Good BETA or Bad BETA

marz.at.playmarz.at.play Member UncommonPosts: 912

How was your overall experience with this BETA? Is Trion on the right track to perfecting this game for launch? I had issues with FPS at times, and felt like the Rifts were too frequent getting in the way of questing at times. Gameplay all around was sound. I submitted a number of tickets and am very curious to see what changes the next BETA brings around.

This game was not even on my radar until I got into beta 4-5 so I would say for me it was a success.

I think it was a successful BETA, and am quite surprised how polished the game is in a BETA stage. For all the haters, I recommend getting past level 5 to really immerse yourself in the game before passing judgement. But as a BETA goes, it was hands down successful.

I feel like some FPS issues could be addressed, but overall the stability of the client was pretty sound. I mean, even in WoW (a 6 year old developed game with pre-historic graphics) they do have FPS issues and slowdowns in a FEW cases. Rift performs flawlessly compared to other betas of its kind though. The game itself is in better condition than I have seen a beta in years to tell you the truth.

The few major concerns I have for the game would be balance, end game content, and rift frequency. Rifts in the first zone seemed to spawn far too often sometimes and barely at all at others. It might have something to do with the number of people in the zone, but some things need to be tweaked as far as the frequency. The rift frequency is not a deal-breaker, but I could see it becoming an issue at higher levels if there are too many or too few.

There seemed to be a few abilities and/or souls that had some balance concerns of being under/overpowered, but balance is the last thing on my list as far as launch titles are concerned. Balance is ongoing and is just a matter of tweaking numbers; there are far more pressing issues a launching MMORPG’s developer should be concerned with.

As far as the end game, the concern I have is that we don’t know much. We know there will be raids, dungeons that you can go back and do at a higher difficulty level as well as high level dungeons, rifts, world pvp depending on server type, and battlegrounds. All of those things are great, but the main concern is how rewarding each type of avenue will be, and how the replay ability of it all meshes together. The Rift system could be used in some really interesting ways or become a silly repetitive and somewhat tedious task to deal with.

With all that said though, I absolutely love the game. Sure there are some negative aspects, but most modern MMORPGs do have less content at launch then this will have. Some of the simplest aspects of the game that aren’t broken come to mind when it comes to the polished state of beta. You can queue for battlegrounds in a group, as well as remain in that group. You can share quests worldwide, the UI is fairly intuitive and features many things even the most developed UIs do not have…including AOE looting. If I had to list all the little things I love about how Rift has perfected at such an early point in the game it would sound more like a grocery list so I won’t bore you more details.

The game is a WoW clone to the point of absolute ridiculousness, but that is one of the great parts about it. This is the game that, hopefully, a World of Warcraft player can look at as “another option” with a different setting and world. The Rift system as well as some other features borrowed from MMORPGs over the past years since World of Warcraft was released does set it apart though enough to appreciate the game’s fresh look at some older concepts.

Rift overall seems to be a game that will appeal to anyone who currently plays MMOs, but it does little to attract someone who does not. Being a veteran MMORPG player over a 13 year period, I appreciate this approach to the game. It makes me feel like the company is respectable enough not to cater it entirely towards new players of the genre.  I feel like Rift will be a hotly debated title for years to come when It comes to “WoW cloning” but what it does, it does right.

Please god i hope you are wrong, i would hate to see the WoW community come into this game. ;)

It has all the standart theme park mmo features, but let´s keep in mind that all of them have been around for some time in one game or another, so WoW clone isn´t very appropriate.

The technical state of the game is almost perfect, which is so rare these days, especially in the mmo market. Sure, there are small problems, but nothing big so far.

Beta was very fun, my only problem is the shortness of it. On the one side it´s good to not spoil the whole game before launch, on the other side, there is only so much you can do in 3 days.

From a marketing standpoint, this is one of the best betas ever.  Rift was under the radar for most gamers, no it has exploded.  It went from a  100k in sales at release to a 500k sales at release game.

As far a technical beta, it was good.  The game was already very polished.  Most of the fixes were server stability.  Most bugs that I noticed or read about were bugs most released games deal with.

Rift/Trion have some of the best developers as far as listening and responding to testers. Regardless if they continue through launch, they are doing an excellent job.

Wow clone? While they do have things in this game that are similiar or identical to things they had in wow, I would say that there are more unique features to this game , than just to call it a wow clone.

Leveling in rift is fun, leveling in wow is a grind you just want to be done with that you mostly do alone or in an instanced dungeon.  I think Rift has alot more to offer a player in regards to leveling , adventure, fun, grouping, the soul system is also a really nice feature and sets this game apart from others.

It was above expectations. I thought the Aion beta was great and polished but the Rift beta was far better than that and gave a much better preview of what to expect than Aion ever did. The fact that so many people are having fun in MMORPGs again makes it a success.

  • XerithXerith Member Posts: 970

Really it felt more like release quality than beta quality, especially after trudging through betas like FFIVX's. More often then not I forgot I was playing beta, and it made me sad that my character was going to get taken away at the end.

  • SoludeSolude Member UncommonPosts: 691

Tutorial zone feels a lot like WAR.  Once in the game proper well... its unique.  Beta was a monster success.  New features go in, tested, fixed and repeat.  That the beta had 34 servers packed to the brim, some even with queues says it all.  We're a month from release and the beta has more players than most live games.  SOE, EA, Bliz are all going to /facepalm for letting these guys walk instead of making the game they wanted.

That said... WoW will be fine =)

Also for anyone playing on a PvP server... dang between the chaos of rifts and other invading war parties adding players to the mix is going to give a lot of players frayed nerves.  Pharma comps take note, boost in beta blocker sales inc =P

This is really a huge point , I never seen any developers really swallow there pride , and then went on to improve the game.

Instead of saying its done deal and lets sell boxes , the pride swallowing is the hardest part , it happened in wow in TBC and WOTLK thats what made them a success .

In cata they are not swallowing , and its slowly killing them ...

When there is a problem a real problem (not some nerf and buff game problem) that a game is fun or not fun .

Thats where developers need to respond , and not just say WAI (working as intended) .

Just hope they make the game beter , but so far they seem to respond quickly each test phase .

WoW clone gets thrown around WAY to much on these forums, its like the comment of the minute. You people talking about WoW clones? try comment cloes. Get an original thought already.

MMO's havent really changed much in YEARS as far as mechanics go, to call something a XXXX Clone simply because it uses current MMO norms that have been around for over a decade for some of its core features is just silly. Considering that gamers these days have such varied tastes, its impossible to please everyone, make a PVP centered game, you've got the pve players saying the game sucks, catter to the pve players, vice cersa. What I see here is that Rift has cattered to the pve population via strong questing content, rifts, invasions, dungeons and raids, while they have alos cattered to the pvp crowd with factions, world pvp, and warfronts....So even though the company has put about everything they CAN into the game, people still whine and complain. My theory is that MMO community at least on this board simply feels far to entitled to...something, which I have yet to nail yet....

I honestly dont get what the soapbox'ers on this website are expecting from developers, seems like you want a life replacment or something? I dont know? I just really cant fathom WHAT people are expecting "next -gen" to be.....

Considering I didnt know anything about rift until Beta 4 and have now pre-ordered and subscribed I would say its a success. I know its not different or the next best thing but what it does accomplish is FUN! I am having a blast with the game and I still dont know all there is to know about everything.

To me this game is refreshing, it puts the best of the best together in one with great Devs that actually seem to listen to the player base in a good way. I enjoy the rift system and the fact at anytime a rift opens and if noone is around to close it then eventually you have things happening everywhere. Total chaos at anytime, you better watch where you logged out!

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

I think it was a good beta. Some didn't like the constant invasions but I really liked them. The quests weren't really interesting enough for me to care if the invasions interrupted my questing.

  • RavenRaven Member UncommonPosts: 2,005

I came into the beta with very little knowledge of the game, before it , I completely dismissed this game, I played around a little bit and didnt find what I wanted it to begin with, played a melee rogue then a warrior.

On the second day however, I started playing the ranger, then I realized I really loved playing it, I found it to be one of the most refreshing classes I have played in a while, the animations are great, the pet is great.

Furthermore towards the end of the beta I realy started enjoying random rifts, it feels really good being part of the event, overall nothing next gen but enjoyable, think I will have fun.

Being in Beta I would say that yes it is successful. I just dont really care for the game much (yes I got to lvl 20 so I really do know...) but really for a Beta it is very polished. I may try it when it is released but that may be further down the line. I hope it meets everyone else's expectations though

  • GoggyGoggy Member Posts: 84

The beta has had its issues, but overall its been really good., tbh one of the best i've ever been in .

We all know the game  has its positives and negatives, but i'd say its a very good alternative to WoW/LOTRO/WAR.

I gave a VIP key to four friends who play various MMO's. They have heard of RIFT but have never tried it.

Since playing they have all pre-ordered the collectors edition.

  • sungodrasungodra Member Posts: 1,376

Before I even was in the RIft beta I was one of those guys that thought RIft was gonna suck, it would be some boring game with crappy graphics.. Something that SOE would throw together. Now after having the pleasure to play in both beta's 4 and 5 I am definately a firm believer in this Game right here.

SWTOR you better watch yourself. We have a contender.   Seriously though, i was waiting on GW2 TOR anything that is knew to get into, wasn't expect I would take such a liking to rift as I have.

Great Game, good luck TRION , Sure does look like it is going to be a blast, and hopefully it will be a major success for 2011.

I thought it was good. I can tell you I logged into the game thinking it would be a boring experience.

But, I'm actually liking it, I will probably pre-order and play until Fire Fall comes out.

I thought it was great.  Big surprise.

Before this beta I hadn't paid a lot of attention to RIFT... was unimpressed from the few videos I had seen... and figured it would be a poor man's version of WAR.

  • edmonaledmonal Member Posts: 188

It was polished, and the dev team was very responsive. After the disasters of the last few AAA MMO releases, it was a nice change. With the talent they have on this team, it's not a surprise.
