Soo...between our BEST MMOs, which has the funnest PvP? :D

maddi1040maddi1040 Member Posts: 6

Hiya guys! :D I have been trying lots of different games, new and old! :) I was wondering if you guys had any opinion on which of our MMO "greats" has the best PvP! Searching the forums, I've found the following names come up ALOT for having the best PvP:

Aion: Abyss/World PvP/Rift

WoW: Arena/Rated BGs/World PvP

Lineage 2: Castle Sieges/World PvP

Darkfall: City sieges/hardcore PvP/Mass PvP

WAR: RvR Lakes/BGs/World PvP

AoC: Fun PvP

So between these MMOs, can you please give me your opinion on their PvP? :) If we could keep out all the new MMOs like Rift and Guild Wars 2, that would be great. :) Thank you so much for your help!!

Aion: Any real PvP'ers quit Aion within the first 30 days. This game completely lacks PvP at all and is quite boring. Rifting is a guard camping fest and world PvP on your side is mostly ganks and greifing. The abyss is boring and there are so many issues with flight that PvP in it will never be balanced.

WoW: WoW is not a game I think of at all when it comes to PvP games. There has not been open world PvP in WoW since before BC was released, it died with the introduction of battle grounds. Arenas and rated BGs are all instanced and the same thing over and over. It has nothing to do with player vs player, its simply gear score vs gear score decides who wins.

Lineage 2: Never played it, but populations on EU and NA servers have been on the decline for many years. Might be worth a trial though as I believe they recently did server merges.

Darkfall: Darkfall actually has the type of PvP I love, so why then am I not playing it? There is so much other stuff wrong with this game, its  unplayable. The company who runs it are criminal. The skill grind is unbearable. Additionally, I played at launch when the population was highest and it was still a joke. They advertised 10,000 concurrent users per server, unfurtanetly they were incapable of supporting the technology to make this possible when they actually had 10,000 people wanting to play. Now the world is too big and there are not enough people. Be ready to spend most of your time alone grinding or running around and very little of it actually PvP'ing.

WAR: I enjoyed War for the first month and in beta. After that population dropped significantly and the game became a ghost town. Many server merges later it looks like they just dont care anymore. They will attempt to charge for server merges not done in a certain time frame, much like SoE did with SWG and got back lash for it. I did a 10 day reactivation trial  before it the game was alright, however one the 9th day they introduced all their paid account tweaks and what not. The game simply was not good enough for a monthly fee and a cash shop that sold mounts and levels. EA really wants it to die apparently and its working.

AoC: I've heard much has changed, but I've also heard much has stayed the same. I bought this game at launch, the CE as well. I was completely hyped up for it. Everything about the game sounded amazing. After 3 hours I called my CC provider and refused payment. It had all been a giant lie. I don't trust funcom and most likely never will again. If you are interested in  AoC, make sure you fnd a trial before you give these guys a dime.

If you are a true fan of quality PvP in MMO's, chances are you are still looking for that game to call home. Even if you've settled for something less atm, you most likely still have a void itching to be filled. Heres to hopes that something on the horizon can offer what so many others failed to do.

    Guild Wars

Stretegically choosing crusial skills for a fight is better ballance and more fun than having classes with 40 different skills all of which are supposed to be used in competitive pvp.

darkfall. nothing else gets my heart pounding, adrenaline coursing, hands sweating, nothing else gives the euphoria triumph.......im done

edit: i hate guild wars pvp. its just people who have bought all the skill packs and have all the op builds who button mash better than you. small scale and low level pvp was fun for me but other than that everybody else was always light years better because of what i mentioned. theres no room for casual pvpers

I agree with everything about the rest of the games. Yes, AoC had a horrible start. It has good end game pvp, but you won't see much of any pvp unless you're on a pvp server (before you're level 80). It's too top heavy nowadays for new gamers to get into it. Nothing for new accounts to do besides the same old level up grind. BUT the pvp is fun at level 80 with good pvp gear.

I dont see Starwars Galaxies (pre CU) on the list.......

This game had some of the best PvP out there

So I guess Darkfall is coming out to be the best! :) Is it true that Darkfall has the best PvP? :D

Good luck with button mashing in high level pvp. I have never bought a skill pack in my life but I still have most skills and items unlocked, and no I did not do a lot of pve to unlock those either. There is plenty of room for casual pvpers, just in Random Arenas and those pvp but not really pvp modes of Factions.

I picked Lineage 2 because I've never actually PVPed in it and the siege and world pvp sounded interesting.  Every other MMO that offers PVP just plain sucks.  Either due to inbalance, controls, being gated by leveling(aion) etc, none of them give me that PVP I enjoy when playing an FPS like CoD where its a fairly level playing field and just a blast of fun.  PVP should be that way or at least meaningful.

I am playing DaoC right now and so far had one PVP encounter but I haven't seen enough to make a decision on how fun or good it is.  Shame it's not in this list though.

Yes I would definitely say that it has the best PVP by far.

No other game in that list can make your hands shake, give you an adrenaline rush, or make your heart jump like Darkfall can. Like someone already mentioned the PVP is not that often because you have to bank and regear and replace what is broken or lost so you actually end up PVPing less than those other games because you really do not want to die usually but when I get into some epic 1vs1 or small-scale fight that lasts an hour or a siege that lasts several hours, there is really no other game that feels more fast-paced and keeps me at the edge of my seat where the winner takes all. They just cut the grind in half last week but its not the type of game where you log in and PVP nonstop even if you have been playing for years unless you are just going out in suicide gear all the time (which is fun as hell to do and you could make some huge scores and earn much more than you lose!).

Guildwars is a great side-game imo to Darkfall because its good to have an instant gratification game to fall-back on when you need some ego repaired because its easy in comparison along with no grind and no risk losing anything and I can log in and play a match which only takes 10 minutes (unless I am on a winning streak). Like someone already mentioned though it takes time to get familiar with the spells and the average player's age is like 10 years younger in this game so get ready to be called a noob no matter how long that you play and how good you get. I get called a noob almost everytime I play yet I win almost every match despite the team and have built a couple accounts with high PVP titles . .. . its like there are 75% 14 year olds or something?

I'd replace the word "criminal" with "completly imcompetent" and I'd pretty much agree with everything else you said about Darkfall.

Onto the subject raised by OP,

Amongst the MMOs listed in the poll, I voted for Guild Wars pre-Faction. It was pretty fun, no doubt about it. Getting a team of friends or guild mates, showing off great teamwork was definitively great. I wouldn't say GW has the best PvP, but most the of other MMOs have utterly "failed" to implement PvP right, or are just downright broken. As much as I may have enjoyed PvP in those games, I just can't get myself to vote for them, so it leaves Guild Wars as the winner in my book.

But if I had to name an MMO that's not in the list, I think I'd go with Dofus. I really enjoyed the turn-based combat and variety of playstyles. While there were some imbalances in PvP, tactics really made a significant difference, and good teamwork/placement was a major factor in a match's outcome.

My experiences with them were criminal.  My friend canceled his account, removed his billing information. He was charged for the game repeatedly after that. The charges were auto declined. Aventurine then banned his account and still kept on attempting to charge his CC. The only reason they were not able to is because his American CC auto declined European charges. This was a while ago, however even a few days ago, I still know guildies being charged for the game months after they've canceled their accounts and removed their billing information. This is infact criminal, whether due to incompetence or intentionaly.

The question is, what do you find fun in PvP.

I'd still say that EvE Online has one of the best PvP in MMO-history, but that oppinion doesn't stem from a gameplay-aspect but from the aspect of being meaningful in the grand scheme of the game itself.

Winning a war in EvE Online just feels so much more rewarding then in all those listed there, where it is totally uninteresting for the rest of the game who wins and who looses. DAoC was good PvP in that aspect aswell.

If I want "fun" PvP however, then I'm not playing a MMO actually, but a shooter.

Guild Wars and Warhammer were probably the two most enjoyable pvp games for me.

  • headenheaden Member UncommonPosts: 229

Until 1.4 WAR would have been my choice.  I wished they had 3 factions like DAOC, still it was fun for me until THAT patch turned it into a snoozefest.

darkfall. naval combat. sieges. Open field battles. fast paced. Fun

In Ultima Online,  we would lure people into our house and block them from leaving, so we could PK them.

There is a town in UO (wind) where you enter through a teleporter. we would surround the exit point with crates/chests. and from there PK them. (got a warning from a GM doing that)

Also running into Minoc flagged grey, waiting for someone to attack, and have them chase you out of town to PK them.

although one time, I was getting beat bad and I took off running (couldn't recall) and the guy chased me from Minoc to Yew.

Depends on if you want real PVP or fake PVP.

Real PVP means PVP is actually what the game is about (it's the most common activity), and it has a skillful focus.  Players actually fight players, rather than fights being one-sided slaughters:

    1. Planetside.  Nonstop, epically-massive PVP.  Lateral progression and balanced pop-caps means skill wins the day.

    2. Guild Wars.  Like Planetside, population and progression are kept tightly controlled, resulting in superb small-scale PVP.  Also helps that it has the most interesting ability design of any MMORPG on the market.

    3. WOW. Trails slightly, due to gear's influence on outcome.

    4. WAR.  Trails behind, due to shallow class/combat design, and a saddening focus on world PVP.

Fake PVP means PVP is usually very rare, and skill takes a backseat to zerging and progression elements.  Since fake PVP isn't really my thing, I won't bother ranking games here as others have already covered it.
