The awsome Potential of the Rifts

robert4818robert4818 Member UncommonPosts: 661

I'm enjoying rift quite well.

What has me intrigued is the dynamic quality that the rifts add to the game.

However what has me truly thrilled is the level of potential that the rifts actually have.

Right now, the rifts are rather generic and samey.  They are fun, but I look at what can eventually tweaked with the rifts down the road and it has me truly excited.

There are a number f new "rift scenarios" that can easily be added, at all sorts of level ranges.  Then when a rift starts (say near meridian) then the computer chooses a random rift scenario instead of one of the current ones and boom! simple easy content additions.

It would not surprise me if, down the line, the rifts, and rift hunting overshadows most all the other PVE aspects of the game.  The dynamic effect it can have on the world has me very excited.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

While I enjoy the rifts. Leave PvE alone, thank you very much...

I would have to agree with the OP, mostly because of how willing Trion is to just put stuff in the game. Their whole architecture is built to do that type of dynamic addition to the game.

I'd like to see a rift where the tentacles in the sky attack you and you have to attack them back. Not very dynamic compared to the mobs, but I think it would be kind of cool.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

The Rifts start to get more complicated around Scarwood around level 30. Today I had a Death and it had like a side boss leech thing that popped out randomly and attacked party members and sent adds. A life Rift spawned with cacoons and the spider boss would rush to them and unleash spider adds.

They are experimenting with the Rifts. One rift in Silvermoon spawns KEGS that you can drink and then it spawns a boss who is mad you are so drunk. yeah it is getting fun

Agreed. A few people are saying they are bored with them already. Not me. Coupled with invasions and with the variation in how many are there to fight its an engaging form of PvE already. Vastly better than the ho hum questing that dominated MMOs these days.

OP is correct though, huge potential here for Trion to build on what they have already acheived.

It did seem to me that they where very...samey for quite a few levels (though this was in beta).  I think they can easily mix things up a bit more in the earlier levels to keep rifts really fresh and interesting rather than just dps races.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Here is the thing, rifts as they are now are trying to change a generally static in nature world. What you call as PvE right now basically.

What is going to be interesting is when the players via the rift system, starting to make changes into the world that they fight to keep. Basicaly the opposite of what is happening now. Right now people are trying to keep the world as is. it would be cool if say, there was a city building process that involved the rift technology and the city gained ground when the players fought the rift creatures and so on ...

I'm getting way ahead of myself. Lets just enjoy the game for what it is for now ;)

Just finished a major invasion event in Scarwood Reach. It was spectacular. The event had my group defending some life rift type thing against spawned invasion mobs and other groups in the zone had to deactivate life generators ( don't remember name) throughout the zone while we did this. After this phase we had to destroy some more life type wardstone-esque things. Anyway, the final part was awesome. There were 3 huge life elemental bosses that spawned with a massive amount of health that we had to kill. Everybody in the zone seemed to have shown up, including guardians (I was among the defiant). After the bosses went down, it turned into a giant world pvp battle. Defiant won of course. :) Good times, and lots and lots of planarite and loot was obtained.

The Rifts and War invasions add some spice. They are a concept that you could see in any MMO, but they could not replace questing. It would be hard to introduce story content into them without GM supervision. Currently you hear some amazingly loud voices from Regulos' top boys telling you they are going to take over, it would be difficult to deliver much more story than that.

Also questing involves story in static locations, which is where people live their lives. Not on the move, so that does not play to dynamic events. Unless we were in Gypsy Online or something. :)

I think for many what they like about these dynamic events is the opportuntity to partake in some grouping which is as easy as click a button. Welcome to dynamic grouping guys.

I found them really underwhelming myself but they definitely have a ton of potential.

Right now (still lvl 15-ish) I would definitely agree with you.

However, the point of this post is not that the current rift and rift events are great.  Its that their nature of 'randomly spawning' content makes them a very heavy potential for adding to the game.  They are a major selling point to  the game, so I would be VERY disappointed if they don't make additions to the scenario's and instead add only to the other parts of the game.

    Potential scenario's i see spawning:

A scenario very akin to the old game Gauntlet (continuous adds until someone kills the spawn pit).

    "Enter the rift" random Dungeons.

Very Large rifts that create a maze you have to find your way through.

"moving" rifts that drift across the land.

Rifts that make Friendly places into dungeons.  (For example a major rift occuring in Meridian, Meridian is now a dungeon that must be cleared in order to close the rift.)

Another thing, as someone else said, if you allow some form of player made conent (such as cities that can later be destroyed) then the rifts add an awsome potential for destroying/taking over those things players have worked to create.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Anyone thinking we might be able to enter Rifts at some point?  Like an expansion(s) that open up the realm of fire/death/life/water etc. and it's a whole world to explore.  Taking the fight to the enemy per se.  I can see it.  Sounds good to me ;D

I was under the impression that that was part of the end game content.

Oh.  Could be, I'm only level 35 and just having a blast.  I've even gone back to earlier zone for achievements and exploring and you get nice rewards for even low level stuff that you can use at any level.  Very fun.

It is interesting to see that Rift scores a lot more hits in mmorpg.com than the much hyped Star Wars old republic, unless you go back a year when no one had heard about Rift.

Trion as not as big as Bioware or Lucas Art.

The world of Rift is not as well known as the Star Wars universe.

But when you make a game this good it doesn´t have to be.

Star wars TOR will suffer from player disenfranchisement that it isn't the new iteration of SWG even though its been made perfectly clear that this is NOT the path the game is taking.

It's called Flavor of the Month. This is going to happen all over again when the next big MMO is nearing release.

@Trowar: it just launched, what did you expect?

Rift also outscores WoW, LotrO and GW2 in the number of hits besides SWTOR, just fyi, and GW2 has a lot higher hype going for it than SWTOR.

I am talking about the latest 6 MONTHS.

The latest few weeks also count towards those 6 months. Rift has just been talked about a lot more than any of those other games in a while.

Again, Rift was/is the closest to launch, so no surprise; it even outscored GW2 in hits which had a much higher hype score for the last 6 months than Rift had.

If that isn't telling something that launch has an effect on hit count, then I don't know what will.

edit: I find more surprising the unexpected EQ2 that high on the list.
