It's funny to see disgruntled players say "I hope this game fails!". I hope it succeeds, so it'll break the long string of failure's we've had this past couple years.
More to the point I wish MMO producers wouldn't overhype their games so that the most interest they get is at launch, instead of down the road because of word of mouth. Then we wouldn't have this reoccuring situation with server merges 6mos to a year down the road. And its silly because those server merges are completely understandable and in no way indicate the game is having a problem, but that is how it will be perceived, which just makes the situation worse.
I don't even remember how many servers they had after the first few weeks. But I think that was part of their problem. Expanding / cloning servers to a number that just made servers feel empty.
And yes, nothing better then people wishing a game to fail. Since a game doing well or failure has a very personal effect on you!

Good thing you can't blame Trion developers of this. The overwhelming majority of hype coming from this game is from the people and media who have played it.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
While I have no interest in this game, I still like to see successful launches and its good to see them starting small out the gate. FAR better to have to few servers and have to add more than to have to many ( like WAR ) and have to consolidate them.
States that the target server population is 1500. I'll assume that they plan for a 1/3 growth on each server if they are perfectly balanced based on pre-order sales numbers. Gives them aprox 30,000 preorders right now as long as that target server pop didn't change too much.
I'm still hoping for the best, strategically though they can play this, they've already shut out one optic that might have gone well for them. They could be lowballing the server numbers so on headstart and release they'll be able to have a huge boom in server numbers and get some confidence behind the product.
What they could have done is overshot their pre-order estimate and doubled or tripled the server numbers to effect the same idea that they have huge sales and help get people on the bus that maybe were sitting on the fence waiting to see if the game even left the ground. The biggest risk in this though is if they gamble and those servers don't fill out, they'd have to merge which will destroy confidence post release and make people think that the servers are being abandon in droves.
I'm sure their marketing department knows what they're doing, if I was in their position it would be a tough call. Everything in advertisement and media is smoke and mirrors these days.
30x1500 per server is 45,000. Figure 5-1 for accounts to logins and it looks like they are planning for something around 200-300k subs. Seems a little low to me.
I'm gonna bet the servers are overloaded with huge queues. I'm also gonna bet they add more servers after headstart and before release.
I think this is an excelent game that will see an excellent sales rate and good retention.

This is exactly what Mythic did with Warhammer and ABSOLUTELY a horrible idea if Trion wants a good launch with Rifts.
You could already predict population through Xfire. They had about 15000 hours logged a few days ago for the F2P period.
For reference, WoW has about 20 times that.
Now that the free period is over, there will be less. So it will be a 50k or so game the first week and then it will slow down.
The issue with this game is threefold:
*it doesn't offer anything new
*it costs a lot to play
*it doesn't run on mom and dad's computer
Eh you're TOTALLY wrong.
- The game will have MUCH more hours played, since people will give all they can. I only played ~5 hours in all 7 betas, since I want the fun at RELEASE. I have taken days off so I can play 128 hours in a row and then sleep - then play again! I bet a lot will do so.
*it doesn't run on mom and dad's computer
It does. I tried on my 4 year old LABTOP and it actually ran pretty decent on low/mid settings!
*it doesn't offer anything new
Does it now? What about rifts? Dynamic content/dungeons?
*it costs a lot to play
Not more than previously released MMOs. Actually its CHEAPER if you get founders subscription!
Not that I'm wishing anything on Rift but this game doesn't bring anything new, so I agree, server mergers will follow before the years end....but secretly I hope I'm wrong.
Only 1 german PvE Server is kinda meh. Every PvE-interested headstarter will start there. And because the headstart goes 1 week, no one wants to change the server when the game is going live. And headstarters usually have friends, which will follow to their server. That server will have a long login queue...
Is there actually so much German and French players, that they need their own server? I mean, I would think that they feel a bit deserted when compared to English servers since everybody else from EU area will be there.
I did not play Aion at release so cant say how bad queues were tho I heard it was pretty bad. But I prefer queueing to empty servers anytime so I hope they keep it sensible.
Amazing how many ppl want to see other ppl's fun fail. While its kind of likely for mergers to happen if we look at releases last couple of years, you can tell which ppl are being sincere and which are posting in spite. Kinda pathetic.

More then half will be low pop within 3 months. Any takers out there?
hopefully it won't end up like WAR

He who keeps his cool best wins.
Uhm thats the list of all the Beta servers!
These are not the official launch server names

Heck, I remember the AA beta - felt like a good group of folks. Went live, bunch of servers - felt EMPTY...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%

Warhammer fanatic since '85.
Ahh Wolfsbane is in. Great. Met some very nice people there, on both sides of the Bridge.
