Combat Clarifications.....

driver4hiredriver4hire Member UncommonPosts: 78

Allrighty.. Firstly... I just watch this video

It shows some pvp combat.   I could not get the sound too work for some reason so I do not know if their was dialogue.  Soo I'm asking to be merciful if he explains it and I just couldn't hear it. (sound card = not working in my netbook)

So As far as the combat goes,  Do you aim the crosshair manually and you need to aim properly, (it must stay on the target) to shoot and cause damage? or do you just lock on once and blast away?   The former I would compare more to a darkfall type of targeting system, the latter would be SWG NGE style.  I personally hate the NGE style its so stupid.  I am praying that their is at least some skill involved with the aiming system.

Second question would be about switching weapons,  Can you just run towards your target with an assault rifle and then just whip out a flamethrower and roast? or is there some kind of delay in the weapon changing?

Do you reload?

As far as special abilities go,  I see the action bar, do you ready a move queue it up and it happens or are they active abilities, like "Charged Shot- Charge your weapon and shoot at target causing an extra 25% dmg.  5 sec CD"

Thanks in advance to anyone who answer politely

There is no target lock, you aim manually. It is more skill based than an auto-lock game. The combat feels clunky, especially compared to a traditional FPS game or Darkfall, but that's something they should be able to smooth out in future patches. So yes, there will be some skill involved.

Unfortunately, you can switch weapons at any time. There's next to no delay (two to three seconds), so this game is probably going to turn into a jack-of-all-trades show. Shooting someone that is far away? No problem! Switch to your precision rifle. Shooting someone that is close? No problem! Switch to your flamethrower.

No, you don't reload. There is unlimited ammo.

In the current beta build not a lot of people are using abilites all that much because we have very low power supplies (each ability takes a set amount of power to perform). This is something that will very likely be changed when the game launches, so I don't have much to comment on, but yes, there are abilites like the "Charged Shot" you mentioned above. Buffing, debuffing, CC abilities, direct damage dealing attacks, AoEs, and healing abilities are all in.

Also, to be fair to the game, the pvp combat could turn into something much more enjoyable when builds come into play. As it is now, it's a bit vanilla. What I mean is this: Much like Guild Wars, you can only have 8 main abilities equiped on your hotbar at once. So you could potentially have two people playing with an assault rifle, but their builds could be completely different. Maybe one of them is mostly specced for healing, while the other is mostly specced for AoE damage. This will also limit the jack-of-all-trades combat that I described above because chances are, you'll want to choose abilities for just one weapon type, making you highly proficient with that weapon.

The slightly scarey thing about the game is that none of the mid to higher level game play has been tested to any great degree - at least not by beta testers, and virtually no large scale combat has been tested. Heck, I don't think anyone has even had enough people to do a 5vs5 yet. Actually, small scale pvp (outside of 1vs1 or 2vs2) hasn't really been tested either.

So, I guess it could go either way. Mid to high end pvp or "end game" pvp could be a lot of fun, or it could be less than stellar. No one has tested it yet, and only time will tell which is the case.

Sounds cool I loved guildwars's pvp systems. Hopefully the cost of insuring too many weapons will prevent people frum running around w/ 5 different types.

Is friendly fire possible like in Darkfall or is it impossible to accidentally hit your teammates?

By deafault their is no friendly fire. However if you hold down CTRL you can damage anyone. So  you get to choose if you want to hurt allies or not.

Yeah insurace currently doesn't cost too much, but as Driver mentioned no one will be using 5 guns you need  to have skills for the weapon to be fully efective (hopefully, no ones been able to test this) and you can only equip 8 skills.

In most cases I'd speculate people will probably have a long range and a close range weapon. Its just really hard to say since no one has been able to do any end game PvP, almost none even has any skills or abilites yet.

most important question stands: will there be open beta or as many beta keys as the public demands?

I highly doubt it, but I suppose it's possible.

Open betas are usually done to draw potential buyers to a game. As a game company, if you think that having an open beta will draw people to purchase your game, you have one. If you think that there's a possibilty that an open beta will discourage people from purchasing your game, you forgo it.

I can confidently say im 99% sure thier won't be an open beta. As for the state of the beta keys I'm not sure either. If I had to guess I'd say it would be a limited amount, maybe a couple thousand, but thats pure speculation.

As for when the keys come out i think they're waiting for the new update to the client to be out before they let a bunch of people in. Currently the servers are down for an update but we don't know if thats going to be the big update we've been waiting for or not. Again everything its a guessing game at this point but I'd bet the keys will come out either later tonight or tomorrow.

The game launches in 6 1/2 days.

I highly doubt there will be an open beta, especially when sites with closed beta keys (that don't have permission yet to release those keys, thanks to Masthead dropping the ball and having one of the worst community managers in the history of the genre) are not anticipating being able to release the keys until the 2nd or 3rd of Feb.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

    OP = negative nancy!

heh your make very valid points and I honestly don't expect an open beta or for the launch to go smoothly lol (I might even wait a few months to even buy it)  but it still looks like it could be a great game.

    Best Wishes!

I don't think the community manager has anything to do with when MMORPG.com can release the keys. And if they key's aren't out by the 2nd or 3rd of Feb they aren't gonna come out since the game is released the 4th.

My personal prediction is they'll be out tomorrow, but no one really knows.

Indeed, the community manager does not handle distribution.

However, he is responsible for informing the community about when certain sites will have keys made available, and isn't even able to accomplish that simple goal in any type of efficient or accurate form.

Predict away, GameOgre has already confirmed that they don't expect to be able to release keys until the dates I listed. Which makes this entire, absurd tirade one big exercise in futility.

  • RaxeonRaxeon Member UncommonPosts: 2,288

maybe they will delay a week. but honestly the current server couldnt handle a shit ton of people so im guessing when ever the switch over tot he new server whitch could be what there doing witht he patch too not sure yet

  • BaihuigauBaihuigau Member Posts: 80

The reason they havent released the keys is two fold, one they have been finishing the new patch being released, and two the current servers cant handle the influx of players, im pretty sure the reason the servers are down is their switching to the retail cluster so that they can release the keys to handle all the new testers, the second reason is the company they had hosting

their retail cluster got bought out by a biger company and are no longer hosting servers for anyone, so they have had literally only a couple of days to find a new company and get a cluster going, hence a biger delay to release the new upcoming patch since im sure they want to deploy it on the retail cluster since eventually we have to stress test that beast before retail starts lol.
