As for default ingame maps, there are some but most zones don't have maps. That's why people download the map packs. I'm pretty sure the maps will be disabled until a certain expansion on the TLP server.
Which are hand drawn maps of all the zones leading up to Planes of Power. It may be useful
Hope this helps!
Thanks! I'm so curious to see these places I keep hearing about.. Kithicor Woods at night, Freeport, Befallen, Rivervale, Highhold, and there's some newbish dungeon I keep hearing a lot about involving gnomes... Can't wait

Kithicor at night in EQ is awesome, especially when you're a newbie. There are a lot of dark places in EQ if you're into it.
-Unrest is a very dark zone full of undead mobs, great for the teen levels 'til 20's.
-Mistmoore Castle is another dark zone, full of vampires. Yes vampires in MMO's = awesome.
-Lesser Fay, I don't want to spoil it for you, but look out for creatures that you can barely see..
EQ's night & day cycles really do bring a lot of RPG values to the game. It's something that's missing in a lot of newer MMO's. And if you think night time is bad, try nightime + rain or snow. Yikes!
One low level zone I had tons of fun in was Befallan. Fighting your way down to the bottom or jump down the well brings back fond memories. South Freeport was fun with a tough named NPC Dorn B'Dyn. He seems to spring up at the wrost of times but it was fun because there wasn't any other game like Eq.
as a former necro i see only one problem with disabling ooc, now people will demand necros "twitch" again. urgh i hated doing that, no matter how much people claimed it helped, it was still bloody boring. well at least lich will count for something again i suppose, sad i can't be an iksar at first

Oh don't complain, necros were so overpowered it wasn't even funny. The only caster class that did not require mana regen buffs, and the only caster class that could kill everything prior to summoning mobs being introduced
As much as I love original EQ and I support this server I wont touch it with a ten foot pole. Corpse runs and original mana regen rates? Yuck.
i agree, about the only classes i would play would be necro or shaman, original regen rates were the worst thing about the game. why it took me ages to even play a class that didn't have a spell for mana regen corpse runs? painful but at least you don't have to do them naked, i wonder if they are changing the exp rate or not? urgh old school exp rate = terrible!!!

lol well i didn't start playing until kunark, since my pc couldn't run the game hence why i was sad i can't play an iksar. at least now i won't have my pets go poof anymore, that was annoying. heck now, most casters will be more powerful, i doubt they will change the spells lol.

They're not, no matter how much they've tweaked, it won't be as slow and painful as the old days. So no hell levels to worry about, no corpses with your gear on that you just HAVE to get. People exaggerate a tad too much, I really don't think corpse runs without gear on them is bad. Just as the mana regen rate, no matter what, will not be as slow as they once were. At least you will actually make friends with enchanters & bards again, rather than be the soloist that we see in today's EQ where they're merely buff bots.
The lack of OOC regen is temporary until a certain expansion opens, hardly game breaking. The ridiculous part is to imagine classic content WITH out of combat regen. It would trivalize just about everything and make it a joke of an experience to re-live EQ.

I hear that! I remember getting lost in kith forest when it was raining and night time I was genuinely scared! It's a very nice aspect of the game you wouldn't think would have a huge impact, but it really does.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
Just got done buying the game, I'm very excited to relive this piece of MMO history. I really hope people are friendly/group a lot. That's really what I miss, the grouping and socializing, with people even outside their guilds.
Also, for anyone interested in reliving some memories, episode 1 and 2 of this podcast will get those old memories flowing.
So I need some advice, I almost always play a tank character in MMOs, but I hear EQ1 mages have a lot of really neat utility spells like shape shifting and such. What would you suggest I do? Maybe I can make two guys.

I say if you wanna tank go war maybe pally or sk but warriors you will always find a group with them if you can keep good agro. Go mage if you wanna solo b/c thats what ends up happing with most of them class's they end up soloing. Bards are good if you can twist songs great utility to them and can find a group easy if you can play them. They can also tank somewhat if you know how to play them but would still be hard to keep agro on mobs.
better int caster classes for soloing are wizards, enchanters, necromancers
Necros were solo gods in the early days, prior to summoning mobs being introduced into the game. Hands down, no contest. Necros have pretty much everything other caster classes have, and best of all they don't require clarity.
Mages however do catch up in power later on, their pets will become more and more powerful. As summoning mobs started to show up in later expansions, mage pets can tank mobs straight up with a healer. Where as necro pets won't be able to.

Best you play what you enjoy. Tanks in EQ are very important, but then I think it's the same case with other games. But tanks don't solo, so if you play a tank, you are pretty much committing yourself to grouping with others. If that's your thing, you will do just fine as long as you learn to play your class well. Tanks in EQ are not about dps, they're about holding agro so other people can do the dps.
Mages are fun, their greatest asset is their pets. They don't shape shift, you're thinking about Enchanters. Mages only get a few elemental shapes by way of AA's later on. But the true masters of illusions are the enchanters, and they'll be very important in the group game. Chanters are *the* crowd control class in EQ. They also have the best charm. They'll also be loved for their mana regen buffs, haste, and slow debuffs.
It's your choice, play what you find fun in. Don't be afraid to roll multiple classes to try them out.

Enchanters are good at cc but bards are not bad at that 2 in groups. Also tanks can solo with good gear Sk's and Pally's can solo if they wanted War's is harder to do. Bards charm is great until i think it gets past the lvl 60 1 when they have lesser range.
Eh I am just a bard lover was my first eq char and will make another 1 for this server. Though twisting again is goin to blow.

Oh don't get me wrong, bards are good. Just that the guy I was responding to described an enchanter rather than a mage. Bards are great in groups, they can cc & charm, but they focus more on single target cc. While enchanters have the best cc capabilities due to the aoe mez/stuns.
But a bard is fun for sure, I have one on the regular server. They're a great melee alternative to enchanters. Once you go bard speed it's hard to go back. They will eventually become one of the best pullers due to their fade AA's. Also fyi, you will have access to /melody command so you won't hate on twisting as much.
Mardy, are you sure /melody will be available on this server? That makes a huge difference in bard gameplay...
Not 100% sure as the devs haven't had a chance to answer that question specifically. But it'll most likely be answered during the Livecast on Feb 10th. I'm going off by what other posters seem to indicate that /melody would be in.

I would say /melody is going to be in as it was to help bards because they were getting arthritis from all that clicking.

There is an in-game map feature which was added in later expansions.
They haven't given details on whether or not this feature will be disabled. (I'm hoping it is)
Back in the day we had to resort to this website:

Befallen was definitely fun, I used to fall and not able to find my way out lol.
Sro is also good at night, because I swear them damn sandman are so hard to see at night. So out of nowhere you're getting nuked.

Nuff said.
