer to CO. Play every day, and already made my money back. It was $199 19 months ago, LOL

You might have gotten your money's worth, but you haven't made your money back unless you've somehow sold your game time to someone else and got $199 out of it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
But how are you loyal if you stopped subscribing? If you want access to those characters, you need to pay the sub fee.
Otherwise, start a new account and use that one as the F2P and then pay for the other account if you think it is worth it.
