Best ever made huh? Well after giving it some thought (1 minute worth) I really have to go with WoW. It has the most content. The best retention rate. The best resub rate. The biggest influence. The most cross media penetration. The widest player diversity population and the best overseas penetration. It has all this going for it, but is still not my favorite mmo. That will be UO for a long, long time (here's looking at you AA). But I tried to approach this from a reasonable stance and not get bogged down by my feelings.

I really cannot admit that UO was the best because to me it would be like saying a Ford Model T is the best car. While I respect it for being one of the first, I cannot really expect it to measure up to today's standards. But really if I had to pick a general mmo for people to get started in or for people who are not looking to chase the dragon, I have to go with WoW. It's like that adoption tagline: You don't have to be perfect to be the perfect parent.

WoW is basically THE standard for mmos so far. Our best spokesman mmo if you will...

I once went back to UO (freeshard) for a brief moment. It had been years since I had last played, and I wondered if it was only nostalgia.

When I got in and began playing around, I got astounded time and again, at how well designed and how fun the game was, even with my semi-fresh eyes.

I believe it is more than just nostalgia, I seriously believe that UO is the best MMO made to date - at least the best I played (I never played SWG, alas, the only one, that sounds like it could be close).

Endgame WoW doesn't even qualify as an MMO with its heavy instancing.

UO post-Renaissance but pre-Third Dawn crap.

During the Factions PvP cycle especially.

In fact I'd go as far to say it was the ONLY true MMORPG to ever exist.

No gear, no big stat stacking, fully open and varied skill system, no levels, no experience, no classes, no instancing, completely consensual and awesome open world PvP, player run economy and impressive crafting, player housing, true exploration and dungeon crawling, no ridiculous grinding.

    Perfect.

Well, except for the point and click movement/combat and aging 2D graphics. Very captivating at the time in comparison to the blocky and ugly EQ graphics though. God I hate EQ and everything it did to ruin the genre that SHOULD have followed the UO model.

Sandbox wise, it'd be EVE for reasons stated above. Themepark, EQ2. It just had everything. Lots of races, classes, areas, housing, good crafting, etc.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

Guess I'll go a little outside the box with this one.  An MMO that I enjoyed the most would have been a game I played about 10 years ago called Tibia.  In all aspects the community made the game the best MMO I have ever played, bar none.  The game was a perfect opening act towards my gaming in MMO's.  I can't stress this enough though, the community made the game great, not the actual game.  I haven't played it in many years now, so who knows what it has become.

DAoC - best pvp in any game I have played (though I did like playing my jedi pre cu and running from Bounty Hunters

    SWG pre-cu

I played UO, EQ2, EVE, WoW, WAR, DAoC.

But SWG Pre-CU was the best hands down.

It's without a single doubt, Hurfmagurphia Derpland; a game only existing in m-space.

Sadly we require a trans-dimensional transponder to be able to play it.

For this however, we still need to discover 'slood' ("much easier to discover than fire, and only slightly harder to discover than water", according to mister Terry Pratchett).

Isn't it always the next one coming out or the one you used to play but not the current one?

    Only my opinion.

The one I enjoyed the most was Anarchy Online Pre Shadowlands.

SWG pre cu is a close second.

Can you really judge best game ever made, when they are still making games?  When deciding best game ever wouldn't you want to wait till they are no longer making games.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Thats easy EQ though UO came out first, EQ has more of a following and was maintained better.

UO - No one still has all the options that are/were in it, from long ago.

Best 3D is EQ, before the LDoN type stuff....I dislike instances.

I have been playing these games for more than 5 years now, but I still consider myself kind of new to the MMORPG genera.  My first MMO was SWG during the CU, but I only played the game for about a week.  I regret that I was one of the many people who let SOE know through their surveys that the game was far too complex, boring, and completely lacking far too many essential SWs elements.  I foolishly went into the game expecting it to deliver a game experience like those found in single player RPGs like KOTOR.  Now that I have a greater understanding and appreciation of what the MMORPG genera is all about, I wish I would limited my criticism of game for just its lack of essential SWs elements.

After leaving SWG during the CU I went straight to WOW, and it helped me develop a greater understanding of what the genera was all about.  I went back to SWG not long after the launch of the NGE, and truthfully I found the game much more accessible, but what really kept me hooked was the community on my home server.  I have yet to find an online gaming community as memorable as the one I encountered in SWG.  Another thing about the game that still really stands out to me is its diverse gameplay.  For people who didn’t care about combat the game offered a ton of non-combat activities like entertaining, decorating, fishing, sightseeing and a truly complex yet rewarding crafting system.  For players that were interested in high level PVE content there were numerous dungeons and heroic encounters.  PVP be it in space or on the ground was incredible on my server.  The game was nowhere near perfect, and it’s inexcusable what SOE did to its players, but I still love the game none the less.  I truly wish more current games offered the gameplay variety found in SWG.

For me....undeniably UO.  Second place to EQ2 for being the first 3D that I really loved. Yes, I missed EQ because I was playing UO.

For Themepark games, DAoC wins out over the others.

For Sandbox(ish) games, early UO days.  Once I became a multi-millionaire, I realized how messed up the game's economy was and lost interest.

The best still, was Arcadia.  A PK MUD from back in the mid-90's.
