I want to be behind indie developers in the mmo market.  I do...  But with the current crop of crap that's come from said developers, I feel as if I'm tossing money into a money pit.  I think of the cash I wasted on mortal online, darkfall, perpetuum online... the list goes on.

I'm certain I'm not alone in this thought process.  The mmo market has become a flood of gargage based games with so many hopes and dreams but no solid and actual playability.  Stop handing out excuses for the developers and start looking at what's actually there.

I'm going to file this game under the "check back in a month or two" category.

The game needs open beta, really...really? It is only you who needs the open beta here...

I know you can always just buy the game and play it. If for some reason it is not to your liking then just quit playing it and move onto something else. Seem's to work for 99% of us.

Can one of you fanbois posting about how "all the lag and server issues are the result of running the game on some beta server" please post a definative source?

Here is a bit of info for you about how the game industry works...  The servers to host this software have already been purchased and the software is loaded.  There is one distribution point that feeds the server farm the updates and each server maintains its own player database separate from the actual game files.  Standard industry practice is to open one REAL game server up for beta and then open the rest on launchday.  Sometimes the player information is wiped from the beta server after launch and that server becomes the test server, other times it gets a new shard name and goes live with the others.  This ensures the game is being tested under ACTUAL conditions and allows the developer to make acurate decisions about game performance.  Are there test servers, yes but they are used to test small pieces or new code.  There is always an actual TEST environment which is run on the same equipment as the live game to ensure what works in test will work in live.

And understandably this is not for everyone. But that does not mean the devs should give open betas. Considering that in the eyes of most its a freet trial. For folks to then go and over hype slag it off on the forums.
Dont be so impatient, let the game release then read what people are saying about, and then decide.

Its more I wanna try the game to see if *I* like it without having to blow 50 bucks on a risk that might end up being a waste of money. People can say what they want about the game but really only opinion that matters is my own, and I cannot form my own opinion unless I try it. In mmorpg's if I don't get into beta testing I usually never pick the game up, even after a free trial becomes available. By then I have moved on to other games. a Open beta before release fixes this and might guarntee the company a new player/subscriber.

As someone said in this thread the fact the devs of earthrise are being so hush hush has me worried about the state of the game an dhow long its going to last, there should be MUCH more info out with the game so close to release than there is now. Which to me is a sign they trying to hide something.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

    I posted the reason there -> http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/331/view/forums/thread/304754/Regarding-serverperformance-and-why-they-havent-swapped-servers-yet.html

GNi got bought by another company and Masthead had to search for a new host.

the 'this is not the release servers' is total BS.

Seen it before in several games, they always say the game is lagging or w/e cos its a beta. This is not true, dont get fooled by it.

If a game is lagging, if a game is buggy as hell, if a game is crap this close to release, its cos the game will be like that for a while, even after release.

Think a bit.. dont get fooled easly and watch the signs.. the signs there.

Aion, AoC, AC, AO, DDO, Eve, Eq2, GW, MW3, L1&2, RF, RIFT, SWG, SWTOR, TR, UO, WOW, WAR

The original server host provider apparently went under and got acquired by some other company, so they are in the process of limbo while getting the new services up and running..

There's even a post by a dev about it in this forum, the "regarding the server performance" thread.

The current servers are obviously not production servers, and they probably don't even have a commercial grade bandwidth pipe on them, based on the latency behavior people have been reporting in game - /trace to see your ping stats )

As for the "open beta" - thousands of people got keys, the NDA was lifted.. that's pretty open to me :D

I dont really understand this, you say the beta server is NOT the real server or anything like it and you use the link above as a source but the link above clearly says that they have a new host and it is the best in the MMO industry.  I understand they had a deal with GNi and that didnt work out but they found a new host.  Are you saying they are not using this new host and are still searching?

It's pretty standard for software companies  to offer Free Trials or Test Drives (at least for service based offerings as opposed to boxed software) to consumers before they make a purchase decision. Open Beta's are pretty much the Launch Period version of that.

I'd definately be willing to give Earthrise a try...it looks very interesting....but I won't purchase an MMO... ANY MMO... sight unseen. As a consumer, if a company wants my business....they'll offer me an opportunity to try thier product before I plunk down $50 on that. If they aren't willing to do that, then they obviously don't want my business bad enough.

If they want my money for launch...they'll offer an Open Beta. If they want my money 6-12 months after a Free Launch then they'll offer a Free Trial then.

If they NEVER want my money...then they will never offer a risk free trial of thier product.

A company is free to do whatever they like..... but not offering consumers an opportunity to try your product is a horrible marketing strategy...unless you have zero confidence that consumers will actualy find value in your product once they try it.
