Hmm City of heroes did not have loot chase or raids, when it was released and hence it was never able to retain its subscribers.
Like it or not people want end game/raids what ever you want to call it other wise they are going to abandon once they ding to max level.
Added: Same is true even with Guild wars which they are apparently rectifying with GW2.
Guildwars have a lot of players still, I would say there is as many now as when I started 5 years ago... And GW2 will not have raiding. It will have huge scaleable open events anyone can join but that is very different from raids. Besides, it will have no raid gear anyways and that is the main reason most people raid.
Raiding can be fun if well done but there are other possible options to raids.
What a game need is good endgame content, the exact type of it isn't that immportant even though a game with more types of endgame have the potential to get more players.
CoHs problem was a lot more than no raiding. The quests were not that well written and the city felt 2 dimensional.
But really, how many of the MMO players regurly raid? 10? Maybe even 15% but it sure isn't more.
GW2 also has level scaling so that when you go back to lower level areas you can still do content and have it still be challening without you 1-shotting everything.

GW maintains a player base because it is free but the box sales has more or less died down. Yes GW 2 technically does not have raids but concept seems similar. Where did you hear about not having raid loot? seems like these event drop loot.
As for raiding back in 2.0 it was around 5% but now more like 30-35% i think blizzard has done great job making raiding easier for event the casuals. IMO raiding is very important to maintain a solid player base (there are plenty of players who can't try out rift since they are dedicated raiders in WoW), because the rest of playerbase will likely churn and leave for another MMO.
CoH improved a lot of that with CoV but lack of end game really killed it IMO.
Well Anyways this is how mmorpgs should be i think Trion pull out a very smooth Launch best i have seen out of any mmorpg and since there game was not unfinshed it can already be having huge content for it coming out it is really really good Rift should set a new standard

WoW seems to have less than 30% raid now since Cata went live, but I do agree that raiding is important for a solid player base

While Wow have a lot more players than any other single P2P MMORPG there are still a lot more players than Wow players, particularly if you count F2P players as MMO players as well.
Even if raiding in Wow now have 35% of the players I really doubt more than 15% of all MMO players raid. It is still a rather popular form of endgame but there are few options in Wow, you can PvP or grind faction once your gear is good enough.
A MMO needs endgame, that is true and it is good if raiding is included but we need more things to do and there are a lot of possible options. MMOs are older than raiding and we will see more endgame options in the future.
GW maintains a player base because it is free but the box sales has more or less died down. Yes GW 2 technically does not have raids but concept seems similar. Where did you hear about not having raid loot? seems like these event drop loot.
You get loot for all events yes. But raid gear usually have better stats than the average gear and that isn't true for GW2. It has been said many times.
GW still have players because it is fun as well. There are many "free" MMOs out there and a lot of them are pretty dead. Of course box sales are low, the sequel is comming soon. But frankly isn't Wow selling that many new accounts lately either, both games are so old that most potential players in the west already tried the games.
Let me explain the difference between raiding and GW2s large open events:
In raiding you gether up a group, usually guildmates and allies even if some PUGs exist. You get down to the raid, in some games you might have to clear out certain areas or dungeons to even get to the raidzone.
You and yor exclusive group then do the raid (which in 99.9% is instanced), which can be everything between a single really nasty boss and a gard huge dungeon. After it the group get some great loot but never enough for everyone, and the loot is usually better than anything the players can get anywhere in the game, with possible exception of certain PvP armor.
In GW2 the boss fight will be initiated because something the players have done. People close will notice stuff like sieges, a huge dragon sweeping down and attacking or something else. Everyone in the area can choose to join and you don't need to group.
Aftwards the event will have some impact on the server, until another event changes it back or to other way. All players get a token they can exchange to a certain NPC for some kind of loot, but it will not be better loot than most other for the same level.
Clearly there is a lot of differences between raids and large scale events, if you missed that you just should read up a bit more on GW2. There are likenesses as well since in both cases we have large groups of people working together in PvE but there are more differences than similarities.
Glad to see the company working hard on their product Doesn't say what will be included with the major content update but to me this is great news! I've stated to people many times that Trio has a great base to work with, and can do so much more with it!
That is indeed good news. They got a lot of new customers and if they play their cards well they might be able to keep a good part of them.
They have a great advantage to games like AoC and WAR, which had to spend their first year fixing bugs and optimize the game, Trion can start adding stuff directly.

That is actually for dungeons only. The events you are talking about reward with gold, exp, and karma (which is used to buy items from special vendors). For events like the shatterer fight, a large communal chest is dropped and people don't have to roll against each other to compete for loot.

Ok, close but no cigarr. Still, my point is as valid as before, karma or token.
And yes, some awards drops loot as well, or so they did in the demos. Still, far from raiding.
im sry but adding content so soon is only telling me that the game is full of fast lvling and shallowness...why release a mmorpg that doesnt have enuff to keep people interrested for such a short period of time..and i even bet money people are already wanting even more endgame stuff to do...its sad to see soo many mmorpgs being released like this and just makeing the "newer" mmorpg player drones that want to play mmo's that you can cap in a month and always demand content everyother month
Raiding is not my idea of content, let alone end game content, so they better come out with something a lot better than raids if they want to keep me as a customer or I'll move on to games like SWTOR and never look back.
Youll move on and never look back to a game youve never played but are so sure its better? Sounds like youve got an incurable case of the grass is always greener........somewhere else.
Shame the trolling of this game won't cease, but then neither will my enjoyment of this game.
Luckily, no troll is powerful enough to talk you into believing you don't enjoy something that you actually do... yet!
Aryas
So posting that Trion is "..already looking to add in Major Content update" when they have just posted to say that they will do it, sometimes "soon", without any specific is not trolling?
It works both ways you know...
Some people try to talk you into buying something you might not enjoy and some people try to talk you into not buying something you might enjoy. I would say the former is worse as you may end up losing money where as the latter one you lose nothing.
So by your own definition that would make 100% of the posts regarding games that havent shipped yet trolling,
This is what I kind of predicted in some of the earlier threads about rift. I myself decided not to play it for various reasons, however, the one thing I noted during beta is that game is "finished" in the sense of what they have works and no major bugs or issues that I could see. The result of this is the fact that post release they can concentrate on adding content to flesh out the game rather than spending the first three months just doing bug fixes and hotpatches.
The complainers will always complain about stupid stuff but the fact is Trion is on the right path with this game for the audience they are trying to appeal to...it just so happens I am not in that audience and I am still waiting for a game that will appeal to me.
Nicely written.!! It is seldom that I read a post of an individual that does not like or want to play retail version of the game for personal reason still given an objective post.
Glad to see the company working hard on their product Doesn't say what will be included with the major content update but to me this is great news! I've stated to people many times that Trio has a great base to work with, and can do so much more with it!
Honestly, good luck to Trion. Rift wasn't my cup of tea - I find that what they are trying to do is already out there being done better and on a larger scale - but competition in the free market is always a good thing.
Here's to hoping Trion improves their content, increases their player base, and drives the developers of games I prefer to play to try even harder.

This is so ridiculous.
How many recent MMORPGs have been released that were so inadequete and not ready to be released?
We finally see one that is actually polished and stable... probably the most stable and polished MMORPG ever launched, and we have this joker who is complaining about a pure speculative position.
Gods, we need more critical thinking classes in our education systems, not just for proper punctuation, but for logical thought and reasoning.
I can already tell this person has not played this game at all, if he has, he certainly has not gotten to the end game.
This fellow is a damn good reason to support educational funding for whatever country he, she, or you, might be from.
The leveling is to fast, but adding content is not going to be a bad thing. We live in an age where players leave a game if they can't reach top level in two weeks. Unfortunatly MMO's now cater to that.

Quite so and it seems they are really fine tuning the game.

Might be seen as minor to some but to me it shows game is still being polished and taken care of... long term vision for sure.
