Invasions as Content -> Extremely repetitive content that becomes boring, and dull after a short amount of time. Not exactly something done right here Bill.
Leveling Through PvP -> Star Trek Online did this too, as did DAOC, and the problem that cropped up in both is friend (or people with multiple accounts) farmed the crap out of their own characters. There are not enough stopgaps in-place currently to balance this feature.
Mounts at Level One -> Numerous developers have already gone over this, and explained why this is a bad idea. Rift shows the problem quite clear, and that problem is that your mount becomes worthless. If it takes nothing to get the mount worth doing, it's not worth having. Who cares if you get from A to B faster, you did it like everyone else did so you're still essentially walking there. What's the point of even having to get somewhere? What's the point of even having mounts? You're ALL going the same speed, just as if you were walking. Pointless, pointless, pointless, fluff.
I'm sorry Bill, but you've presented nothing that could be considered "Things Rift did right" .
No offense, but that's why it's called an opinion. Just like what you did, you quoted him then stated your opinion. Neither are right or wrong, they reflect how you see and enjoy the game. Not saying you did anything wrong, but neither did Bill. Not everyone has to agree with what you think though. And that last line you wrote pretty much trys to force that.
I agree, however Bill states that it's 5 "factual" things that Rift has done right. The way he presents them in such a public manner that changes it from "Opinion" to something supported by MMORPG as fact. They shouldn't present them in this manner if they're mearly their own opinion.
I don't understand what you're trying to get at other than to disagree. The first thing he mentions in the article is that those were his opinions which even if he didn't, most of us would know to assume so.
1. Open Grouping: I like it, but I hate it. I like that it encourages grouping, but many times it is just annoying. I had some random guy group with me, then drop group right after I killed a quest mob, this kind of leeching occurs way too often. I hope future MMO devs look at this feature and try to make it better, because it is a good idea, just has annoying flaws to it.
2. Ascended Soul System: I like that you can easily switch around and become what you want, that is something future Devs should look into. However, I hate that the classes don't have real depth. Several classes feel similar, and it begged the question "Why have classes?" too often for me. So how Rift allowed freedom with the classes was great, but I would like to see future devs combine this with indepth unique feeling classes too, if they have classes.
3. Invasions as Content: Nothing I disagree about, I loved the invasions too.
4. Leveling Through PVP: Every game should allow this. Being able to level through pvp has existed in the mmo world for a long time, so I dont' see why most new MMO's don't have this as an option.
5. Mount at Level One: Don't really see how this can be done right or wrong. If I made a MMO I wouldn't have the mounts at level one, I would have them early, but feel like a reward, something to strife for. I guess it matters for different MMO's, Rift's world is extremely small in the early levels, and I see no reason them at all, doesn't make it feel much different.

He states that? Find the word "fact" anywhere in his article. Oh, you put that word in the article? Thought so.
"on my own personal takes on what Trion’s freshman release has done right, and what it’s done wrong. "
"Keep in mind, as always, that these lists are just my opinion."
Sorry, but some parts of this ad, whoops... "article" of course, make no sense to me. Like, how does the soul system improve replayability? I mean, what is replayability? To have a reason to play again from scratch, right? Like, in Fallen Earth to try other ways to spend your AP on professions, skills and attributes (since there is (or at least "was" when I played) no way to respect, apart from after major changes). Or as in WoW, with it's 10 classes and a dozen starting zones. But the soul system in Rift? I just have to create four characters, and then I have access to any combination of abilities in the game! I will never have to level up another character again. How is this improving replayability? The soul system kills replayability in favor of flexibility. That's the point. The soul system is great for people who love flexibility, and horrible for those who like replayability. Not to mention the insane amount of two starting zones for the entire game. How does that go with replayability? If you just mention positive aspects with those articles: why not, everyone to his own. But trying to make people believe the exactly opposite of what is true...
When I played the beta, I think I got access to a mount somewhere between lvl 10 and 20, can't really remember. Definately not on level 1 though, except if it was a promo mount. Same as in WoW as far as I know. Oh, and you can also get a mount in Fallen Earth on level 1 as well, if you really want to.
I have the similar perspective of "The soul system kills replayability in favor of flexibility." although I'd like to add that replayability isn't clearly defined and to an extant to each's own. So, it's possible that the author's perspective is different to ours.
Getting a mount at lvl 1 is not possible but I guess if u had access to a mount at lvl 1 in this game, you'd b able to use it anyways.
I agree that the invasion as content idea is good. The implementation sucks - aside from the repetition, the UI gets in the way.
The rifts repeat - it's the same content over and over at the rift, and always at the same location. It might be nice if they drifted.
How many invasions have you seen in a movie or on TV that have a counter pop-up that tells you who you have to kill and how many? The stupid interface kills all possibility of immersion into the invasions since you're constantly hand-held by the UI on what you need to do.
The invasions themselves can be pretty pathetic. 9 mutant zombies is not exactly what I'm thinking when I hear "invading army".
1. Open Grouping - I love this for ease of joining the raid during rift invasion events. But other than that I wish it were auto-off or auto-close. It's weird to have some random person just join your party and not say anything. So for a while I turned it off, then wondered why people weren't joining my group during an event. Oh, that's right, it's off! Turn it back on...event over... turn it off...oh a rift!...turn it on. Meh. I was one of the people lobbying for this mechanic during beta, for the benefit of the rift events. I don't like that it spills over into the entire game. But that's my opinion.
5. Mount at Level One - Yeah, I disagree with you Bill as this as being a great feature. I prefer games where getting a mount is a big deal, or at least requires a good amount of effort. I also prefer to see a game world where people are running on foot and exploring and not racing from one objective to the next and eating up the content at lightning speed.
Mounts from level 1 IF you have the collectors addition or someone sends you the plat to buy one - otherwise when would you honestly, on your first character, see a mount - not level 1 - lust like looms in WoW or mounts in EQ2 these are perks for having either paid more cash or have already leveled a toon high enough to afford to send your new alt enough cash to buy them.
I don't have a mount yet, so yes I would love to have one! It takes me a long time to get from point A to point B. I almost have the 2.5 plat necessary to purchase one and I'm at lvl 16.
mounts are pointless fluff? wow never heard someone say that. lol weird
Exactly, what's the point of having to GET a mount to get some where faster if everyone else gets the same mount & speed from lvl 1? There's no achievement, and little purpose to the world being any size larger than it needs to be for you to walk there if mounts are something EVERYONE has.
Again, this makes mounts worthless fluff. They're nothing special, and require nothing to obtain.
When you walk so slow and have to travel so far, like in Freemarch, it's almost a requirement to have a mount from level 1 or else you're wasting tons of time running from point a to b to b to c to a and over again.
Everyone moving at the same speed isn't the point, nor is the achievement of having enough money or fame to get a mount, it's that the world is too spread out and quests send you too far away to make running there anything close to fun and nothing more than a waste of time.
Open Grouping > Star Trek Online did this, and it was terrible, but REQUIRED in Rift to do anything of note worthyness.
STO was a complete fail of a game and the way it's open grouping was implemented does not even come close to how well it was done in Rift.
The Ascended Soul System > DAOC did this but in a LESS mobile sense. Not only is this not new, but the way it was designed favors "Flavour of the Month" builds to frequent the game.
DAOC is ANCIENT history and does not even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as a shiny new and well done mmo such as Rift.
Invasions as Content -> Extremely repetitive content that becomes boring, and dull after a short amount of time. Not exactly something done right here Bill.
Wrong again! The invasions, while usually attacking the same areas, always go down differently. The number and location of spawns, random loot, dynamics of the battle.... man you need to come up with something better if you're going to shoot down Bill's points!
Leveling Through PvP -> Star Trek Online did this too, as did DAOC, and the problem that cropped up in both is friend (or people with multiple accounts) farmed the crap out of their own characters. There are not enough stopgaps in-place currently to balance this feature.
Again, STO was a complete fail of a game and AGAIN Rift is the FIRST fantasy themed mmo to offer levelling XP in the battlegrounds/warfronts. It's obvious how weak your arguments are when you have to use STO as your example.
Mounts at Level One -> Numerous developers have already gone over this, and explained why this is a bad idea. Rift shows the problem quite clear, and that problem is that your mount becomes worthless. If it takes nothing to get the mount worth doing, it's not worth having. Mount doesn't mean anything if you don't have to earn it? A slow-assed basic mount meant for the first 40 levels.... really??? That friggin turtle is so slow it should only cost 2 gold as opposed to 2 platinum. FYI the REAL mounts that you get at 40 & 50 will be earned. No sense in robbing the early levels of their SLOW-ASSED mount.
I'm sorry Bill, but you've presented nothing that could be considered "Things Rift did right" .
I'm sorry but you've used DAOC and STO to prove you know nothing about how awesome Rift is!

On Rocklift you could just mine iron nodes in Stonefield for 30 mins and have more than enough plat to buy your first mount. People make it sound like a chore to save for a mount.
Can't comment on the pvp because i have no interest in it.
The Invasion i have commented on before,i felt it is no where near done rright, because the AI is basically null and it is a total zerg or nothing affair, mainly becuase of the poor AI.I won't make another long post describing how it can be done better, but fact is it needs lots of improvement, before i would say it was done right.
Grouping, again i also commented on it before, the auto grouping is or sounds like a decent feature on paper, but in reality it is just a bunch of people under the same banner but no real grouping goes on.I shouldn't say none,as i am sure soembody witnessed some actual grouping within the auto feature,i never,it was always just a pile of soloers within the group.
The Soul system,is definitely up in the air for topic discussion,i can see how many will like it,i felt it is over done, meaning you cannot really call yourself a class if you have basically any ability you want. For example ,i cannot see why anyone would not take advantage of having a pet.Yes i agree having optimum choices does give replayability, but i am not so sure Rift offers a good replay value,i guess if you really love the game, then yes.I could see it's real use trying various pvp builds, but doing those same quests over again, not so fun.
Mounts, well that is hardly a category i would say is done right, especially using the idea that it is good "because" it is at level 1.My idea is that if you are so bored with traveling the game terrain at level 1,then you 100% are in the wrong game.Anyhoot,if i was going to comment on mounts being good, then they would need to have an in depth design, like perhaps new skills learned whilst on a mount, perhaps your mount has some attack skills, equivalent to driving a vehicle and it has some attack modes.Basically anything that makes a mount above and beyond just a means of travel ,could be said to be done "right",otherwise it sounds like we are REALLY stretching for something to give credit to.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I am a 50 cleric, guardian side with 1.1k spellpower unbuffed now and I honestly have to say that the PvP in this game is way too uneventful, and too .. the same.
Every WF is just the same old premade that has either 5 titan strike warriors or 4 sabs and 1 cleric.
It's getting a bit boring to play with the same group over and over now just to win.
If only they added something more than WF grinds for the pvp. :<
I love the RIFT events... it's awesome! Little boss events spawning made this game for me. Never the same, it's so much better than other grind quest titles!
Well i would agree with you,Rifts were not one of the 5 topics, the closest was Invasions.Invasions play out way different than Rifts, they are much harder ,Rifts are basically very easy .
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Invasions were awesome for the first few days, then they became a little tedious. After 2 weeks of playing I gave up and logged out every time one started.
And now I just can't even find the will to log in at all.
What I find funny is only 2 guilds have finished atleast 2 raids in the WORLD. No one has maxed achievements no one has done every expert rift or closed every rift type. So people complaining they are bored problably haven't even done 50% of what I just listed. You my friend are bored of mmo in general. As far as the mount person yea you go and walk everywhere if you like. Mounts mean something in any game it saves you the most important resource of them all (time) More time means more money loot raiding and sleep. So its not fluff because its fairly even out amoung the population. I wouldnt even say fairly a epic mount is 100 plat in the game. Which is the same as 1000 gold in wow. It's not exactly easy unless you semi good enough to get it. Anyone who has earned the right to ride around in style. Sorry its not epic enough for you. You must of wanted a Lexus mount or something smh.
Oh and as the OP says its been out one month. If you quit on a game that launched with higher then expected player retention. And manage to punch wow in the face severly unlike any game before it. Then again maybe you are just tired of mmo's. They all follow the same path. And none come out the first month flawless. Up until rift nothing even came out polished enough to even say we can be a contender. Show some patience do some beta test reports some bugs. Complaining here is the equal to a tree falling in a forest no one hears.
Sorry, but no I despise STO with a passion. They did EVERYTHING wrong with that game (except for maybe the graphics).
I've played almost every SINGLE MMO to date, except ones as of late that are obvious clones of a game that "Shall Not be Mentioned" as it's mentioned enough in today's media.
Furthermore, you cannot post an article on MMORPG.com and have it be merely read as an opinion simply because you put a disclaimer on it. If it's an article linked, and hosted, by MMORPG.com it is taken as some sort of "positive reinforcement" that is wholey biased and completely out of place on the site. You're giving your opinion power, and trying to reinforcement a game you obviously enjoy.
Among other things on this site, you need to put more points in your article about how it relates to YOUR experience, and how it means nothing to anyone else. If I had opinion A, then X number of people will have an opinion of B on the same subject. Argueing about it is pointless, and reinforceing yours over someone elses in a factual context (as seen with this "article") is just wrong.
I whole heartedly agree that opinions should be allowed on these forums (much to the dismay of the moderators), but PLEASE stop trying to push your own agenda. MANY MANY MANY MANY people believe Rift is simply a clone of that game that SHALL NOT BE MENTIONED. Yet, you love the game and believe it's NOT a clone. Let us agree to disagree and stop posting blog articles about how awesome X game is that you play yourself as it only causes issues .
It's obviously my opinion, having actuallytried Rift, that Rift is a terribly boring & uninventive game. Yet you have the opposite, but relegating an entire article about it that is posted on the front page of MMORPG.com is a little insulting if I can't clearly voice my opinion on the matter without being attacked! :O
-Faded
The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity: Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
Fadedbomb thiers really no such thing as a clone in mmo. Wow is a clone of several games before it. It basically took several games aspecs too many too even list. And stuffed it into a lore thats a mirror image of already published stories in the world. Mankind is known to take something that works and improve upon. Thats called good business and has been done since caveman days. If you really think that will change better stop buying cars, houses ,clothes hell anything its all clones.
If you wanna cry clone every minute every game is a clone of pong then. Rift has its on identity the same way wow does. The idea's wow came up with was not its own. It's base UI isnt even its own. Hell problably 2% of the population of wow even uses its base UI other 98% mods it away immediately to look like other games. Maybe mods shut down posts like that because its a incorrect over and over trolling statement. Your basically ignorant of gaming history constantly crying clone this and that. Id perma ban people who did that all the time. Opinions are fine bad logic bad understanding and ignorance is unnacceptable.
What makes gaming fun is taking old ideas and adding your own for a new experience. It's very hard to come up with something that's seperating and new. What you can do is come up with fresh and new look on things. Somethings combined together make for a new experience. I'm 50 maxed on rift let me tell you one point not in the article. When your maxed rift gives you more to do then any game before it. No you wont gain exp but the story continues actually interesting. You affect things get events do more heroic ventures. 85 in wow I was like blah time to dungeon grind then whipe over and over until we win in BWD. Which happen then what um obsolutely jack. Your epic your shiny next patch you get to run zg/za another 1000 times. And take on good ol ragnaros AGAIN!!!!! In the patch following people wonder why the hardcore gamers bailed on wow. I can tell you from personal experience 4 top 100 wow guilds now play rift and never coming back.
TAB 123... For the love of god this is soooooooooooooo old now.
This is a game that used the keyboard as a user interface. What is it that you expect? Attach diodes to your forehead in order to telepathically activate your character's abilities?
And while you complain about using TAB 1 2 3, why not hop over to every Playstation game ever made and complain that it's just another X, Square, circle, triangle game...yawn!!
The game is okay for what it does.. But the PvP balance is horrid at this point.. They nerfed SOME classes (or brought their values "in line") but all that did is make the values they didn't bring "in line" wayyyy more powerful now. I am not sure if they are oblivious to what is going on in their game now that many people are at 50 and have to grind warfronts or put yourself at the mercy of the "expert or raid" board who then will only want you if you are wearing epics already (sucks if your guild is still leveling) and the only epics you can really obtain by yourself are the crafted ones or PvP gear.. Most common route at 50 = Warfront grind.
My point though however is that for warfronts to be thrusted into the limelight at max level, there are a few classes with skills that simply output a little too over the top compared to the output of other skills of souls with similar roles, ex. Champion. They didn't fix healing, so while healing is still pretty over the top, Champions are able to basically 3 shot anyone. So put the 2 together and you have what majority of people are discovering is all you need for a garaunteed win.. A healbotted Champion..
They really need to examine some things before it falls down.. If we are all pigeon holed into a few select over powered souls, then that is all we are going to see and that will get old very very fast.

I haven't played Rift and probably never will, but I think your last point is especially bad.
'All players are going the same speed if they all have mounts'.
And what speed is that? I'll give you a clue, it starts with an F and ends with a T.

Shame it has an excuse for a world and in reality other than hack and slash shouldn't be classed as an MMO. No real depth.
A single feature that is nice is really not enough.

Gamer by nature,
poet by heart.
It's obviously my opinion, having actually tried Rift, that Rift is a terribly boring & uninventive game. Yet you have the opposite, but relegating an entire article about it that is posted on the front page of MMORPG.com is a little insulting if I can't clearly voice my opinion on the matter without being attacked! :O

The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity:
Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
