Originally posted by Puoltry Well the #'s are speaking for themselves.Id like to keep this poll going for a bit so im bumping the thread again. The reason behind giving 2 choices was to keep it as simple as possible.Ive found that most players either love it or hate it.Giving it a middle ground begins to make it overcomplicated.Sure there should be a reason for PvP i can get behind that for sure.Otherwise you may as well play UT 2004.Again i wanted a simple poll for a basic idea of what players want.
As a matter of fact let me quote myself.

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Yea I read them you said you found most people either liked it or hated it and making a grey area of how pvp should be done would just cause complications. But I never said anything about a grey area or liking it or hating it I said pvp is necessary in all mmorpg's.
People hate it because of the immature brats who go around joy killing because they think they are strong. People love it because they are one of those immature brats who go around killing because they think they are strong.
I can easily make anyone hate pvp or love pvp by just affecting the way they play. The people who love it I will glady make the highest lvl char on their game and just kill them over and over and over till they say they hate pvp. The people who say they hate it I can just annoy them forever on their non pvp world stealing their kills, loot, items, friends, just being an all around ass to them to make them want to kill me.
The only reason restrictions are placed in killing in mmorpg's because too many people abuse the thought of it not affecting anyone else. Think of the restrictions as a conscience or a higher law, you don't go around killing people or punching everyone and anyone's lights out at school either because you have a conscience or you're afraid to get into trouble.
Meh, I'm babbling, and your pvp theories has touched a sensitive spot in me.
pvp, crafting etc is the only thing what makes a game interesting, killing ai mobs isnt that interesting for me but unfortunately you have to level up in lots of mmorpgs, at least some have nice quest what makes the leveling grind more a pleasure but pvp only when someone allows is boring for me
Well I know PVP can have it's place but just open killing people for no reason for the fun of it is rather pointless. It also makes playing the game rather annoying when you are fighting/Leveling. I still think Guilds and wars between them is a rather good way to have a PVP system in these types of games then if you would rather not fight other players stay out of the guilds. Just my opinion.
Well I'm going to give you the run down on PvP and what plagues it.
Each MMORPG game has different game mechanics to PvP all relating to the game engine that was developed. There are main issues when dealing with PvP which is broken down to these categories, 1. Cheaters, 2. Exploiters and 3. Latency. Yes there is a difference in cheaters from exploiters which I will educate you on.
1. Cheaters - Players who use scripting programs to automate functions of the game to gain the advantage. Also hack programs to give the player an advantage, one example is: Speed hacks-(can cause severe latency to the opponent and speeds the movements of the player up who is using the hack considerably. Thus imagining the outcome is pretty simplistic.
2. Exploiters - These are players that use broken game code to their advantage, i.e. bugs. This can range from terrain manipulation, i.e. attacking through obstacles but cannot be attacked for example. Not really a cheater just using a bug or bugs to their advantage. It has been my experience ever since online gaming started that scripters are also exploiters vice versa. Not always the case though as any players do not want their account banned for using scripting programs they will stick to exploits.
3. Latency - This is what you are familiar with being called lag. One type of connection for one player is totally different for another player. Example would be this player over here is running on a T3 connection vs. the other person running on a ADSL line, completely different as the T3 is a much faster and reliable connection. Also the type of computers used is one of the biggest reasons for latency. You could be running a PC that is not quite up to current game standards with a very fast connection but you are still gonna experience latency. Vice versa, a person with an ultimate gaming rig that has a slow connection will have latency.
Each online game is completely different naturally, let me give a few examples.
1. Ultima Online - One of the most exploited games ever forget PvP if you do not use scripts, you simply won't survive. You might get lucky and encounter just players new to PvP but the very successful PvPers are not all what you think they are no matter what they are telling you. Best bet, trust no one in what they say or simply at all.
2. Everquest - Another exploited game either via scripts or through bugs
3. Star Wars Galaxies - I was quite a successful PvPer when it was first released but this was more based on game combat unbalance. Nonetheless this was one title where PvPing was a blast. Couldn't tell you anything about the current build as I do not play it anymore. Back then there were no scripting or hack programs out yet.
Those are a few examples, I've beta tested most online games but either PvP was not implemented yet or I didn't test long enough to get to PvP.
Some online games do make it tough for players to manipulate a PvP outcome through exploits to cheats as other games make it readily easy. As long as MMORPG's exist so will cheaters, exploiters and latency, FACT!

i dont PvP unless i am.. umm.. pushed to do so. but I would NEVER play a game that doesnt have PvP
Just for your information ive started a 2nd poll based on 10 choices.Go take a look and vote there also.Seems as if the majority is for PvP.
