Well what can I say...?

It would be churlish of me to attack Trion (as I have done recently) for lacking scope, ambition, and imagination in their Rift game and not at least sample (what I consider) a game truer in concept to what I think a a MMORPG *should* be in 2011.

I have to say, good job. This game has all of that I mention above and tbh should be installing a deep sense of shame in massively funded devs like Trion to shame in what it's aiming for and achieving with it's true indie status and limited funding. I am honestly proud to have thrown down the money to try it, and in a months time (when i have satisfied my old school EQ cravings) I will definitely be playing it.

Nothing more to this post i guess then an outburst of gladness and cheer for what can be with a little customer/ community support. It is good now, and thats not even touching on what it CAN be.

Everyone that has whined and complained (as I have) about the state of modern MMORPGs owes it to themselves to at least give this title a second look, even if it isnt the focus of attention of the hype zerg right now. If this title dies rather then becoming another EVE I will firmly be convinced that it isnt the devs that have killed the MMORPG, but the players. The very ones that cry about it's degredation. And I will walk away, shanking my head, saying "well, y'know what? You get the games you deserve".

At last, a game where we build our world, define our adventures, and set our goals. Kudos Xsyon :D

Stupid of me to make a comment on first sight, but I just took a look at their website and the screenshots don't fill me with awe.

I know graphics aren't everything, but it looks a few years old already.

    Completely agree.

Just to add, Jooky and his team genuinely care what the community in a whole would like to see in-game. Often addressing concerns (a prime example this evening following the announcement of European servers), and adding valuable input to on-going discussions.

I have high hopes for this game, bringing something different to the genre deserves support.

    I made this mistake.

Upon visiting the website for the first time, I regrettably laughed and closed the browser. Upon further inspection, viewing up-to-date, high quality gameplay videos for example, I was blown away by the current features, overall polish and the graphics - they really aren't that bad AT ALL.

You could consider watching the tutorial vids by Saintbob on youtube:

If those don't grab you, then this game's probably not for you. There are plenty of others out there.

The videos show some great sandbox elements to the game. Ultimately though, I think a lot of people will be put off by the graphics.

Minecraft has similar great gameplay, but speaking for myself, the graphics just kills it.

If gameplay was everything though, we'd still be playing DAOC.

This game/video reminds me of Vanguard movie. Pretty creepy when I think about it. I do not see much people playing something feeling like 'I am the Legend' movie's atmosphere (almost in contrary to MMO). Definitelly only for niche players.

In my opinion the graphics are quite good at the highest detail-level.

I probably would have been more open minded to the OP if he didn't have to squeeze in insults about Trion and Rift. Xyson and Rift are two completely different styles of mmo, and aren't comparable. One is a sandbox, the other is story/quest driven.

I can play a game with less that great visuals, but this for me, nope, cant handle it, and its not even the engine that is the worst part, based on the videos and pictures I have the, the person or persons that designed and implemented the games environments need some SERIOUS training, they look simply awful. I could look past the below standard character models and detail, but the environment is TERRIBLE.

The graphics, I think, act as a good community filter for this game. People who prioritize graphics over the concept of this game would not enjoy this game.

Players who enjoy this game and its concept have commented often in these forums that they didn't even notice graphics or found them to be entirely adequate.

EDIT: That's why I'm always plugging Saintbob's videos ;) If people can't get beyond the graphics and see the concept, they won't be happy community members. It's better for them and the community if they spend their money elsewhere. It's a win-win.

    oh lord...

There really isnt any need to be personally offended by the fact that I compared this game's imagination, scope, and ambition to Rift's and personally found Trion's effort lacking. I didnt aim it at anyone to hurt them, I was just comparing my last two experiences in two new games. lets all stop trying to be so easily offended maybe, over a game no less. It's better we just talk about games- I am sure that me saying what i think won't hurt Rift's sales at all. I am sure Trion arnt 'insulted' by what I say... why would you be?

Maybe, but in my experience most of the good stuff in pretty much every media (movies, music, whatever) happens in the 'niche' sector.

Niche gaming is great... it's what happens when the masses look the other way, distracted by corperate shinies, and space is found by people with passion, vision, and imagination.

EQ, when it launched, was niche. Look at where we are now, for better or worse.

I completetly agree as well. I get that feeling constantly.

and the graphics, as brought up by others? Well, I think they are very ok... not steller, but decent enough, especially the amount of games with 'better' efforts I have seen come and the fall over.

I am definitley at the point where, for MMORPGs like this, gameplay owns gfx.

  • ianicusianicus Member UncommonPosts: 665

I see alot of chiming in on this thread about how gameplay should trump visuals. Im inclinded to agree and disagree. Honestly, with how easy it is to make something look half decent these days, there really isnt alot of excuses as to why there just seems to be such a lack of effort in the visuals dept in this game. I can forgive alot, however, the models in this game just looks plain sloppy, ive done a good deal better in maya myself (with no formal training) in a fairly short period.

You are just stating opinion about graphics though.  They look good to me.  That is MY opinion.  You of course have every right to yours, just like someone like me, who thinks the graphics are fine, has a right to theirs :)

I completely agree with OP.  I'm totally amazed witht his game.  I'm playing it asking myself a bunch of questions.  Why is this indie developer able to do things that AAA games don't do?

    Things like:

Aging, breeding mobs, volumetric clouds, seasons, moon cycle, dropping things on ground, falling trees, building anywhere, terraforming, etc....this list can go on and on.

The level of depth in this game makes every other game I know pale in comparison.

Vanguard is the only game out currently that has as nice of a sky but even Vanguard can't touch the feature set when it comes to everything the sky can do in Xyson.

Oh darn, here I am on long contract away from home, only with my macbook, and here, finally is a game I really truly want to play.

Love everything I have seen and read so far.

You said a lot. Now where does it say WHY you like Xyson so much or what you like about it. Try it without comparing it to any other game or game company. Tell me about THE GAME itself.

Or is it a virtual world simulator?

Pretend I've got $50 bucks and never played an mmo before.

  • SebaliSebali Member UncommonPosts: 395

I dunno. i looked at this bob guys vids(2 of them) the first one the guys swims the whoile time while talking. well the first 10 minutes or so anyway, the vid froze up tho the sound kept going.

the character also rubberbanded most of the way on its 30 foot trip into the water.

small little hiccups, yes, but hiccups non the less

once i saw the 2nd vid was more of the same as the first, i stopped watching.

the game has great concepts, yes but i just dont see it ever working out.

    kinda like communism

It amuses me that I have disagreed frequently with the OP on RIFT,{mod edit}  but I agree on Xsyon, and will happily play both. Trion have limited innovation but I enjoy big budget, rich and flashy mmos, for the eye candy, and simple fun, though I also love deep crafting and freedom.

Having said that I find many of the usual indie game glitches to be very irritating, they really need to work on polishing the progress and flow of crafting and gathering, and the interface feels very clunky at times. They need to learn from WURM, a game they are clearly influenced by, and include more of its features, mining, boat-building, defence towers, sleeping bonus, and increase find chances and make the drinking like tree felling, there is a lot of unnecessary tedium here.
