I'm most likely going to play both, and they are very different games, fullfilling two different "needs. While I understand people who have never heard of the game xsyon, or just seen some screenshot 40 dollar15dollar seems much but for people who crave such a game I don't think its bad. It is after all a niche game.

You're forgetting the most important part. By all accounts, the game actually works. As in you can download it, install it and then (gasp!) play it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I was thoroughly enjoying my time in Rift. I started in beta 5, so just a couple weeks ago. I made it to level 32 and rolled a bunch of alts, making to 20 with a couple with this past beta. But recently the company began moving in a direction that i do not like, regarding open world pvp on pvp servers. No big deal, thousands of mmorpgs out there.
But then along comes Xsyon onto my radar. i am a sandboxer at heart (although I love me a good themepark as well, just not in the same game please!), at least when it's a real sandbox... which for me is all about freedom of character, mixed with displacement of earth to remove or build as I see fit, player driven economy and 'craftable everythings'. As well as a plethora of other things which I absolutely love about it.
So it looks like, for now, Xsyon will likely win out for me for the spring of 2011. I'll be keeping an eye on Rift though.
There are people out there who like both styles of gameplay, like myself, but there are people who like games like Rift who would never touch a game like Xsyon in their life, and vice versa.
Both games will do fine I bet. In their own ways and for completely different reasons. Xsyon will be a very tiny niche game with a solid community of like minded folks who love to shape their own "living" world. And Rift will appeal to to the masses with is familiar feel and high polish.
I do not think either one is sweating the other in any way, shape or form.
I understand that they cater to completely different audiences, but is this necessary? Do you predict any beneficial or detrimental effects on Xsyon?
i think it probably would only help xsyon.
many people aware of the big budget game will most likely hear about 'this other MMO' that launched at the same time.
and for the many (notice i didn't say all, or even majority) who haven't played in beta and that will be disappointed in Rift's sameyness, they have something new & truly different to defect to.
i think they'll benefit from Trion's marketing expenditures.

Isent the 40 dollars just to get into the pre-launch? When it releases i think it will just be 15 a month. Or i could be wrong. Does anyone know?
If i am not mistaken it is $40 to purchase the game. If you "prepurchase" it you get in on the prelaunch. Included in the $40 is 2 free months and after that it will be a monthly fee.
I'm just not a fan of the use it to improve it skill system in Xyson.
It usually results in macros to increase skills, or players just using a skill over and over to raise it, instead of using the most appropriate skill for the situation.
I said this about Darkfall before it released, and that turned out the be the case.
I know some like the use it to improve it skill system, but I dont' care for it.
If you just focus on 1 skill in this game you wont get far i can tell you :P You need different skills just to stay alive. Sure some will practise sertain skills more then others. Some will practise the leatherworking skill more and become leatherworkers. Some will become hunters and so on. Just like how it is IRL
Honestly Xsyon does interest me as I would rather play an MMO that feels like a living world with a strong player run economy, but I also want to take the safer and less riskier route with Rift. I have been avoiding all of the beta events in Rift because they seem to ruin the experience for me come launch day, however I have already pre-ordered it on Direct2drive for 40 dollars. Hell it could turn out to be another AoC or WAR but I feel it won't just shut down like APB did so I have that to comfort me.
While I do feel like I will be missing out on being a Pioneer of this new world Xsyon is bringing the rap sheet for indie MMO developers is just utter shit and thus I am going with Rift instead. I do wish the game success and maybe I will check it out at a later date while I am in the Rift/GW2 limbo.

IRL you don't have a "use it to improve it" skill system.
You use the most appropriate skill for the situaiton.
This never happens in real life.
you are in a fight. You can easily kill your attacker with your sword, because you are very skilled in sword swinging.
BUT! you'd like to increase your bow skill, so instead of killing your attacker quickly with your sword, you shoot it with arrows, because you need to increase your bow skill.
IRL, you'd use the most deadly weapon at your disposal, every time.
IRL, you would go to the archery range, and shoot to improve your skill, not practice in dangerous situaions. I don't wanna do that in a game.
Think about it. Policemen need to be able to handle a pistol. Do they practice by shooting bad guys?
The terraforming in Xyson is cool and all, but what will stop enemies from ruining your hard work at 3 am using the same terraforming skills? Can you hire guards or build towers that defend your buildings?
Also, have you all seen the combat in Xyson? It's pretty simple and almost comical.
I understand that they cater to completely different audiences, but is this necessary? Do you predict any beneficial or detrimental effects on Xsyon?
Considering Rift is set to take over the #2 spot in mmo marketshare, I don't think the proximity of their launches matters one bit. What the hell is Xyson?
Imhotepp i was refering to skills like leatherworking, fishing, gathering etc.. Not combat skills. And in what mmorpg do you not have to practise your combat skills in dangerous situations?
I haven't looked at Rift and probably won't. As for Xyson, I like sandboxes however Xyson has shitty graphics and sound and the combat which is ver important to me was laughable. From what I saw when two people fought it was like I was thrown back in time, back to when I was a young lad. I was watching someone playing the old Street Fighter game again, except this time the two combatants on my screen had only one combat move.
That was a while back and maybe things are looking alot better in Xyson by now, I just prefer sci fi with guns and hot women, so I'll stick with ER for now

Never heard of that game Xsyon. Cannot believe it costs 40$ and 15$ monthly, kind of a lot for what it looks like o . O.
What do you mean what it looks like lol? it looks freaking epic to me I dont think Rift can hold a candle to it in the orginality department or the crafting department for that matter.

The game is releasing way too early imo.
The combat system will be revamped they already said that from my research, and they are wanting to possibly try and do Mount and Blade style combat also there will be mounted combat.
I dont understand why everyone says Xsyon have shitty graphics. I dont think they are that bad. As for the combat it is bad at the moment i agree but the devs have said that they are going to do a major combat overhaul and the combat is going to be more like mount and blade combat.

What about the 3am raid problem? If there is nothing in place to safeguard your hard work while you're offline, that will be a huge problem. There needs to be NPC guards, or some kind of declaration of war required, something to give you a chance to defend your buildings. Having a huge guild with people up at all hours isn't feasible for everyone, there needs to be a system in place to provide protection to anyone.
I'm all for sieges and warfare between guilds, but if nothing is in place to prevent the ninja raids that will happen, it will kill the game.

Xsyon will be fine rift isnt gonna hurt its numbers at all . In all actuallity Xsyon's preorder headstart is feb 14 and rifts is feb 24th.
Rift will do ok for a bit and xsyon will do fine as well .

Just my 2 cents though
xsyon has been pushed back to the 18th for early start if you preorder the game.
