During last week's GDC, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller had the opportunity to participate in a Guild Wars 2 panel. The Norn, Thief and a large-scale dynamic event were the focus of the panel. Garrett's got all the important information taken from the panel. Read on and then let us know what you think.
At GDC this week we got that chance to preview some material from Guild Wars 2. The presentation focused on the Norn race, personal story elements, and the reveal of the Thief class. Overall, the game continues to impress every time we see it. In this latest update a lot of depth was presented in terms of the player’s story. We watched an early run through of the Norn starting zone which incorporated a lot of story. The Thief had a ton of options that were showed off and we will try to outline all of them. Lastly the action combat remained at the forefront of everything they showed. This is our first look at Guild Wars 2 for 2011, let’s start the run down and see if the expectations continue to be met.

Cool article.
I just had a flashback with the Rift's rifts, and I have come to the conclusion that dynamic events will not be like rifts. There are like 4 kinds of rifts, but there are over 1000 uniqe dynamic events. I hope DE create an adventuring atmoshere. I would like the scenery to change at a good pace. Hopefully we'll be able to stroll through the world saftely if we desire. Monster density was way too high in Rift, I would not like to be chased around all the time and die even 5 minuts.

Still awaiting details related to beta, but I love every new tidbit I see.
You and me both... Then there's the part where i'm still waiting to be selected for the beta!
Just looking around... Hoping GW2's community won't suck
This game will likely change the face of MMORPGs forever.
beta cannot come soon enough
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
You and me and him both? No, everyone is excited for the beta details, I guess :P I'm super excited! WOHO

Well don't hold your breath, cause ArenaNet are going for a super exclusive closed-beta that could go on for a long time (depending on feedback) and an open-beta that will likely crop up a few weeks before release.
Definitely worth the wait I say.
ArenaNet will have the same system as GW1 as we get closer to release. Beta weekends was the system they used withbGW1 and from all accounts it will be the same as we get closer to release.
They should make beta a HoM reward lmao. Not too far in the rewards though, then again, it should be too easy. Most of the stuff like torment weapons and stuff just take forever to get.
Amen to that, man

How is this any different then what Rift has now? The leveling through events sounds like a nice change, but for the Rift haters explain how that Pirate invasion is any different then a planar invasion?
^Rift has got 6 types of Rifts, Guild Wars 2 has got 1600+ Dynamic Events.
Also, Rifts scale in a very weird way. I can't say how often I got killed in two seconds when I was the only one fighting a Rift or didn't even get a chance to cast a spell at a boss because the players killed him in two seconds. The scaling of Dynamic Events is based on participation of the people doing the Event, and not on the amount of players in a zone.
Lastly, why are you bringing up a comparison between Rift and GW2 even though this thread is only about the GW2 demo shown at GDC?
Well the pirate "invasion" is not an invasion, unless you count raiding a town a an invasion. Also, as far as I am aware of, Planar invasions in Rift don't spawn other events. The event system in GW2 is designed to be chaining so that depending on what you do in a particular event then another event will chain from your actions.
You guys have no issues invading our forums and threads saying GW2 will kill Rift/WoW/War/Aion/AoC/SWToR with all of this content. I am interested to see what the hype is about.
I am just interested to see how it will work.
^And because some people attack your game, you decide to lower yourself to their level of maturity and attack their game as well?
I just want to see how this game is supposed to change up the MMO scene. Trion and Blizzard are not stupid and if tehy see ArenaNet has got a great idea they are going to copy it.
The alternate is interesting to say the least. I always wondered how that would actually work.
Well, the best explanation can really be found at either: http://www.wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dynamic_events_system, and otherwise: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/view/forums/thread/287180/Everything-We-Know-about-GW2.html
I think that the most important reasons for me to be hyped for GW2 are the lack of the holy trinity and the more action-based combat.
Perhaps one of the best introductions to dynamic events can be found in this video (it's quite long though):

That is where I am worried about the game. I understand the drive to get rid of gather x or y quest, but that leveling system has worked for a good 20 years for a reason. It might be dangerous to toy around with it.
It is an interesting concept and if it catches on it would be great.
That's probably the least of my concerns. Because in the original game, most of the content/the storyline took place after you reached the level cap. You also need to remember that the game is B2P, people may or may not play it alongside a P2P MMORPG. And I imagine that WvWvW-PvP and the replayability of the Personal Story and dungeons will also hold people for quite some time.
Make the judegement yourself on the features on paper of dynamic events so far described? Here's a summary I previously did for example of the core features of DYNAMIC EVENTS; and we can actually summarize Rift's DYNAMIC CONTENT aka RIFTS; now it's released whereas we have not fully mapped out all the DEs varieties apparently described in this commentary.
Not saying one or the other is better, because both should be released/played to say that but we are at least informed, no?
Ranger has some serious competition now for the mobile class... great description of the THIEF : )

Well if you really want to see how the dynamic events in GW2 are different then all the other dynamic events that have been released. Watch the PAX GW2 event panel 1-10 (the videos listed on the right side of the youtube page I have linked) in this video they design a dynamic event with the audience. You also get to see the potential of the effects of events going throughout the whole zone. Plus how the events chain together to form a world that is always moving, in essence getting rid of the static world that has been part of MMOs for a long time. At least I have not seen anything in any other MMO that is close to this design. Of course this is all based on Anet pulling off the dynamic events and people enjoying them. There are still some big Ifs where this is concerned, since it is so much different than the norm.
And this is where I come back to my post about GW2 being B2P: It won't kill anything, it will coexist with WoW or whatever P2P MMORPG that nukes down WoW. I simply expect it to be far more successful than GW1 was.
I am not concerned; Anet is designing the dynamic events so they cannot be griefed. With that and the ability to turn off chat channels, I can enjoy the game the way I want to without any idiots out there ruining my fun.
Yeap i'd figure that, but what the hell, let me dream ((((((((
