I have been following this game for over a year now, probably closer to two and I have to say I am thoroughly disappointed. I cant really comment on how the gameplay is, or how the economy works because I didnt get the chance to even get that far.
Excitedly, a couple of days before release I managed to snag a beta key and downloaded the client. Installed OK and logged in and i was immediately disappointed. The interface was laggy even before getting into the game. Created a character with the limited options available and the game crashed. Tried again, got logged into the world and everything froze. After waiting 5mins i relogged and tried again and got aBlue screen of death....this went on for some time.
After eventually getting logged in I started walking about (I was actually trying to run but the lag made it stutter so badly) and doing the intro but after I got to the combat training section and spent 20mins trying to make sense of the combat system in horrendous lag I just /ragequit. Thank god I didnt preorder.
HOWEVER, all of these issues appear to be technical problems so I will come back in a couple of months and give it another go.....hopefully it will make a better showing because I was really looking forward to this game!

This. The game is not unfinished. There are some preformence issue with the server and client (I guess the engine, with overall is actually pretty good). There are some issues offcourse that need to be solved and soon (Duping items, being out of sync with one of the many servers, /unstucking and alt-f4 in PVP, etc ) else people will leave.
Things get better when you leave the populated beginners camp and venture out though and since I left there the only real bad problem I have had was the being out of sync thing and the fact the game thinks you still in a DMZ, meaning you can not unholster anywhere and have to kill youself (Meaning you have to reinsure your items again or lose them if you forgot about insuring them). Sometimes lag, but not as bad as before.
If you do not have the patience to sit though these problem then I suggest waiting a while and check the game out. Hopefully most of the problems are fixed by the time they introduce territorial warfare (Next month), I do however doubt that.
If you like a sandbox, this is a great game. Has it's bugs...right now its basically open for grinding only, but the games direction is awesome.
