If someone else had told me this story, I would've flamed them. If I wasn't aggravated and sleep deprived - none of this would be an issue, but my latest experience with Rift has turned me from a fun loving fan to a bitter troll. The rest of what you're about to read will be nothing more than the ramblings of a selfish whiny player heedless to reason.
To start off, most players will love the new smell of Rift. The novelty of a new mmo, familiar yet virgin... a new beginning for a lot of us that have been around the block. It is surprisingly well polished to be in beta and I suspect the latest beta is mainly a stress test. The key feature of Rift that really pulled me in was the diverse combination of classes or souls, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this!
I rolled a mage. I haven't liked the direction most MMOs have taken mages lately but I love the class ideology - glass canon launching bolts of devastation on all who approach. I have never seen them as a pet class and I have an intense desire not to use a pet. Pets are okay with some classes (refer to list);
Necromancers - yeah, they can have pets
Hunter/Rangers - sure, give them an animal
Beastmaster - awesome idea love it!
Mage - HELL NO!
I don't mind the mechanics of pets, they do great at turning every encounter into a simplistic tank and spank. I'm sure a lot of people love pets (hell WoW gave everyone one) but they cheapen the content for me. I do like what SWTOR is doing with companions/pets, that would perhaps cure me of my disdain for the mindless stalkers always in my way.
So everything is going smoothly for my pyromage. I was laughing at all those elemental summoners as I burned down most foes before they could get to me... until about level 15. Suddenly my survivability dropped, I wasn't even a cannon anymore but just glass. Most encounters I was barely making it out 1v1 and if another mob got involved I was as good as dead.
My first reaction was, I'm doing it wrong. So I did my research and started picking up the other mage souls. I made it my personal duty to find a good mage build that did not depend on pets. For two days I continuously reset and adjusted my talents, paying attention to every detail. I tried every soul (even the pet ones) to see how I could make the solo mage work - all the while keeping a notepad full of bugs, concerns and comments like any good beta tester.
I should have taken a break, I was growing tired and angry at some of my results. Most specs I was trying wasn't working, some was sufficient but too spammy, others lacked the playstyle I was wanting to achieve. *Best result I had was with Stormcaller/Warlock/Chloro although cloudburst needs a cooldown.
On top of that I also leveled Outfitting, Runecrafter and butchering. I finally hit 20 and here is where the selfish little brat rears his ugly head... I had no money for a mount! I wasn't even close. I watched as all my lvl 20 peers rode past me and laughed.
I've always loved those cool GMs in games, the ones that go above and beyond their duty to keep players happy. I figured it was a beta, why not sent ask a GM for a mount. I've been testing the game and taking it seriously. I had a full notepad full of notes for the Mage calling, I put in the time and work. It's a beta and we all would start from scratch at release.
The response I got was, "It's not in our policy to just GIVE players free items" - GM.
I LOL'd at first, it's just a beta! I'm not taking it home with me, it has no value, it's just a way to get to point A from point B. Maybe they hadn't used the "Higher Authority" excuse and just talked to me. It felt as if I was being punished for extensively testing out the game. So I tried another approach - I told them that if they send me the money for a mount, I would minimize the game and preorder right now.
This wasn't about a mount anymore, it was about how bad did they want my business and how would they deal with the selfish whiny customer. Representatives are important to the business, they are the ones addressing our concerns. How sympathetic would they be to my predicament and how able were they to help players in need.
Yet the same response with the word money added in, "It's not in our policy to just GIVE players free items and money" - GM.
I logged out right where I stood, opened control panel and said goodbye to Rift forever. It could have been a beautiful relationship but now I'm old enough to know when things won't work out. It's just not in my policy to deal with insignificant policies.

I think I'll just take the post as you indicated in the first few paragraphs.

Wait... what?
You spent all your money on respeccing and couldn't afford a mount so you asked a dev to give you one and when they didnt you threw a fit and hate the game?
Am I missing something here?
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Pretty much.
You were right about the whiny bit.
This thread makes me sad. I won't type anything else, for I may be reprimanded. =(
The point of a beta is to play it and point out any problems with the game. You should have just let them know that at lvl 20 after playing the game seriously you couldn't afford a mount and the currency needs to be looked at.
But you do seem kind of 'whinny' thinking if everyone else can ride you should to. Apparently they could afford a mount.
And offering to preorder the game if the give you a mount....pathetic....i wouldn't have even told that.
I love it. Fanatstic GM. I hate the mentality of games catering to everyone who wants everything free. It takes 5-8 hours to level 1-20. In that time you should end up with 4-5 plat. More thaan enough to buy a mount. If you have wasted the money you can earn the money needed in an hour. 10 minutes if you know where to look for some hidden treasure spots that reward 1-1.5 plat each.
Sadly by the time you hit 20 you will have enough money to afford two mounts and several respecs.

Fair enough, you're tired, you've had a bad day, you feel like you wasted your time and money trying to find a respec that suits you, it didn't happen and the dev didn't give you what you want, I think it's fine to post a rant about it but unless the idea of not finding anything fun without a pet killed it for you why did you uninstall?
Anyway, sorry you had a bad day hope you feel better about it later
I did sent positive feedback on this, stating that during beta they should reduce the cost of resets and training. If I had not reset so many times, none of this would be an issue.
Pathetic or not, it was a simple thing he could've done to earn his company 1 customer. Maybe it's because I work for a living but I respect people who value that 1 customer. The mount had no value and the fact they could not just give me one is about as pathetic as me asking for one... this is just a beta. The object is to test the game and I was punished for doing my job.
maybe he should have been allowed to ride his pet. hey thats an idea..your mount is your pet to help grind..
As a point of note, in one of the betas I did so many rifts/invasions/large area events that i used all my money for soul healing.
I believe I submitted a note that soul healing might be very expensive if Rifts happen as often as they do and then I logged out.
I think you are just tired.

It is only a beta, stop taking yourself so serious.
Your really that upset about the GM not giving you a mount cuz you spent all your money. But I do agree with you on the Mage class part hard to make it work without a pet class.
I hear ya man. I can understand how you could be fed up after all that testing, but just take a break and come back later. It's a nice game
I think I know what might have happened: The GM was sitting there watching general chat and getting a liitle ticked at all the trolls saying that WoW was better than Rift and then he got your message, and rolling his eyes and thinking that you were some wow-tard begging for gold, he sent you the response he did...

Does that mean they should give it to everyone?
This is what my Grandmother said to me once "If I give to you I have to give you your brother, I only have one so I won't give it to anyone".

You haven't played many betas have you? Most of the ones I'm in, I get away with stuff like that all the time. Also usually end up having a cool conversation with a person and not a policy.
Thank you.
In most betas you get stuff like that to help you test the game. This is more like a stress, pacing test so giving everyone wouldn't be justified.
How many cookies did your grandmother give your brother and you not know?
I don't think there's a problem asking for the mount but naive to expect it. You're looking at it wrong though. You should have taken the stance that a lot players are wasting their cash on a mount while you're going to have refined your build for release.

This seems like advice that would be good all 'round.
It's a beta, the end of a beta what would it have mattered?

For some reason I read this entire post as a way to get people to flame you, so you could retort with a smug "heh yup" answer. That being said, since you don't want me to, I won't take you seriously on this part.
Digging a little deeper, you bring up a valid point, though. It seems that most classes in the game need to have a pet class to be viable in PVE soloing, and you are almost hindering yourself by not doing so. Did you also find the same thing?

Not at all. Even after 20, when the cleric's power starts to balance out with the other players, being without a pet is not a hindrance. I found Assassin/Ranger to be a total hindrance and completely rerolled.
