Apparently the game isn't as expensive as people thought.

Either that or they're going for 80 dollar a month sub fees.

Or they are blantantly lying. Considering we're talking about EA here, that's the most likely option. Sounds like the marketing department is awkwardly attempting to do some damage control.

This wasn't a marketing call.  It was a financial call.  I highly doubt they would lie about their projections.

2 mil boxes at launch easy. for the sake of argument say 2/3 drop off after 3 months. still way more than forecast. still tho, they will have a solid 1 mil+ subs.

Hey, can you wizards at MMORPG.com actually do some research before you regurgitate bad statements?  They specifically said that the game will be released in the 2011 calendar year and probably at the beginining of fiscal year 2012. Which means this May.

Also, what's this talk about Bioware having so many more fans than Anet?

Bioware sells ~2 millions of their games on PC, if they're lucky (and a bit more on console). KOTOR sales were lower than Mass Effect.

GW sold ~2 million of each edition. Sounds like the playing field is pretty even...

How many of those GW buyers were console players or people that generally didn't play mmorpgs? I would guess not many. Bioware has a much larger following than A-net. Also why are we discounting other platform sales for Bioware? I think the game will have quite a few console players coming over to play TOR.

as always ... if a company hear to the  community feedback to much there is the danger that a few  very loud persons have a bad influense on a game and not speaking for the lots...

we will see how it comes out..

in general it is a good idea to have a different game instead of having another WOW clone, because of each WOW clone has failt and will fail

still the open question   about the endgame is there and if Bioware has a good answer for it will estimate the fate of the game

GW had tons of players who didn't play mmos before, because they were reluctant to start a game with a monthly fee. Actually, GW wasn't really popular among the mmorpg PvE crowd at all, because they felt it was lacking in that regard. And I doubt console players will come over if they have to buy upgrades for their PC to play.

Unless all the news that we've heard and seen is somehow off base, this game's collapse is going to be a block buster.

The underlined part makes me laugh.  We ahven;t seen swuat when it comes to this game and all teh sudden they aren't listening to player feedback.

Plus, its kind of hard to listen to players and subscribers when there isn't any right now.

Come now, obviously if Bioware doesn't listen to feedback from random people who haven't actually played the game in any way and post in a non-bioware run and moderated forum they are obviously arrogant and evil !!!

Also I am a susbcriber!!!!I'm paying a future subscripton right now with non existant future money!

it's easy for them to turn a profit at 500k subscribers.  If they are spending 150 million on production and whatever to bring this game to the masses.  Then 500K subscribers will suffice for a month after the free month.  Sale of the game say the avg price of 49.99 (or more for CE's) and the going rate of most subs 14.99.  That equates to 64.98 for the sale of 1 game with 1 month sub after the usual free month, times 500k=32,490,000...whether its the game everyone thinks or wants it to be is one thing, but for then to turn a profit almost immediately won't be hard.

    Just my 2 cents...

I am still looking forward to it and hopefully it pans out to be a great game!!!

They're gonna get my money (and all of my free time), that's for sure!

  • cloudstrikercloudstriker Member UncommonPosts: 8

I'm actually happy that this game isn't getting much hype anymore. Lower expectations can work in Bioware's favor at this point. They could have a truly awful game, but I think once  the public has this game in their hands, the line will be 'hey, its not as bad as we thought, come give it a try.'.

good hype - bad hype...guess what? People who don't even play MMO's know about Old Republic. That's saying something. imo

  • EndDreamEndDream Member Posts: 1,152

    easy breezy for Bioware

    Remember Old School Ultima Online

  • zazzzazz Member UncommonPosts: 408

Bioware are savvy , they will recoup there investment on box sales alone i have no doubt and whatyever the box sales are 1million 2 million...thats how many subs you have too.

Now retention is a different thing im sure most will pass there free 30 days and sub for atleast one month , so really these guys will be throwing cash into the air in jubilation regardless and wiping there arses on £$20 notes.

They keeping quiet and when it gets close to teh release date you can be sure they gona be advertising hard on ever medium from tv to magazines , these guys know what they doing they the proffessionals 95% here just think they are.

    and it's Bioware.

The last time a major company developed an MMO... the entire MMO genre collapsed and ceased to exist.

We going to have another apocolypse? Probably not. Not enough differences in this game.

I dunno. For some reason The Old Republic has lost a lot of steam for me. It's like I just don't care about it anymore, and I'm not really sure why.

If you're not playing a BioWare game because it's a BioWare game, or a Star Wars game because it's a Star Wars game, but only playing it because it's an MMO and you're expecting it to behave like any other MMO you've experienced in the past, you're setting yourself for disappointment everytime you try anything that's not WoW or EVE, you know? ;)

500k to turn a good profit.  Much less to break even.

I don't think box sales are going to be a problem for this game, 2-3 million easy.

I think they'll be able to draw a lot of new players to MMO's, which will help them out without needing to 'steal' players from other games.

    Not hard math here.

1,000,000 people buy $49 boxes.  You are making back $49,000,000 right there.  Assume that overall, 500,000 people subscribe for a year, at the nominal cost of $14, and you are up to $133,000,000 in year 1.   It is fair to say this game could be in the $1,000,000 in development costs.   Odds rather favor it.  If it is technically sound at launch, meaning few bugs, and has a quality experience, I can see selling several million boxes, and if many quit in year 1, then they'll still see the equal of several million subscribers.

    BUT......

The MMO world is fickle, and big-name flops are all around.  And gameing bloggers are not the only ones hedging their bets.  This PR move was intended to quash the growing body of Wall Street analysts who are looking at MMO history, and playing the odds.  They are asking what will make SWTOR different, and that is something everybody would like to know.

Er, mean to type "However, Biowares complete disregard to gamer feedback and their arrogance towards us lowly subscribers seems to mean they are going to put out an MMO that fits 'their' vision, not one that MMO players want and will pay for."

This is a good thing and this is what makes every piece from Bioware a work of art. Commercialization is what destroys such art.

This will be the next MMO Juggernaut. Its Star Wars and if Bioware makes an MMO thats just up to standards of todays top MMO's it will do well. Make it only slightly better and it will be huge. IMO Bioware will do a great job with this much like Blizzard did in making their first MMO.
