Can be. Just pick a server that is not full. I didn't start playing until Friday night and there were still plenty of open servers with no queues. I haven't sat in a queue once.

This is false. This is incredibly false. There are people that are already on their third server, having rerolled again and again. There is definitely a queue issue.
People chose to roll on servers when the head start began. BAM - they became FULL. Trion added new servers. People that did not want to deal with the FULL servers moved. And then - BAM - they became FULL.
So now, during primetime, there are perhaps 4 NA servers that are not FULL. They are at MEDIUM or HIGH.
The regular launch takes place tomorrow. What is going to happen to those 4 servers? Yeah, they are going to go FULL pretty fast.
The queues during primetime run anywhere from 1 to 5 hours or longer. That is for anywhere from 200-400 or more. Some queues are up to a thousand.
Trion has attempted to address issues that were causing the high queue times (people could sit on the character select screen without being disconnected or they could autorun and not be disconnected). These allowed people to go to school, work, sleep, etc, etc, etc without having to wait in the queue again. Those have been addressed, however you are still facing that 1-5 hour queue (though it was often 8-10 or more before).
The game's popularity has surpassed what Trion expected. Heck, the game is already becoming plagued by Plat Sellers.
Add in the crashes and server restarts during the head start (cannot fault them here, would rather they did it during the head start than during the 30 days) - and you may find yourself sitting in queues more than you play.
If the game was not as fun as it is, I would have walked away not long after the head start began. But the game is fun, so I am on my third server... just do not know if I have a fourth or even a fifth in me.

What about the people (like me) who started on a Medium to Low Pop server, but now it's a Full pop server? There were no queues when the toons were created, but now there are? Why shouldn't those people complain? They can't play the characters they started.
I am on my fourth time through the level 1-20 content for the Defiants, trying to get a Cleric leveled, so that when we can actually transfer toons, my guild will be all on one server.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
If people are on their 3rd server, they must keep rerolling on the original servers.
I picked Harrow, the first of the new servers after the initial one. It is now full sometimes, but the que is not horrendous. I like having some kind of que at the beginning anyway so I know my server will remain strong.
Longest wait time is 15-20 minutes.
I don't believe any servers besides the original 10 or whatever are having que times of anything close to 4 hours.
Those servers were full an hour after headstart began, so it should've been obvious they would be overcrowded.
I didn't get to try to log in for the first time until an hour after the headstart launch. It still only took me 30 minutes to get into a server. Snarebrush, is where I'm at. Haven't had to wait in a queue since the second hour of headstart launch.
So far the worst was opening night, being a several hour queue...but since I've had on average 20-35 min ones during heavy playtimes (on Keenblade). Some servers are still a few hours long...which is to be expected with servers which large fan sites have chosen, etc...
Overall the server stability and their downtime / response is quite good, far better than my previous launch experiences. Kudos to Trion on a much cleaner release than expected.

The part in green definitely deserves attention (although it is a head start and not the launch yet). Through the beta events and this head start, Trion has done a superb job. I am glad that they are addressing additional issues during the head start rather than waiting weeks after release.

When did I ever say there aren't queues? I guess you answered whether or not you are on drugs with that. Lets look at some of my statements!
-I have NEVER seen more than 1/3 of the servers beeing full.
There are 39 servers. You are saying that you have never seen more than 13 as FULL. During primetime, there are generally only 4 that are not FULL.
-if you NEVER want to see a queue go on one of the 6 medium/low servers (the brand new ones that still don't go to high, I know that Perspice for example never goes over medium) and play there.
So if only 6 of the 39 servers are not FULL, how is that a third? You contradict yourself...
Note that I am on one of the most overpopulated servers in the game, and I'm fine with the queues because they are NOTHING compared to those of some other games. Most likely there will be more servers released tommorow due to the actual release, we might actually see around 90 servers by the end of the week.
Anyway go check out Perspice tonight, I'm betting it doesn't go past medium just like it hasn't for the past 2 days. Who knows perhaps it will even go high tommorow with the release, but I highly doubt that it will be full, especially with new servers coming in.
I'm already on my third server (technically fourth, but I do not count the first since I only managed to get names on there - never actually played) - do not need a suggestion for a fourth server... thanks though.

Keep in mind it will be busier on the weekends. You may wish to wait (or not) a few days or weeks to allow server queues to settle if is going to be a problem for you and adversely affect what you think of the game.

The problem is that there seem to be a big number of servers opened to counter the flood.
The same 1500 people per server limits were exactly the same for WAR.
WAR had to open 113 servers to accomodate the (later confirmed) 800K players. A mere 7K subscriptions per server...
Rift is already through half that number with queues still in.
Both games use the same engine. No coincidence.
The problem with such low pops per server is that at launch they fill up incredibly fast but ... the moment these pops drop they drop all over the total number of servers. hence going very quickly from low to full and vice versa.
In fact this low number of people per server count contributed to the fast regression of WAR after 1-2 months.
WAR made another error: dividing these pops even further with 4 different Tiers and having no cross server BG's. Rift makers didn't fall into this trap, hence a small world and cross server BG's to counter the handicap.
We'll watch these servers in the following 6 - 8 weeks and everyone will conclude: but my guess is it certainly is the end of single server based realms.

Another troll, if you bothered to read the previous discussion the 1500 server limit applied only to beta servers. As for engine yes it also uses Gamebyro, but it can be customized by the devoloper. Unlike WAR it ran pretty smoothly without any hiccups when there are large of number players.

They believed that when the game was out of headstart the population will double, they failed to realize that most of players who wanted to play the game already were in heady start. The exact same discussions were held by the WAR fans at launch. Everyone was talking about numbers out of their asses. The fact remains that the lead designer of Rift in Dec himself stated 1.5 K per server TARGET.
As to WAR (same engine btw) : many discussions later the same WAR numbers were confirmed by simply comparing the actual number of servers in their first month and their maxed number of subs: 800K for 113 servers. Clearly showing a limited number of 7K subs per server.
WAR had queuing of HOURS in the first 5 days and hence they had to open servers @ 1500/server. The exact same thing happens now.
The fact you see servers going very fast from low - med to full and vice versa every night ...shows the same problem occuring with Rift.

That's why I always said thatsingle realm based servers are a dying breed because these pops are simply uncontrollable at launch and later on when people leave.

Not since World of Warcraft release have I seen such a positive launch of a new MMO.
Been playing in Beta's and now head start and I can't wait to get my friends here from WoW and figure out what server we are gonna play on for real. Got to be a PvP server and the challenge is gonna be to get my old and real life friends from WoW (PvE) players to all roll on a PvP server in RIFT. PvP in RIFT is gonna be like a whole new kind I am thinkin. This game has amazing potential if Trion doesn't screw the pooch!

I think this is the primary reason we saw so few servers on release date. Everyone thought it
was extremely odd that they consolidated so much from Beta 7, especially on the Euro servers.
My theory is the number of Gamestop 5$ headstart keys was far greater then what was actually
reported to Trion. They obviously have some strategy in place to avoid what has happened to

A major up-coming AAA MMO title that has had an open Beta for the past few weeks is going to have quite a massive population for the first month or so. Once again the engine implement in Rifts is far different than WAR (which used modified variant of DAoC game byro engine where as Rifts uses later version), if you played the game you would know.

So Community manager Cindy tried to counter the technical talk of the lead game designer of Rift.
I believe the technical info of the lead designer instead of ... Cindy as Rift uses the exact same engine as War did.
Also the signs of filled up severs and these servers going from high to low and vice versa in a few minutes time simply confirms the limited number of people per server.

As to WAR (same engine btw) : many discussions later the same WAR numbers were confirmed by simply comparing the actual number of servers in their first month and their maxed number of subs: 800K for 113 servers. Clearly showing a limited number of 7K subs per server.
WAR had queuing of HOURS in the first 5 days and hence they had to open servers @ 1500/server. The exact same thing happens now.
The fact you see servers going very fast from low - med to full and vice versa every night ...shows the same problem occuring with Rift.
See for your self.
That's why I always said thatsingle realm based servers are a dying breed because these pops are simply uncontrollable at launch and later on when people leave.

Last day of Headstart and the queue's have pretty much gone away (depending on which ot the 30 servers you roll on).
BUT: If Trion doesn't add more dervers by tommorrow (Launch Day) It is gonna be a nightmare.
Not since World of Warcraft release have I seen such a positive launch of a new MMO.
Been playing in Beta's and now head start and I can't wait to get my friends here from WoW and figure out what server we are gonna play on for real. Got to be a PvP server and the challenge is gonna be to get my old and real life friends from WoW (PvE) players to all roll on a PvP server in RIFT. PvP in RIFT is gonna be like a whole new kind I am thinkin. This game has amazing potential if Trion doesn't screw the pooch!
Blizzard better be afraid.
This could actually turn out to be the fated WoW killer after all. Who the hell knows.?

I think this is the primary reason we saw so few servers on release date. Everyone thought it
was extremely odd that they consolidated so much from Beta 7, especially on the Euro servers.
My theory is the number of Gamestop 5$ headstart keys was far greater then what was actually
reported to Trion. They obviously have some strategy in place to avoid what has happened to
so many new release MMO's.
It is unfortunate that on some servers the queue lines can become quite large, however this is to be expected. A major up-coming AAA MMO title that has had an open Beta for the past few weeks is going to have quite a massive population for the first month or so. It can be extremely frustrating however there are only so many different things Trion can do to help this problem without seriously placing the future of the game in jeopardy.
Once again the engine implement in Rifts is far different than WAR (which used modified variant of DAoC game byro engine where as Rifts uses later version), if you played the game you would know.

At 1500 people per server, they still need 50 more servers to come to WAR number of players.
The fact the servers fill fast and go to lower levels within hours each day shows the limits of their servers. Nothing more.

So Community manager Cindy tried to counter the technical talk of the lead game designer of Rift.

I believe the technical info of the lead designer instead of ... Cindy as Rift uses the exact same engine as War did.
Also the signs of filled up severs and these servers going from high to low and vice versa in a few minutes time simply confirms the limited number of people per server.

Can each shard only hold 1500 players?
I keep seeing references to a dev saying that each sever would only hold 1500 people. The actual quote was from a very old IRC chat where one of our devs was talking about numbers for that current beta as the servers were opened. We do not release specific numbers about our servers. But we saw higher numbers with each beta and the same thing applies to release. The 1500 rumor is false.
I am pretty sure the thread where the American CM specifically calls 1.5k false should be
good enough for most people.
I am estimating upwards in the 5-7k range that these servers can hold. We will not know until
after March 1st.
