Don't pick up Champions Online immediately after a major patch like this. The major patches always break various things and make the game awkward to play. If you want to pick up the game, then wait until the next patch after a major patch comes, and fixes most of what the major patch broke.
In this case, a bunch of the UI is messed up. That should be easy to fix, I'd think. The Dr. Destroyer's Robot Factory lair is broken and uncompletable. There are probably lots of random other things that are broken that I'm not aware of at the moment.

Apparently the problem with being unable to complete character creation is caused by eight archetypes being available free to silver characters, and the other two having to be purchased. But for people who haven't purchased them, it still shows them as an option, but only gives you a cryptic error message when you try to create a character. Being unable to create the character isn't a bug in itself; it's just horrible messaging as to leave players with no clue why it shouldn't be able to create the character.
As an old subscriber with 8 chars, I HAVE to convert and ruin a character instead of making a new one with the archetypes (was hoping to make new and keep the oldies for resub later). They've basically ruined this game for much of their old loyal fan base
But how are you loyal if you stopped subscribing? If you want access to those characters, you need to pay the sub fee.
Otherwise, start a new account and use that one as the F2P and then pay for the other account if you think it is worth it.
So much whining and bi***ing. It's now F2P because the few sub's they had weren't bringing in enough money. Making f2p will attract more idiot kids that will use daddy's credit card to buy cool looking gear. Welcome to the reality of mmorpg's not many can get the sub base to stay afloat...
i expected the gold and silver character have their own slot but i guess they don't want that to happen, they should at least said something about combining gold and silver characters. now that this happen i got alot of time to check out rift beta 5... it would be annoying if you paid lifetime sub then later on the price drop.
The only people who would be whining about not having access to those characters are the ones that made them while they were subbing. Which means, you still have access to those characters, you just continue subbing.
As nice as it would be for them to simply lock out your old characters and let you make two more, should you decide to sub later on, you now have an extra two characters lots you didn't before, that you didn't pay for. So really, how else are they supposed to go about this? Also, your first 6 characters do not count against the lockout to make more. That's what they stated in the forums, so if you have 6 or less and you can't make more, ask for GM help in the forums. That shouldn't be happening to you.
For everyone else, when you play a p2p game, and you stop subbing, you don't get to play those characters anymore. Just because Champs is now technically f2p, doesn't mean they stopped being a business. If you still want to play those characters, still continue subbing, just like you were doing before the conversion to f2p. If you don't and would rather play for free, then you get what you pay for, which is less. It may sound a bit harsh, but such is life.

The game is beautiful.I play it with everything cranked to the max including aa and af,vsync is off.
I found also that is more deep than dcuo(at least for now).
The only thing that attracts me to dcuo is that is the dc universe and the heroes that im familiar with from my childhood.Other than that the game needs tons of content and character skill depth.
So the only problem with co was that there were not enough people to play this game. Now the problem is solved becoming free to play and the game is awesome for free!Probably the best ftp game out there!
Well done cryptic keep it up and show us some real neverwinter in the near futrure and dont ruin the franchize pls.
I'm impressed to be honest, unlike Turbine with DDO & LOTRO they didn't just carve up the game and add in a shop. They've actually revamped a fair bit of content, added cutscenes and polished the whole experience.
It is still Champions though, so if you didn't like it before you probably won't like it now, but its far from being the mess that it used to be.
I'm happy this game has gone to a free to play model. It'll bring in more players in the Superhero MMO genre who will buy a Subscription or DCUO or whatever. I plan to give this a try, buying WoW sub again soon, this will tide me over.
still seems clunky to me especially after playing DCUO
Yeah, I figured I'd give it a go while DCUO was doing maint. When I initially played CO I thought it was worth the buy but not the sub, after playing DCUO I can't really fathom why I ever played CO to begin with lol. CO came closer than many MMO's to a decent combat experience but fell extremely short, DCUO just highlights how short.
After reading the limitation of free-gameplay (http://www.champions-online.com/f2p_matrix) I decided not to bother with this title. F2Players cannot even create a fully customized toon, they just have to use the templates...
I would rather pay for DCUO then play Champions for free.
Couldn't agree more!
DCUO is smooth and polished (it has a few oddities, but I am sure they will get ironed out) with plenty of content from what I can tell. I wanted to play champs if it was free only to revisit my favorite characters, but I don't think I want to pay for a lesser game. Champs boasts about new content, but it's all rubbish imo.
Cryptic... too little, too late, and not good enough to save your superhero/occult mmo.
OMG, 400 points per month is like they are paying you? Are you serious? So you paid roughly $300 for the box+lifetime and you feel that getting $4 worth of points that can only be spent on clothing is like being paid to play? You realize that you would have to play each month for 75 months just to break even.
If you put $300 in a money market account and accounting for inflation each year, you could pay yourself the $4 a month and spend it on anything you want. That sounds like a much better deal than a lifetime with Cryptic...
The game is out since september 2009, so most lifetimers who spent the money at launch got a better deal than monthly subscribers at 15$ a month. It was about 239$ then, not sure where that 300$ come from...
All that I was saying was for all lifetimer that felt ripped off when the game went free to play. If you're not a lifetimer, I'm not even sure why you responded.
The $300 comes from the $239 lifetime plus $50 for the original game plus tax = more or less $300
I do not think anything will let me come back. I admit, I have enjoyed a lot once playing CO, have spent a lot of time designing my champions, .... etc. But I do not think being free will change anything for what I left, I think everything will become even worse.
1. worst of the worst of the worst support ever. In any game. 3 weeks of waiting for any answer for petition to receive later dumb automatic response that had absolutely nothing to do with petition.
2. lack of different areas
3. lack of different abilitis, spells. If one want to be i.e. electricity ... at i.e. lv. 20 he run out of this kind od spells; must use others, that do not make sense. At the end you have fire mages, electroman, .... that all have orbital cannon.
STO and CO are about the only games that DO NOT overheat my faulty ATI Radeon GPU (my CPU has watercooling so I am not sure about that).
They (and also LotRO, to some extent) both have a "Troubleshooting" section under their Video tab (you have to click it for it to unroll) where you can limit the framerate and various aspects of the GPU load the game puts on your machine.
Playing in Half Resolution is also an option. I have an old 1280x1024 monitor but my eyes are even older, so playing in half res in that resolution still looks OK to me - which in turn is a great help for my GPU.
I also play them with 1.25 UI scale.
These UI/Video options are partly why I like Cryptic games (sue me).

Listening to the younger crowd, still better than someone who complains too much that there is too much complaining.....
A game is just that... a game, not an emotional crutch.

Could I use my old beta character when this game first came out ?

i am as usual perplexed how so many people can complain about the the "problems" with their old accounts when it was clear as day what would happen.
Still... Free or not i am not touching this with a 5 foot pole.
This have been a good conversation

You do realise your lifeitme sub hasnt changed AT ALL right?
Or are you just completely clueless as to what champions ftp is?
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
I was in beta and didn't pick it up cuz, well it was ugly and buggy.
Aside from the poor 'archtypes' they've stuck everyone in- It's actually playing way more decent than I thought it would.
But I got tired of it after about 2 hours.
Overheats my CPU just like STO does

As someone who BOUGHT THE GAME. I think I should at least get the 2 extra archetypes or SOMETHING...
I won't be coming back.
