it will take years till most of the players will even be able to handle the "omg this cleric can tank, this mage can heal, ..." system. beta prooved that.

Rift delivers. my estimation is that it will 'beat' SWTOR by far in numbers for example.

I dont think you understand why we want something polished and shiny at launch. It's because it SHOULD BE POLISHED, when you buy a car do they say to you: the paint is not finished but we will send you a paint spray can later on by mail ? NO, they give it to you clean and clear. Why is the MMO industry should work the opposite way?

Dev. treat us like crap and cant deliver something nice. They deserve to bankrupt.

no, but your last gen system  will not handle next gen games :)

whats "next gen"  or shall we call it "this gen" in rift is the design  on the server side, and im sure that that will change the way mmos are made in the future!

Maybe, it really depends on what the other games that comes out this year is using as well.

Don't underestimate Jeff Strain who coded Guildwars 2, I am looking forward to see how he handled the servers as well. And Bioware have some competent people, don't coumnt out TOR yet.

What things from Rift that will be used in the future also depends on what the other games that releases the next 12 months will have.

Nextgen is a rather mysterious word, game devs seems to use it for games with any kind of innovation. Many players on the other hand want innovation on many points including combat. The probblem of course is that if the devs decide all games are nextgen more or less while if most the people who post here decides it is none of the games. So we need something in between.

So far I have only seen some big mobs slam in the ground and people fly away, other turn players into fire. But most of the mobs stand still and scream in pain "oocgh oh oh arrghh ah ah ahhh ah ohh", maybe they move the arms a little like if they are having sex from behind.... it sure look wierd.

It would be awsome if they could grab players or slam the fist in the ground that make a huge hole or whatever. Or if they could do something else then just stand still! Do they make dmg at all? Maybe they hurt players with the mind. So you can't see any attacks... hmm.

For a game coming out 2011 it sure don't have much action. Still in Beta I know, but what can they change? Not much.

What was promised that they didn't deliver in the beta?

absolutely nothing. most people posting here are simply haters and idiots. played the beta and it was simply the most amazing mmo experience ive ever encountered, and this is coming from eq, wow, daoc, war, eve, and ddo experience. if people are gonna find things to qq over like the combat system being the same as every other SUCESSFULL mmo since the beginning of time, well i just think thats people being dumb. nuff said.

Ya know, "Next Gen" is probably the most useless term ever coined in the world of MMORPGs or video games in general.

Simple fact of the matter is this: You will never, EVER, know what next generation is until after it has become dominant. Sure, games like WoW got hype, but all MMORPGs do. No one at Blizzard came out and said "We have a game that is going to completely take over the MMORPG market and have over 12 million subscribers!".

The only way your going to find out what games truly are next generation is by looking back in about 5 years.

Can someone define "Next generation" in a single, objective, way, as opposed to meaning "This combat is a lot like this one game I played, and not enough like this other game I played which I liked better"? It seems people are saying "This isn't next generation!" when they mean "I wanted a combat system with feature X, and even though they never promised it and I had no reason to expect it, I'm still going to be angry I didn't get feature X! Why didn't they read my mind and make the game I imagined, instead of the game they wanted to make?"

"Generation" is generally a meaningless term when looking forward. Only when looking backward, and writing histories, can you actually make such divisions based on the adoption of broad trends and systemic changes. "Physics" or "twitch based" or "combo" or whatever are of no particular generation.

I mean, *my* idea of "next gen" is a system where you "build your own" combat/spell/etc maneuvers from a set of building blocks, each offering various factors of risk/reward, so you might have a high power attack with a %chance to stun, but it halves your defenses and costs triple endurance/mana/whatever. Respeccing should be hard to avoid FOTM builds and redesigning your character based on what you want to kill. Another "next gen" system might be one where you know a large number of attacks, powers, etc, but only a small number - 8 to 12 - will be made randomly available in any combat, cycling as you use them, and you need to be clever enough to know how to make the most of what you've got at any moment, without being able to front-load your hotbar and memorise 1-3-2-6-7-shift-repeat.

But those are my personal dreams, certainly nothing promised, and probably nothing like most people's idea of "next gen".

In these times, games use the words Next-Gen way to lightly.

So.... your idea of a "next generation MMORPG" is, uhm, DikuMUD, circa 1992, only with no quests.

    Got it.

I didn't come across anything revolutionary in Rift but I think that most would agree, what it does it does well.  The game play is fun and it's polished and smooth running.  I've played for quite a few years and in many MMOs and I found myself enjoying the beta enough to be saddened when the last leg of it ended on Saturday.

I'm looking forward to it's release March 1st.

It's not Rockem Sockem, it's Whack-a-mole, and that's how PC mmo gaming is done. You don't get next gen until PC loses it's keyboard.
