If you played an arcade way way back you surely gonna remember Defender and Stargate. For me its the most frustrating game in the world. I wasted alot of pennies on that game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWQJ8ZSj6e8

For me, off the top of my head I'd say the old Tie Fighter and X-Wing games from Lucas Arts. I had a cheap PC and it would stutter on me at times particularly running the race courses. I swore they wanted you to be a jedi in order to win just to hype the movie characters. ;) They were both great games though.

I'll admit theat Myst inspired some nerd rage in me.

splatter house! hahaha! i remember playing this game way back in the sega genesis system. it's really hard to be the last part of the game specially the big bosses.

the other one is in onimusha 3, the training stage. it's really hard to get the stongest skill.

Battletoads on the NES, without a shadow of a doubt. Can't remember ever being able to beat it without an emulator with a save state function.

Ghost & Goblins and Battletoads. I love them so much and hate them so much at the same time! Still play them when I actually need to clear my head. :D Get my blood pumping.

    BOOYAKA!

Unreal Tournament against a friend of mine who used to be a high ranked player when it was very popular. Only time that I didnt even understand what just happened most of the times when I got killed :) And before trying to beat him, I thought that I was quite good lol. I won lot of online matches with Unreal Tournament.

And Guild Wars GvG pvp against a high ranked guild. Back when there was only Guild Wars (now named Prophecies) and Factions. Same again, thinking you are good at pvp and then getting facerolled as if you play the game the first time. Especially one korean guild back then was very feared.

I think Ghosts and Goblins for the NES as well. I've played some games that were "harder" because they were what we call "broken hunks of crap." But Ghost and Goblins takes the cake for hard but possible.

That was a cool game, I remember typing it in, debugging it and playing it, ...stupid wampus I got him in the end, now those where the days of gaming, no loading screens, just type it in your self and tape drive, do you remember Eliza?

Hardest game for me was, Impossible mission on the Commdore 64, never could get all the jigsaw pieces!

I remeber Snark more so. Heh typing in games from magazines. Now they come with paper DVDs, who would have thunk?

Many old arcade and console games get to a point where it gets insanely difficult. But I seem to only remember very difficult PVP encounters. Maybe its because I know how easy it is to make PVE difficult, just turn up speed lol.

yeah i totally agree, most of the old and classic 2d games are somewhat harder to be than the new ones nowadays. my opinion is that most newer games are easy to manage and play rather than the old ones.

    Aztec Challenge.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Though in retrospect it's not that difficult, my first MMORPG was Lineage 2.  Started playing shortly after launch, before WoW was released, and boy what a meatgrinder to throw the newb (me) into, lol!  While the game itself was fairly easy and fun, the meta-game elements were daunting to say the least.

Hmmm, it must be a old C-64 game, they made modern PC games look like a cookie cutter.

Montezumas Revenge? Or H.E.R.O? Something from about 1985 anyways. Modern games are generally easier and more user friendly as well.

I am not sure why, maybe it was more of a geek thing then but now most people play some kind of computer games. Maybe it is just some kind of evolution, or maybe it is just because anyone could make a game in his cellar if he had minimum talent and a months time to spare then, games were made for gamers by gamers then.

Even EA made fun and rather hard games at the time, like Skate or die. :)

    Barbarian

    "HURRR!"

In the game, the player is Hegor, a barbarian who must traverse several dungeons and underground habitats to defeat his brother, the evil sorcerer Necron. He has a sword and bow in his arsenal of weapons. Running and jumping, as with many platform games, comprises a large part of the gameplay of this title.

The game used a unique control system to make up for lack of more than one joystick button on many systems. The player would first press the one button after which a "menu" of actions would appear along the bottom of the screen. The player then selected the desired action by cycling through the choices with the joystick and then pressing the button again when the desired action was highlighted.

Uncompromising control system and sprite animation...
