1. no on mentioned why neverwinter nights 1 was so good.
the campaigns were horrible, to me(and many others) they were just a demo of what the toolset can do.
there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE vault of insanely well written stories. not only well, but a lot of them are actually much longer than all official campaigns combined.
2. gothic 1, it has small world, it has horrible graphics, good humor, good story and its cozy. one of my favorite games of all time for sure. gothic 2 is good as well, even tho it lacks something gothic 1 had. and the series end there since i dont consider gothic 3 or arcania to be part of it haha.
3. witcher... id say it was a bit of a letdown after reading most of the books. the swordfighting wasnt interesting at all, however what it does deliver is the same type of storytelling. ofcourse its a bit softened.... tbh i liked the books much more. a high quality well written story without all the heroic bullshit that im so fed up with from countless fantasy stories..... yes that includes lotro. witcher is about what would a fantasy world really be. everything is down to the ground, with all its shit, politics, racism and so on.
4. oblivion, yes it has a weak story, but i think that its only worth throwing the game down if youve finished the only thing worth finishing in that game - dark brotherhood. great pack of quests, especially if you dont rush them.
5. fallout new vegas. its fun, lots of random bullcrap in the game and the game doesnt radiate depressive emptyness like fallout 3. surely its not fallout 1-2, but damn- new vegas is one of those few games i finished really fast, because it was really fun.
6. vampire the masquarade redemption. someone mentioned it was really bad game. it was not, its pretty standart dungeon crawler with nice atmosphere. not for those who want extremely good story tho. somehow its one of my all times favorites as well.
7. vampire the masquerade bloodlines - hell yes!
8. kotor 1-2.
anyway ill mention a few games that arent rpgs, but i think might help to kill the boringdom with their epic stories.
fahrenheit (indigo prophecy) - one of the most hooking stories ever.
amnesia - a lot of people tend to focus on its scary side, yet ignore all the written text there. its damn good game.
legacy of kain series - it looks like random third person hack and slash game... what people dont realise is that it has one of the most twisted, mindfucking storylines ever written. however its quite difficult to grasp the story since its in... blood omen 1 (1997), soul reaver (1999), soul reaver 2 (2001), defiance (2003) (i dont count blood omen 2 since its horrible game and it doesnt connect with a story at all). whats the problem with that? first game is like diablo 1, while others are third person 3d games, whats worse is that you have to get through somewhat repetitive and frustrating combat sometimes to progress in the story. aaaanyway... probably the most dilematic game series ever made. someone should write a book or make a short tv series.
machinarium - little puzzle game. really good though.
I see many mentions of Divinity 2; the only game in the series I have yet to play.
Can I chime in and recommend the first two installments?
Divine Divinity - is an amazing game with a great storyline and brilliant ARPG combat.
Beyond Divinity - might be quite buggy but was a spectacular sequal to Divine Divinity.
I'd recommend them to anyone.
Also; the entire Fallout series (ok, you can miss out fallout: tactics if you want!)
- New Vegas - Has a lot better storyline, in my view, than Fallout 3 (if you can compare them) but is filled to the brim with bugs; I could barely use VATs as it was constantly bugging out... Also make sure Ed-E never carries any food!
In additio to Fallout; you might want to try out some of the games below - most can be found on Steam or GoG;
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader
Dark Star 1 - Might be a space simulation rather than a RPG, but it was a pretty fun, if not particularly deep game.
Dungeon Siege 1 + 2
Titan Quest
Torchlight
The list goes on and on; but I am sure I would just be repeating previous posts; DA:O, ME 1+2 and KOTOR 1+2 are all must plays imo.
Bioware do make awesome solo RPGs, if you like the following
- Fully voiced stories with multiple endings.
- interactive characters that play along side you (talk to them, romances, or some times even kill :O).
- Multiple paths between good and evil choice making that can range from small to large changes in the plot.
- Twich based combat for Mass Effect 1&2, button bashing for Jade empire, and more a MMO feel for Kotor and DA:origns.
- Customisation, i.e - from characters gender, face, stats and class to weps and armor.
I didnt see anyone mention Knights of the Old Republic (Kotor) though i didnt read all the posts, so i take it back if someone did. The graphics havent aged well, but they stories are just as glorious now as they were back in 04.
It might be an old game, but with PC mods, there still quite entertaining, and if you like the Starwars licience, it was voted best starwars game ever :P
Dragons Age: Origins plays more like a MMO and has the most choices from different starter stories for the different races, to various 4 different endings, however, other games like Mass Effect have more cinematic endings compared to DA:O but thats because theres too many variations to the story that a CGI ending wouldnt be able to fit everything in.
Jade Empire was the least interesting, the combat is more for consoles and it felt rather short compared to Mass Effect, DA:O and Kotor.
Mass Effect has a great story, if ya love a bit of pew pew and sci fi, you'll love it, however. It doesnt have the replay value of the other games, due to being only male or female char, both saying the same voiced script, also with really 2 endings as such, whereas in DA:O theres more variation.
You could even hold off for SW:TOR to come out, (if you like starwars).
Although it is a MMO, it can be played like a solo game, which features decision making and fully voiced stories, but its not out till mid year ish.
MMO feel in DA:O ? Have you played another version ive missed something or what?
Small maps, follow path with in all towns lifeless or limted npcs standing still or saying few words, almost no exploring just forced path leading towards a boss fight.
Dragon age is solo rpg witha bitch morrigan or whiner allistar or boring wyne.
Second installment is even worse pure console plus very bad grafhics and almost no freedom at all but with alot of action that console players love.
DA2 is game not worth installed on my HD.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Why not go to Gog.com and look for some of the classic rpgs of all time like Fallout, Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment?
All games there run with any Windows, be it Xp, Vista or Win7 and have the latest patch and sometimes even mods and each one is a cheap deal.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
What are some good rpgs for the pc within the last 10-11 years or so that had a good story? Sandboxes like oblivion etc are out because their stories tend to blow. Doesn't have to be a pure rpg, it can be rpg-like as well.
super nintendo / GBA emulators and play golden sun 1 and 2, final fantasy 1, 2, 3 and 4
sorry i cant recommend pc rpgs... i really dont like RPGs for computer, they just dont entertain me. For me if its not mmorpg, fps, things like that then its classic console rpgs through emulators...

(in no particular order)
Mass Effect
Dragon Age
GTA IV
Knights of the Old Republic (and the lesser but still great KOTOR II)
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout 3
not sure if all of these are available for PC, but they are all worth playing
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
the witcher: enhanced edition is fucking awesome. that is one of a few games that i've played through more than 3 times. the world layouts are pretty linear but the storyline more than makes up for it. also, you can make choices that'll effect the game. many of those choices have long term consequences. most of them won't become apparent until near the end of the game, or after. i'm still amazed by how the choices turn out each time i go through the game.
the witcher 2 is coming soon. i cannot wait to get my hands on it!
OT: Dragonage was good both Mass Effects were well done as well. Knights of the old republic 1 and 2 were sweet. If you are going to reach way back Planes Scape Torment or the original Fallout. Quite a bit to choose from just depends on your tastes fantasy, scifi, starwars, post apoc...Happy gaming when you choose one.
honestly if you are looking for good story then forget completely all new BioWare games. It has RPG elements but story is just shallow rubbish for us, older gamers.
you require games from 2001 till now so.. hard to find RPG with good story. I can write a personal list but RPG elements miss in some games:
1. Max Payne 2 - the best story I´ve seen in games
2. The bards tale - most humorous game I´ve ever played
3. Vampire masquarade bloodlines - always loved vampire topic so it´s must have
4. Metal Gear Solid - the first game
5. Final Fantasy VII - the best text game ever made
and I have only one game from the new ones that has RPG elements and really adult, breath taking and bitter story based on real life: The Witcher ( for you US citizens I mean uncensored version like the one here in Europe ). It´s the best choice of all RPG games that are on the market right now.
Mass effect is terible rpg its all about action and story thats all.
Bioware games are mediocre if you want a good rpg try Bethesda games:)
Divinity 2 also great
Risen
Drakensang
Witcher
Two worlds
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

All Bioware games have a good story.
While I enjoy the Elder series, do NOT play them if you enjoy a good story.
Comparing DA:O to Elder4 from a story perspective is just so one sided towards DA:O it is not even funny.
Only play Two Worlds if you can put up with the horrendous plot/voice/char/UI known to man. Two worlds original is your 'so bad it is good' movie while Two Worlds2 is your 'fairly good with some crazy stuff but still bad UI/char'.
Gdemami - Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
Vampire: The Maquerade is quite funky one, bit more "realistic" look into vampire folklore in dark, highly modern, and at times glamourful setting. Plays like a console game though. A good game doesn't get worse than it, and bad game doesn't get better than it. In any case RPG freaks, more or less, love it.
Do not leave out Morrowind, the differences between Morrowind and Oblivion are night and day, the only thing both of them share in common is that single MMORPG feel, and that is it. Morrowind has SO many good stories that its like playing 5 Bioware rpgs at one time. Trust me you will not regret it,, will someone please tell him just some of the stories dealing with the Morag Tong (sp?). which is NOT even the main story (which imo is one of the greatest rpg stories of all time, just as good as Planescape Torment). Dont sleep on Morrowind, there is so much good story in there that you could still be finding new stuff about it 3 years later.
And dont get me started on all the damn books that can be read
Anyone who says that Morrowind doesnt have good stories has not played long enough and is lying to you. Again do not confuse Morrowind with Oblivion. Apples and Garbage
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

The Temple of Elemental Evil is arguably the most faithful representation of the then-current rules of Dungeon and Dragons(3.5) in a computer game.
A must have game if you like RPG
fallout 1,2 ( 3 is mark rip off - morrowind with guns)
baldurs gate
neverwinter nights 1,2
Venetica
Eschalon Book 1 & 2
Planescape Torment (great humor)
Risen

Think Juggernaut or Fragoria are really good free rpg games
