Not 100% sure as the devs haven't had a chance to answer that question specifically.  But it'll most likely be answered during the Livecast on Feb 10th.  I'm going off by what other posters seem to indicate that /melody would be in.

I would say /melody is going to be in as it was to help bards because they were getting arthritis from all that clicking.

If you we're clicking as a bard, you were doing it wrong.  you had 6 hotkeys the first 4 of which we're you're primary twist songs. :)

I'm vehemently against /melody it takes character away from the bard players.

It automates the twist, thats all.  It allows a bard to actually chat with his group when its OK for things to be on semi autopilot.  You could still manually twist for better results when you wanted.

This launch will be nuts.  I can only imagine 500 people cramming into Crushbone to kill the orcs :P...

Still, 500 will be much better than the 1 I am hunting orcs in there, though it is nice to have all the mobs to myself, but it isn't nice to have no one to talk to or group with.

I am thinking halfling druid though, so I may just be over in runny-eye instead, which I hope/bet will be less populated than the infamous Crushbone!

Then again I am also thinking wood elf bard, so who knows!

Just have been "practicing" on Draenel(sp)-(mergedservername) rolling characters without mercenaries or platinum or gear, going at it old school and completing the quests so I remember at release what to do and where to go :P

Feel free to come to my server and do it as well!  Or if there is already a group doing it on another server, let me know, ill come join ya!

Then again, EQ classic plus Kunark is still one of my favorite all time experiences.

i'm curious if the buffs/nerfs given to a few spells will remain. Also, some of you may remember that spells were handed out every 4 levels. Healing spells were given to druids/shamans much later than they are now. I wonder if that will change, as well.

Lol?  What?  Eleven years and over a dozen expansions later and people are here lining up for this progression server.  When was the downfall?

lol, never underestimate the power of 500 people!

Heck, DAoC release, we took about 250+ hibernians to 1 midgard keep, all of us were levels 5-25 (there were a few 35s) and we took that keep! (eventually) but sadly the server crashed shortly there-after, resetting the keep.

I was in Crushbone yesterday, (alone of course, any old zone is generally dead) and ran several train to zones.

Even funnier I was in Gfay at the orc camp and got too many and yelled  "Train to orc lift"! and there just so happened to be someone at orc lift who laughed and said "I haven't heard a train to orc lift in years!"

I cannot wait for the progression server to open!  I play a little every day but am not enjoying it so much as my only companion is my NPC mercenary, and he just doesn't understand my jokes...

I agree with you it does take away from the character in a way. I remember the old progession server when i went back some groups were shocked when i joined and was twisting 4 songs. They where like every bard i grouped with only played 1. If it is in at the start some of the bards will end up using it hell I will start using it when i have my skills up higher so they dont stop every 2 seconds dunno if that changed or not.

But twisting was always 1 way to weed out the good players from the bad ones.

Also when they had the old progression server unrest was fun there were 50 or so people in that place hard to find a camp spot.

I am so looking forward to this as well.  My only current dilemma is that I would like to get in BlackBurrow and the Qeynos area but I'm starting as a halfling druid.  I don't get bind until level 12, in which case it's too late.  So I might be better off just sticking to the Rivervale/FP/Commonlands area instead....but the zone revamp sucks!  I suppose I can pay someone to bind my if I try and travel there at level 5 or so.

Come to think of it...I might want to actually avoid BB during launch as it will be camped up the wazoo!  Never did try runneyeye much....now might be my chance!

Looking to play on this server, but I've never played EQ1 before. Where is the best place to learn all the old school leveling spots and what races go with what classes best and what not? Thank for any help guys. Looking forward to this.

We are starting as halflings for that very reason (well, thats one of the reasons...). Our loose plan is to hide and level there (playing euro time) until 12 or so, maybe even later if we can get groups in RE or GoKX.

I am sure there will be people willing to bind you at Q gates pretty early on for free though if you want to join the humans.

tbh, I am not sure what to recommend anymore that would cater well for old school.. maybe check out the sites for the Mac version, or even P99... they both are all about classic so might have resource.

I know older sites like EQatlas are still up ( http://www.eqmacwiki.com/eqatlas/atlas.html ) and there is also a nice community forming on the Fippy unofficial site ( http://www.fippydarkpaw.com/ ). You will find some links on their front page and most of their posters are friendly vets.

Hope this helps some, sorry I cant give more. Been away a while myself :)

Additional info posted by Ngreth (EQ's lead crafting dev):

    Dev-Ngreth wrote:

    We changed our mind.

Old jewel-craft will be re-enabled until an appropriate expansion, then swapped at that appropriate expansion.

This means the old jewelcraft will be there at launch.  It will not utilize the new jewelcraft system until appropriate expansion.  They continue to do more and more to make it feel "classy" image

And more info about the player voting:

    Dev-Ngreth wrote:

We are working on a new poling systems.  You will even see a new button on the EQ button in the February patch, but the system is not done yet, and will not be complete until the March patch, which is still plenty of time for progression since the absolute minimum will be 90 days before a vote is needed, though we can hope for more!

We will be able to restrict the poll to just the progression server, AND we plan to even level limit it so people can't be scabs and just create a level 1 character to vote... they have to get to a certain level, I.E be a player on the server.  The voting will be account based, not character based, so each account gets 1 vote.

Rough time estimate on when Fippy will be live on Tuesday:

    Dev-Ngreth wrote:

    Najae wrote:

Is there an official time for when the server is going to open?  I'd love to get confirmation of the rough estimated time, such as 6 am PST on the 15th.

ROUGH estimate, 10am PST on the 15th.

    Regarding exp rate:

    Dev-Ngreth wrote:

Hell levels are not back.  We did not restore the original curves, instead we just slowed down experience gain overall.  It will use the current "curves" but exp gain has been slowed.

Classes will be what they are "now"

After reading the dev replies I'm a bit turned off by the teleporters instead of boats and the revamped Freeport that was beyond bad IMHO.  I'm on the borderline if I'm going to come back and this might push me to give Rift a try. Will have to see the podcast on Thursday before I decide.

  • SamatmanSamatman Member UncommonPosts: 123

I took a boat tour a couple days ago.  Most of the boats don't exist.  Some of the boats exist, but if you take one, you get tossed off and never zone.  The one boat that worked was perhaps the most critical for Fippy - the Freeport to Butcher boat.  I waited 11 minutes for it and I don't enjoy fishing.  On the plus side, it stopped at every island it was supposed to, and it felt extremely old school.  I mean, even my patience was stretched.

Freeport, and every other zone they tried to improve are going in.  Most of them feel the same, except that your personal memorized landmarks look different.  It`s just a matter of refreshing our memories so that they jibe with the refreshed graphics.  I`ll probably turn off ground clutter to make it look more original.  The new grasses and shrubs look great but aren`t classic at all.

Freeport itself... meh.  I never spent much time there, and I won`t this time around either.  They could cut it completely and I`m not sure I`d notice when I`m sitting in lower guk.  Even in original EQ it was a 3 zone mess.  It`s still the same confusing 3 zone mess.  I`ll still get out as fast as I can.

Trade will happen in the EC tunnel.  Is Freeport that important?

Wow, I'm glad I happen to see this today. I had no knowledge of SOE starting a classic server. I've been bouncing around games and mmo's for the last year.

BIg Question is: Will my Troll Shaman have his original Home back? I so hated the fact that SoE gave Frogloks my starting area.

Also will it be the original graphics or the updated. Im referring to when they updated graphics the first time. My Troll when from looking really slovenly and hideous to a "I just got out of Jenny Craig and saw a Chiropractor".

Really looking forward to playing with a really great community and hoping to find some old friends there as well. Maybe I'll get my wife to play as well.

The grafics and starting area are the same from what the devs said so sorry if that isnt what you wanted to hear but for them to do a 100% classic server it will be very hard and the devs have also said they are waititng to see how long the players get bored with just opening up to velious before they move onto the SoL expansion i think PoP will take the longest if they locked the progression where you need flags and keys to get.

You get to pick what character models you want to use, whether the old classic models or luclin models.  There's a choice in the launcher options or in eqclient.ini file.

It's not a classic server, Not even close ! It's a half assed progression server that SOE tries to imply is a classic server.  Monks will be WAY over powered on this server. As in 5 expansions over powered.  Spell damage/spells are still the buffed up version. No corpse runs. Translocaters. Weapon augs and weapon bonus will be in game. Clarity at level 14 .... The list is long.

If you want as close to original EQ as possible, Google P1999. If you want a slower progression progression server with slower exp gains, Fippy is for you. And your Troll Shaman will have his home town at the start.

    Well...

After playing RIFT hardcore in the warfronts and in open land PvP (14 hours the last 2 days), it is readily apperhent..  that if you do not plan on ultra-macro'ing (ie: automating) your toon, then you stand no chance against these newbie guilds who treat MMORPG's as arcade games.

There is no reason to analyze any aspec of gameplay, RIFT is a dumbed down version of the MMOG genra.  Perfect for those kids who want something newer than WoW.

I've been looking for a MMORPG... to get lost in. Quite impossible in RIFT. So, i'll resub Everquest & see if SOE hasn't dumbed down EQ to the point of insulting me & go from there.

Time locked progression is since Everquest has so many expansions and a lot of newer players find catching up to the current content to be a very daunting and overwhelming task. Time locked means that they start out on the very first Everquest that was released and when that content is beaten, the next expansion will open after the vote to do so.

Plus a lot of the older players find the apeal of starting out completely fresh to be a very attractive idea. The server will be absolutely flooded and will be great.

Last time they did this they had so many players they had to open a second server. But those servers were not time locked like this one.

This server will be active for several years with the time frame they are on. 90 days grace period + voting from the server population.

I just found out SOE screwed up my account and am now completely Free2Play (as long as it'll last I guess).

Since I found EQ1 too verwhelming to start with last year, I quited it. Now with Free2Play (as long as it lasts) I might give the progression server a try ;-)

One small question. I can just install EQ1 from the launcher and then logon to the progression server, right?
