So after reading the patch notes on mmo-champion i decided to once and for all delete the wow folder in my c drive. I don’t like what blizzard is doing and I don’t like that i only log only to attempt a raid. The game feels like Chill in org/wait for something to pop/do the popped bg or instance/go back to stage one until someone starts a group to do something.
I went onto rift and loved the polish and the feel. I got to level 20 really fast but sadly I was then bored. I thought to myself how could this be? This game is what i wanted. A polished mmo by a company who can patch bugs. The game is fun and looks great and has content and things to do at all times. Before this I played Aion and Warhammer before that. I soon realized why I was so bored.
I got in the cycle of go to quest hub, do all quests there, go to next hub and rinse and repeat. Break up the cycle with a few bg/warfront/sc or whatever and even more by doing a dungeon. While going along this cycle i would bind my 5 most powerful attacks to 1-5 and the C/F/X/Z keys and would mash them in a certain order.
I come to this forum a lot looking for games that I have played before but now I want something completely different. Something where I am not mashing 1-5 in a certain order to achieve top dps. Something where I am not at a quest hub and then have to look forwards to the next quest hub. Something where I get to play with other people instead of soloing instanced content(Wow cata).
I have looked up some games(I am willing to pay up to 40 dollars for the game and its monthly fee).
I see there is
Vanguard: It looks like it focuses heavily on exploring and doing lots of group stuff, but it is also SOE so I don’t trust them that much
Dark Fall: It looks really different but I hear there is a very bad community to it.
And that is all i could find. I know it sounds small but that is all I could find on xfire or other sites.
So in short or TL;DR What are games that you really like that PLAY nothing like wow/rift/aion/war/lotro?
Comments
Guild Wars
Eve would be the obvious one
Also anarchy online or neocron 2
Black prophecy just went into ob in the eu with the na beta coming soon
The one based on the old pirates game could be worth a look(bounty bay/voyage century, uncharted waters etc.)
Planeshift could be worth checking into too
I f you want something completely different, try Xsyon.
Well i would say Darkfall, and if you get in awith a good group of people its a blast to play. I left because of the city seiges not working correctly along time ago.
Then for something totaly different try wurm online? if you like Wurm online then you definately need to look at xyson. just i prefer a sandbox over a themepark. But at least wurm is free to play just dont look for anything great in the graphics department. But you will never have to worry about being at a quest hub, there are not any.
played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek
and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.
Darkfall has a great community. There are the obvious bad eggs but thats in every game.
It is 10$ to buy right now and 25$ for a 3 months subscription. The company is running a limited time special.
It is the obvious choice.
EDIT:
Xsyon is extremely buggy and not even really launched yet. I would wait 6 months to let it develop more before trying it. Darkfall is definatly what you should be playing. Great game.

FFXI is the only one I play that completely goes against the quest hub to quest hub experience. It is however a grinder, which I didn't think I would like but I love it. FFXI seems to be one of the few MMO's (maybe the only? idk) that embrace complexity and mystery. If you haven't already checked it out, you should. Word of warning, it takes some getting used to, which turns a lot of people off right away.
Wow 8 minutes and a lot of answer.
Thanks
So in regards to Darkfall-Is it easy for a new person to get into? How would i go about joining a clan or guild? Have not played the game yet. I tried to download the demo a month ago but for some reason it refused to download past a certain point. Will the darkfall wiki/faq answer most of the gameplay based questions?
I tried to get into FFXI but it said I needed to file for a certain protection plan on my credit card. That is what scared me off. Or did they change that?
I also like the comment about one game being not finished yet. All of the games recommended have been patched right?
Also about eve. I sadly could not get into the game for some reason
Any other ideas on games?
EvE, Mortal Online, and Xsyon would be good games to look into, as they seem to fit what you're looking for.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Fallen Earth is pretty unique...
Since your asking for other ideas, thats another one you may want to look into.
Darkfall (magefall) is a HUGE grind fest and has no skillcap. It was fun for a bit, but just blah.
I would recommend Xsyon, it's the best sandbox out at the moment. Launch was delayed due to bugs, but the dev's seem to listen to the community and actually care about the game. There's a great community and the game is very group oriented. Check out some videos on youtube before taking the dive of course, but it's definately worth a look imo.
Hope you find something you enjoy.
Later.
"Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome."
If you're stuck on fantasy themes, Guild Wars. I HATE fantasy, but guild wars is the only one I can tolerate because of how the game works. Don't listen to the instance haters, You're always connected to the community if you're in a guild and alliance and theres always people looking teams and there is no end game because ts all about developing your tactics and skill use as a person. Theres endless amounts of content and items to get and goals to reach (especially for unlocking guild wars 2 stuff).
If you're willing to step out of the over used fantasy setting, go for City of Heroes/Villains. The best character customization in any mmo (second only to Second Life which isnt even a game, just a virtual world with real life economy). And theres literally endless content because players can create their own missions and enemies and stuff. Not to mention the thousands of mission (quests) provided by the devs which go along with some interesting stories (which arent needed to do each mission, but still a nice bonus if you're into that).
Theres some other games that seem different like DC Universe. I havent tried that yet, but hear the complaints. I think these complaints are coming from people that only played WoW. The problem with that, is that WoW is a dumbed down version of every generic mmo before it. But since its most of its player's first MMO, thats their standard.
I myself find myself waiting for Guild Wars 2 and some of the next gen korean MMOs, but really only Guild Wars 2. I'm mainly hoping to get a decent PC again so that I can play non-mmo games, because those are honestly much more fun. After playing MMOs for about 11+ years has made me realize how un-fun most of them are. Collecting pretend items and doing non-fun things to get something I can't do anything with etc.
I'll put a plug in for Fallen Earth. You can't get much different from the "traditional" fantasy RPG setting than FE. Templates are completely customizable to you, there are swords and knives but also sawed-off shotguns and sniper rifles. The graphics are great. You can ride a horse or drive a dune buggy. The combat is FPS twitch, but requires a ton of strategy as well. All in all, if you are looking for an MMO with a completely different "feel" than the competition........Fallen Earth fits the bill.
There are still quest hubs, and a few borderline mundane questlines, but all in all they are decent quests. The main storyline will keep you interested.
Free Trial, give it a shot.
The Battlestar Galaxtica Browser MMO is a nice casual game.
A Tale in the Desert is a fully focused on building and has no fighting at all.
EarthRise is a fun game, but kinda boring at the moment (Would recommand looking at the in about 2 months).
Darkfall, liked the game for a while, but also quickly became boring, might be worth checking out though. There should still be a trail.
Wurms Online is a game where building and combat is mixed well, although you do not have to become a fighter to enjoy the game. Depending on how you play the game you can have a grind. If you want to be able to make the best weapons you will have to grind. If however you set you goal one creating your own farm and tending it it does not have to be.
Xsyon have not played this game is a good while as I am waiting for it to be release. I pre-ordered over a year ago (Was one of the first) and am looking forward to it. The game resolves mainly around building, but there is combat. I believe they will or have implemented a system where you can take on quest created by humans using a tribes totum. I guess the quest will consist of collection quest and maybe kill quests? I am really impressed what such a small team has done and looking forward to seeing how the game looks in 2 years. I predict it will be going strong and might have a bigger development team working on it.

Plenty of game to look forward to as well. End of Nation, Guild Wars 2, Salam (sp?), etc.
^
Plus it has a 30 day trial right now
All Points Bulletin (APB) is your game, no button mashing. Its in closed beta right now. but you can try for a beta spot... http://www.gamersfirst.com/apb/
One I haven't seen mentioned yet is DDO (D&D Online). It is action-based combat rather than the typical "hot-key wait on cooldowns" combat most MMO's use.
There are really also no fetch, carry, deliver, "kill 10 rats" quests since each quest in DDO is an entire instance for you and your group alone to complete a specific objective with Dungeon Master narration at key points explaining important events or objective updates. Actual traps and puzzles are thrown in to add an extra element of excitement and strategical thinking.
Each quest also has a difficulty setting and can be repeated so you can solo the easier modes if you're short on time or don't feel like grouping or you can run through the quest on harder modes for group play with better rewards (which everyone gets their own loot assigned to them so you ALWAYS come out with something and no risk of ninja-looters). Quests also range in time (shown at the quest entrance) from short 5-10 minute quests all the way up to hour-or-longer quests so you really can choose what is best for the time you have.
Drawbacks though are that there really is no PvP (that's a plus to many players), not much in the way of crafting, and there is no open world. Like Guild Wars or Vindictus this is a heavily instanced game. Many people prefer that though as it means you can form a group, get in and get out and do another quest immediately after without those long 15 minute travel/gathering times that many other mmo's have.
It IS a hybrid game (has both free-play or subscription depending on the options you want) so you can check it out for free with no risk. If you truly are bored with the usual WoW/EQ/Etc model than DDO is definitely worth a try.
I think for darkfall trial you may also need a direct to drive or gamershell account to complete the download
I hear what you're saying, OP. I played Rift in beta as well, and although I found it to be extremely polished, I realized that I just can't enjoy MMOs like that any longer. I've done them to death. The only one that I still go back to is LOTRO, simply because the atmosphere, casual gameplay, and great community continue to be a pleasant experience.
I've installed EVE recently and I'm having a really good time. It's very refreshing. Definitely worth downloading and playing the 14 day trial, although I have a feeling that only a portion of the game's brilliance can be experienced in such a short window.
Another game that might appeal to you, if you like Diablo-esque dungeon crawlers, is Mythos. It's like an MMO Torchlight. Very fun, although the dungeoun design leaves a bit to be desired, at least pre lvl 20.
DDO is also a really good game, and a nice break from your typical MMORGP. It is instanced, but they do a much better job of "faking" an open world then a game like Vindictus.
Ryzom just announced going Free-mium. Worth a look at, and unique.
Well sadly darkfall is out. After 3 tries it still has corrupted or bad files. More suggestions are welcome. I am looking into the other games that were mentioned too
Fallen Earth is your best bet. $40 you say...
Why not get a free copy right........ here http://www.alienwarearena.com/giveaway/fallen-earth
get a free rifle while you're at it
Also, I would recommend Global Agenda if you fancy some 3rd Person shooter MMO fun. It's a pretty good game and the new quest zone is fun + it's free to play once bought.
And a free trial if you don't want to pay full price straight off the bat http://store.steampowered.com/app/17020/?snr=1_4_4__13
Enjoy!
I would like you to expand upon this, explaining what you mean.
Wow thanks for the heads up. I have signed up and made an account and i am downloading the client. This looks really cool. I have only tried the demo out a while ago and I know a lot has changed.
Also how is Lineage 2? I see them in stores for like 10 dollars? I dont mind grind nor graphics. Also any more? I will also check out global agenda demo.
