I am somewhat religious, and I try to be helpful, kind, patient, and friendly in real life. I dislike conflict IRL, so I tend to stick to PvE in game as well.
In games, I usually play evil or ugly races/classes. I love dark elves, trolls, orcs, and so on. Evil knights? Necromancers? Right up my alley. Sometimes I engage in light roleplay in line with the lore. Sometimes I engage in mild mischief (or light griefing, depending on how you look at it). Sometimes I make jokes at the expense of the paladins, the druids, the rangers, the 'good' elves, and so on. I don't want to get too introspective about why I choose to play characters that are, by their nature, the opposite of what I strive to be in real life.
I generally end up being mostly friendly and helpful in games, regardless of what type of character I am playing, though. It's still me at the keyboard, after all.
My recent beta exposure to Rift has me on the Defiant side. You might think that I'd take the religion side in what seems to be a religion vs. science (or technology) conflict, but I love technology and science, I like the 'heroes from the future' story better than the 'heroes from the past' story, and I am rather uncomfortable with calling people 'heretics', so Defiant it is. That's probably a case where my real life beliefs are influencing my choice, even if it isn't in the obvious way. (It doesn't hurt that the Bahmi are my favorite race, but that's irrelevant to the question at hand.)
When I used to play WOW most of the people I meet who play Paladin are kind of mean people. And lot of bad guy characters are nice people. It is kind of funny.
Yes... and no. While I may be a Christian, if I'm playing CoD, I'm not exactly going to run around and try and hug people, I prefer the knife. In mmo's I'm much the same way. I usually play the game the way the game sets it up. If it's one side verses the other I will kill the opposite faction, that's what one does while at war.
However/but, when I notice some dude/dudette just out questing and/or minding thier own business and getting some exp. I don't jump in and kill them. That's just not right. I don't steal nodes of ore or quest mobs or gank lowbies. I don't camp people, but I will usualy kill them if they are killing one of my own faction. I help out my own team. I will kill someone who is a known jerk/ganker, but still won't camp them. I sometimes even help the opposite faction kill mobs if they are being overwhelmed. I do have a mild code of honour I play by even on a pvp server where it's free for all.
In the end, it's still a game so I don't do things to others that would drive me to put a keyboard through a moniter because that's how I'd like to be treated as well.
Hmmm, interesting question. I would say to a certain extent. For example, I don't like to scam ppl, I don't like to be rude in chat, I don't like to grief ppl (unless the deserve it). However, I don't let my RL morals interfere with my enjoyment of PvP and killing other factions, players, etc.... Then looting there dead bodies for everything they are worth.
I play games like God does: show mercy, generosity, forgiveness... then smite anyone who doesnt respect you for it.
Basically, if i see someone who needs help, I offer it. I often give away items or loot freely, I will quickly forgive a mistake in a dungeon, I dont go out hunting people to kill, yet if someone uses that against me they are cursed if I can do it (not always in PvP style, I have special alts I use for righteous justice (just like God uses Babylonians... haha)
well i guess for starters, i always kindasorta RP a bit on all my characters though i would not say i'm a real RPer.
in Wow I was always the light hearted comic relief. I can see myself in real life and i thought it was good for my troll rogue to keep things loosy goosy in the stressy (sometimes) raids.
in EQ1 i was always helpful and the guy in the group of 6 that everyone would /befriend as the group broke up. Always dished oput buffs for free, or for the cost of the mats.
in EvE i named my character after an anarchist (Chomskian that's me) and i never really did any super buysell projects, that many players do to gain money. I got my money by selling loot and getting bounties, and doing mining and pvp ops, and anoms. I got the idea because i noticed so many ayn rand based corps in eve and decided it needed a super anti-capitalist.
I guess overall each toon has a little kernel of the "real itch" in the way i played them. maybe even charicatured versions, because i'm certainly not always a comic (i am sometimes), I am sometimes shy (though i do love making friends, especially those who have a hobby in common) and im no anarchist (though i'm certainly on the left side philosophically, i consider myself pretty moderate).
I have the station access thingy now (because i play EQ2, i have played POTBS in the past and might wanna dabble, and i want to play the eq1 progress server when it happens,) so i figured i'd use a steam giftcard and get DCUO. I imagine i'll play a goodie but DC is the kind of IP where there is a certain silliness to many bad guys, so maybe i will go there.
I never EVER grief because i'm not that kind of person in RL and i am pretty sure there are some folks in eve who, if i met them in RL, i'd kick them down some stairs.
well i dont know if this was an answer to the OP, or whether it was just some self administered psychoanalysis. either way thanks for reading.

I found this question more relevent to such games as Mass Effect 1/2, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Fable III, and Dragon Age.
I've always hated the achievements/trophies that required you to play either GOOD or EVIL (But mainly evil), especially in games such as Fable III where your stats are permanent regardless if you reload a game saved but not save its progress.
I think the way you treat others in online games determins if you're really regarded as good or evil, lol.
Not even remotely. For instance, just picked up DCUO...and despite my long-standing Batman crush, playing as Lex Luthor's lacky is just plain more fun. Infect unsuspecting university students with mutagen? Check. Pose as doctors to do so? Check. Feed 'em to Parasite? Doublecheck.
In real life I would be horrified by the thought of deliberately infecting a population with something harmful. Flies directly in the face of my morality. But in a game? It's a riot.

I think there is a difference between you assuming a role in a game and actively screwing someone over. I would easily do everything you are doing but I wouldn't harrass someone in game if it seemed like I was "going too far".
It's ok to play the bad buy. In my opinion it's not ok to be a bad guy.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, I'm not really a griefer; though I do operate as an Id. If it's red, I go after it -- I don't really look at levels. It's entirely possible I tag people more than once, but it's not on purpose (unless they come back after me, of course).
One quest sticks out in WoW which I refused and was almost disgusted with the objective. It was one of the Kirin Tor quests in Borean Tundra which involved torturing a captured mage hunter from the blue dragonflight. What bothered me especially was the questgivers line which was something along the lines of "the Kirin Tor forbids this practice, so you do it for me".
Hhahaaha omg, I sooo remember that one..I was like wtf...I still did it realizing it's just a game, but this quest is soo wrong on so many lvls lol.
coming from a person who has trouble killing in-game "mamooth cubs and their mothers"- RoM ..lol

I don't think I'd massacre a field full of animals to collect just their teeth or hooves or horns or hearts for a few copper pieces in real life.
I remember playing SWG in the old days and thinking that the Jedi would never of allowed my toon to join them if they knew what it did to get there.
Edit: Morals aside, I find I spend money like a drunken sailor ingame, but in real life, I'm extremely frugal.
