So happy to get my key..Cant connect.. Ohh well, its beta, and I, like other guys who have been doin this a long time expect it. Personaly, I think it's a good thing, weeds out all the instant gratification kiddies..
The old school guys will say, remember what a pain in the a## it was in the begining? And the kids will wait a few months, then join, and complain that their getting rolled by the players who stuck around.
EXACTLY.
Everyone expects MMOs to be all spit & polish on release day. But you know what? That's just UNREALISTIC. There is absolutely NO WAY that a developer that doesn't have virtually unlimited resources can fully prepare for an MMO launch. There is no way to test for massive subscriber numbers until the very end. There is NO WAY (no matter how much you beta) to account for all of the things that a subscriber base is going to do (and find) in the opening month of your game as they learn it.
There is just no financially feasible way to make that happen. So what does happen? The first few months are a paid "charlie" phase. Not quite beta, but hardly finished. This is a FACT in our genre.
It's okay if you don't want to pay to play while things get worked out, tweaked, nerfed and redone. There is nothing wrong with wanting a smooth experience. But you CANNOT expect that experience to happen on day 1 (or even day 30). If that is what you expect, you are going to be limited to Blizzard and (probably) Bioware MMOs. None of these others guys have (or spend) the resources to put a perfect game on the shelf at release (and the perfection of this perfection is DEBATABLE). Its just a reality of the MMO genre. That being said, that perfectly polished we DO get is rarely an awesome game. I would rather time and energy be spent on gaming greatness.
So the opening months of a game are more like an investment. Here developers, have a little bit of my money so that I may invest in the gaming ideas and business model you have going in hopes that the money you are now generating/recouping is going to pay off down the line in the gaming experience I am looking for.
If you don't want to invest in that, then wait. Its really simple. The investers get to learn and get settled in a game sooner, and that is part of their reward.
I don't blame those that wait. I wait most of the time. After so many failed MMOs, shady production company schemes, etc. its hard not to be skeptical. But if you find a developer doing something you are really behind, and acting in a straighforward manner, WHY NOT INVEST.
It is my feeling that ER is a game worth investing in, and I will. Does that mean that I am sure this game is going to be the best ever? Hell no. But I hope it will be, at least one day!
as a veteran gamer myself i completly agree. i think you brought a tear to my eye. your the first sensible person other then my guildmates that ive seen post in these forums.
usually all i ever see is "i keep dcing from the beta server, now i dont want to buy the game" sometimes i jsut wanna shoot those people
The good thing about a rocky release is that it weeds the little instant graftifcation-seeking self entitled kiddie shits out of the game.
The hard part is striking a balance with that rocky release. Its gotta pick up quick or even reasonable, veteran players get the itch to run!
Tis true, ya might get the itch, but with the right guild "Friends", it's easy to wait it out while playing this game and others until it's fixed..

Very true, on a personal level. The balance I was speaking of was more of a larger picture entire game developer sense.
But for sure, in an MMO, gaming experience is 75% who you play with.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Played for 10 min so far, got disconnected twice, but so far so good. character creation is a bit limited, only male/female, face and hair, but the character look good.
runinng on i7m 1.60ghz, GTX260m, 4gig DDR3, a bit of lag now and then.

75%? Maybe 5 years ago, not anymore. Its actually far below less then 25% now adays.
I disagree, which is why the state of MMOs is sorry these days in my eyes due to developers thinking like this.
Perhaps what I really meant to say was "gaming enjoyment" not "gaming experience." My ratio hasn't changed at ALL, despite what game makers and other players may think. You can take the best damn MMO in the world, and if it has a shit community, its a shit game to me.

Hello, I have recently received a beta key for Earthrise. When I get to the tutorial area however I always disconnect with an error message popping up telling me that the server has disconnected me because my zone is currently down. I would really love to try this game, but as of now I cannot log in for more than 5 seconds. Can anybody help?
Yeah, welcome to a beta stress test for an indy game... I've read about similar problems in their official forums, and the concensus is that it's just the server being slammed by more users than it can handle, which is a likely and pretty obvious conclusion. However there has been little or no developer response yet so who knows if it'll get better before the beta ends in a few days.
Yeah if more than 50 players connect it crashes. If you call that a stress test? Well, good luck at launch then! If you can't play with more than 50 people at one time lol.

I don't really care.
I just say to you. Good luck wasting another 50 bucks on another clueless indy company!
And don't give me the usual indy company bull speech. At least the devs from games like Fallen Earth and Perpetuum Online managed to launch an actual stable and playable game.

It's going to launch in 5 days man. If you think they are going to fix all these major issues in just 5 days, while they made everything far worse with yesterdays patch (a patch that would originally be pushed last monday, before they activated the servers again after the first open beta invite wave).
Right. It's funny that peope still seem to believe in miracles these days. Even after so many shady and bad MMO releases these past years. People still keep believing.
Everyone expects MMOs to be all spit & polish on release day. But you know what? That's just UNREALISTIC.
No no no, it's nothing about spit & polish do you sincerly believe that all Earthrise requires is spit and polish? Really? I didn't think so.
It is not unreasonable to expect something to fundementaly work when you buy it. I think it is a shame that apologists defend un-salesworthy goods. No one would put up with it for just about any other product type. If developers knew that people would return stuff if it didn't work perhaps they would not take the p***.
If the cause of these crashes is known, why the eff can they not *hotfix* the damn thing? Is it really too much to expect the game to be playable at a basic level, even if half of the promised features (still on the boxes) are months away? Like I said previously, if *if* they cannot get these issues sorted in several days times, they should do the right thing and not start charging gametime until it is sorted. Otherwise there will be a lot of people who will never ever come back. That is what my mmo experiences tell me.

Dude, you need to calm down. Your pst are borderline rabid and for no reason. Nobody is trying to defend the crap state that this game is in. Nobody believes that they will fix it before release ( ok, there will be at least one tard, but not the majorty ).
So calm down. Darkfall is safe. Earthrise is not a threat to your game, you don't need to endlessly bash it like a shill, Earthrise is doing a fine job bashing itself.
Just chill. Go log in to your favorite stealth class and gank some lowbies or something.

So if you have a game that you love so much, why are you wasting yer time posting?... GO PLAY IT!!
As for ER, I knew from the get go this will be a trial of patience. I am willing to wait for this si-fi sandbox to get it's shi$% together, and yes I'm going to buy.
It's not like STO, where you knew the mechanics were all wrong, and the game would fail..
The core of this game is everything I want, it just needs a lot of love by the dev's. And I belive they will deliver..

^^ Pretty much this. I know the game is in a bad state. But I want it to eventually improve and succeed because it's the type of game I want, a Sci-Fi sandbox(ish).
From what i've heard, it isn't how i would like it and how they describe it.
Crafting is 3 button clicks with no depth. It's hugely gear dependant with no impact from skills or levels. So, you grind for higher gear tiers than levels. There is zero char customisation. All the combat looks the same.
It sounds so vanilla and bland, with less depth than any themepark MMO. This is the case from the live beta stream i watched. I would try it out myself, but they took servers down due to them being unplayable. Regardless, if the lack of customisation, depth and abilities is true, then im not interested as that defeats the whole point of the game.

I like how you take one sentence of a post of that length and reply to it as if the entire rest of the post never happened. No where have I said that I believe ER just needs some spit and polish.
I DO sincerely believe that this game isn't live yet, so there is no way to know one way or another. On release day, this game may very well prove itself to be horridly broken. In which case, I won't be purchasing. But to me broken means the game itself is broken. Connectivity issues (they are going through a host switch), bugs & glitches, etc. aren't going to have me screaming "BROKEN!" at the top of my lungs. However if the hardware usage issues persist, or if the game mechanics themselves are broken, you can be sure I won't be investing now for a better game later.
It all comes down to if this particular Indy Developer is on the up and up. That is IMPOSSIBLE to say until launch happens.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
seriously this is nothing. I sat around during AO beta, sat around for years playing EQ having problems like this during a live production game, UO was laggy as heck on a 33.6 for years and even on a 56k. Heck, even the realm had problems.
and sure, back then, in my early 20's, I got upset, hit my keyboard, etc.. But it grows you up, gives you patience, hopefully. Especially when you realize you feel like a self entitled twirp, like that guy I responded to earlier.

That was then, this is now. I guess I don't need to list the differences but the big one for Masthead is that you get one chance to make a first impression in what is now a crowded and mature marketplace. They need to give themsleves some breathing room (delay) if they want to make this a succes. It's as simple as that. I am going to say "Dark & Light"....there I did, I know that will offend some but it needs to be said.

Because I care. Not only are they about shoot themslves in the foot but their is a very real danger that they are about to blow their brains out. I dispair that a potential great game is about to be flushed down the s*****r. Maybe it is a simple 'bug' that are causing the cluster to drop servers like hot bricks. if I where a betting man I would not take that bet. In any case they need to fix it before launch rather than through it.
I have seen it all before and it never ends well (apart from maybe AoC and they had a million or so box sales to tide them over). I really don't want to see Earthrise go the same way. To re-iterate I care the core of the game is just what I want too, I'd like it to last the 6 months or a year it will need to become what they promise (which again is stuff I want).
