Beta5 was a stress test, of a-holes as well as pop and invasions, once the idiots leave it will go back to the way it was, at the end of the beta is was much better, and i experiences some very positive chat and partying. If you are helpfull enough, and work at it,  you can play your part in fostering a positive community.

Agreed community is horrible.  the worst cty i saw in an open/closed beta. I was  BT on Aion tabula rasa lotro age of conan POTBS GnH  etc.

Rift is for wowers what could you expect ?

Not sure this game will make it after Beta.

So both the trolls and the good guys will leave these forums.

That is kinda sad that there is a booby thread, and I know what the OP is saying about in game chat... It got so bad on the first day that I just had to leave the level 1-9 chat because they were irritating me so bad.  However, some of the guilds and people that are actually participating in the beta are pretty cool.

I guess all I'm saying is that there are going to be some that are immature and just want to troll the chat and forums, but judging from the majority of players that I've played with it seems like these people won't have a place at endgame... hopefully.

Trion? I never see them around.

I feel like I'm in some weird twilight zone.

I have read Rift forums since day 1 (actually, technically from before, when it was HoT) and it's always been the same in tone if not in content.

I can't post too much here these days about how I feel about or think of Rift for obvious reasons, but suffice to say yeah your right. It won't get better either.

No it hasn't always been like that at all. Go back to the first 4 months and the community was great because Trion were promoting a different type of MMO that they have actually made. WOW was hardly ever mention,it was games like EQ1-Vanguard that RIFT was being compared to.

By the way, i am sure i have meet you in Sirens Grotto years ago?

I doubt that, I never played a character called Ves in EQ, but hello to an old school MMOer nonetheless :)

This is why majority of mmo's have the feature to leave chat channels. Plus since this is a new game, most people are going to flock to it to see what it is all about. So of course you're going to get both the good and bad side of things.

Makes you feel better majority of the people leave after beta.

When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?

Aion was the worst community I have ever seen in the chat channels during the later stages of beta when they started giving out keys like candy.

As bad as it has gotten in this game and some other games as of late, I will say that nothing surpasses the level of stupidity and vitriol  displayed by the majority of players in that game towards one another and amongst the community in general.  Least on my server and on the forums in general.

As Ersol said though, once the game actually launches it will simmer down.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

My experience with the community has been mostly the same-old-same-old. Usually people spend their time comparing the game to another; completely different game. I usually turn off chat when this happens as it often spirals downward at this point. So far, the community in Rift is what I've seen in virtually every other new MMORPG out there. Heck, even some older MMORPGs suffer from this problem from time-to-time.

This is the one major thing that WoW did to the MMO community that I can't stand.

Previous to WoW the amount of "asshats" was a very small number in comparison to now.

Now we have a few million teeny bopper, Bieber fans who act like monkey's because parents don't watch intently what their kids are doing on their computers.  You know 98% of them wouldn't be playing online if their parents knew 1/4 of what they say or how they act.  There's also that anonymity factor.  Everyone can be a tough guy sitting comfortably behind a computer monitor knowing full and well that nobody will see their true self.  For a kid, that's a pretty powerful thing.  Hell, that's powerful for any age that isn't happy with their real life.

The best thing we can do for them AND us is utilize the ignore feature.  If enough of us partake in it's usage, sooner or later those "asshats" will realize they can't get much done without others.

How do you judge a mmo community when half of the people in game and on the forums are free players with no intention of buying the game?

Why dont we wait a bit after the game releases to do that.

I get the same feeling I got from VG forums (and game chat). I'm sad to admith there are too many gamers that despise WoW and think anyone else gives a crap if they despise WoW. Unfortunately, most of them reside in my demographic.

NEWS FLASH: WoW didn't destroy the fantasy MMO genre, technology and accessibility forced it's evolution.

Sounds like any mmorpg forums to be honest. There's crap people who bash and make noise, and there's a lot more people who dont bother to use the forums most of the time because they know they just get targetted by the crap people and the OP gets buried in flames.

I wish that one of the new games devs would have balls enough to put so strict moderation to their forums that any thread in crap-teen-asshole-cool-boy tone would be deleted and the user banned, only allowing the threads that are in civilized manner and which contained some actual info, concerns, whatever.

Right now the crap-stuff is allowed because the devs/publisher propably are afraid to loose customers so; Give a separate junk-forums for the cesspool people to have their way, with minimal moderation, a place that anyone else can avoid.

I quit visiting the Rift Forums and I turned off general chat in game.  It's a shame.  Trion moderators are working hard though, they are locking and removing threads as fast as the idiots can create them.

Rift doesn't really have a community right now.  Months after release once the dust settles is when you can get the best idea for how a game's community will turn out.

Amen. Beta communities really isn't a community. It takes at least 3 months after launch until a new community forms.

It's the MMORPG as a whole.  Yes there are some cool gamers out there, but a disease hit the community about 4 years ago.

Rift is a very polished game with great potential, but all you will here is how much of a WoW clone it is, how it isn't innovative, and combat is boring.

I am here to tell you that I have played and tested just about everything noteworthy out there and this game is good.

I am getting sick of reading these forums............Children

Ehhh it's a beta forum and the controversy in the threads only helps their advertising as people are TALKING about the game. Guarantee once the game goes live they'll start handing out warnings and temp bans like any other forum.

I agree, to an extent. However, I think Trion bears some culpability with their "We're not in Azeroth anymore" marketing campaign. I doubt there will ever be bans for bashing WoW.

I still think RIFT is a great game and exactly what the genre needs. I just don't care for all the hate in forums/chat. It harshes my mellow.

Hm I looked it up, it's a bit confrontational.

Maybe it attracted the wrong crowd, if that part of the trailor is going after the WoW players who aren't welcome in WoW or are quitting, you might not even get the "good section" of the WoW crowd. There's decent people in WoW too, just not everyone.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

I rather have them do all this on the forum than in game, like f*ck I'll rage if someone starts flame wars on the chat box........

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

This sounds like every recent MMO release to date for the most part; completely normal.

It would be the Twilight Zone if people DIDN'T argue about these things.

The entire community cannot be judged by the comments of a few or even many, out of the one hundred thousand registered on the trion forums, the majority of the post are by the same people.  A person is typically 4 times as a likely to post on a forum to troll or complain about something than they will to praise or lift up a community.  I have and will play rift and I have played mmo's for almost 14 years now, does that mean because i am old school that this somehow makes me a better online personality, not likely since most consider me an elitest jerk.  What it boils down to is the fact that people tend to be something they are not when they are online.  The ones who really stick out are the vocal people who frequent forums, I spent like a week talking on the forums and my blood pressure almost doubled with the amount of illogical nonsense people spew, but its the internet and even the worst people have a voice.

As far as this whole thing about the rift generation being rude just because the video had the " We are not in Azeroth anymore" line attached; I will be completely honest that I don't know how a logical human being that is thousands of years removed from cavemen can honestly spew that nonsense and believe it.  Trion takes the genre seriously and they are challenging for the market share that wow currently controls.  Their intention doesn't have to fall in line with the fact that you like or dislike a game, wow is the most popular mmo to date, but I knew many people who refused to play it and stayed in eq1.  You will have the same thing with people who play wow, its all they know and ever want to know, however I do see a large shift in the climate of mmo's and trion is one of the few companies to really get things right when it comes to development and no one can deny that their product and development team is top notch, regardless of your own personal flavor.  That is a good thing for everyone regardless because it raises the bar and sets an example to other companies that have great ideas but fail to bring those ideas to life due to poor development.
