In most cases this is just their test server, probably located either in their dev center or in that huge datacenter in the UK. Most companies will have a nice infrastructure of servers already set up for production, pristine, ready to accept a bunch of users. This beta server gets them the stats they need to do final tweaks and get prepared for the onslaught of new players, hopefully for a smooth production day.
