I was in the beta (and i am utterly spoiled by the quality of the Rift beta) and i was quite impressed. It was a rather average at best beta from an indie developer, but the game worked.
At the moment, the game has some serious problems, however i have expected worse.
I have not crashed once, however i did desync which killed me a few times. (dying in a game where you need insure items is quite a major annoyance).
Another issue was the performance. I have a barely OK laptop, so a low FPS is something i am used to. This wasn't an issue for me, the thing that troubled me was very poor optimisation. My game FPS was around 30, which is good enough even with Earthrises combat system, but it liked to randomly drop to 10 or even 2 when i was walking around for no apparent reason.
I have not played long enough to experience much of the content, so I am not going to judge if there is enough to keep players occupied.
Last issue was the UI and controls. Rift kinda holds your hand throughout everything, it was nice to not play the minimap in this game. However, some quests were really unclear about what they want. The UI was unresponsive and i was unable to remap the controls (WTH?) which annoyed me to no end.
Overall though, the game works and is playable. I have no enjoyed it much I must admit, but it felt "different" which matter a lot to me and will probably make me sub in a few months if the game is alive.

Good post, I think it is fair to say that the game works, but is very rough around the edges right now. Optimization is something that Masthead commented on, as well as many other last minute fixes before release. I was just afraid that the game wasn't going to work at all when I started to test, but it was just the sheer numbers of testers on in the same areas while I was there that bogged everything down and caused crashes.
The past couple of days have been much better. It is like the total opposite of Rift. I love Rift, don't get me wrong, but Earthrise is a game where you'll need to figure some things out for yourself sometimes. I actually had to explore an area for a quest NPC that I needed to speak to. While exploring, I encountered a few different PvP battles, some mobs, a few crash sites that had items I looted, and some spectacular sights ( I love the games art and the graphics are good).
If you are tired of being led down a path, from one zone to the other, then this is the type of mmo you should try. Although, it remains to be seen if the game will be up to most peoples standards at release.
best part is when you get lost and end up with invisible walls and empty camps and no npcs miles around
this game needs at least a year more of development before it's finished
According to the old forums (which are now replaced by the Official subscriber Forums) this is a known issue that Masthead is fixing for release.
There is a lot of problems, I don't think anyone who tested would say otherwise. I just comes down to what interests people, and how much patience people are willing to have with an Indie developer in it's first try.
I'll be playing Rift because it's a sure thing. I'll be playing Earthrise because it's going to be an adventure.
I didn't manage to get lost, and hopefully before i decide to buy this game, there will be no unpopulated areas.
I feel the same as above poster though, Earthrise could possibly prove to be a good "advanture" if it has the content to explore and if someone can overlook the flaws (i am tolerant but would rather play the game 3-4 months after release).
Been looking forward to this game for ages and my summary impression is as follows:
HUGE potential but needs a HUGE amount of polish.
Many people have mentioned the controls but I didn't mind these as I've been testing another game with a similar set-up. Hope to be able to change them - if required - in the release version.
Absolutely love the graphics and art style but I've got a seriously badass graphics card and it rendered like crap on my PC. GFX need a lot of work - especially the animations and overall performance - but they could be the best thing since sliced bread if they turn out right.
Only other thing I thinks worth mentioning is the choice of release date: TERRIBLE IDEA! This game could be a good long-term investment and would probably pull a fair few people at launch but the potential number will be sliced down bad by the on-going RIFT beta. The polish and familiarity (which isn't always a bad thing) of that game contrasts really favourably against Earthrise and I think the release timing will hurt initial subs badly, possibly even sinking the game if the devs can't shine it up fast.
I'm a bit gutted coz you really get the feel the release date has been imposed on the game rather than been reached naturally. I REALLY hope it won't but I do think the game will suffered heavily as a consequence.
