Guild Wars 2: The Hylek

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Guild Wars 2 site has been updated with a profile of one of the enemy races to be found in the game. This time the amphibious Hylek are showcased. These froglike creatures are masters of poisons and known to be fierce warriors. "Hylek" was once the name of an individual tribe of these beasts but all tribes have united under the racial moniker "Hylek" in the current GW 2 universe.

Hylek live in small, independent tribes. These tribes consist of anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of hylek. Each tribe is ruled by a single hylek chieftain who holds sole and absolute authority. Successful chieftains typically consult with the priests and elder members of the tribe lest popular sentiment turn against them.

Individual tribes are extremely territorial and it is rare for them to cooperate with one another. The various tribes of the hylek are differentiated by color, which also hints at how aggressive that particular tribe is. In fact, the color of a hylek tribe is also a good indication of the strength of the toxins that they generate; those tribes that produce the deadliest toxins are the most aggressive and dangerous to outsiders. When first making contact with a hylek tribe, it is wise to approach cautiously until you can determine whether they will be treat you as a guest and trade partner or as a threat to exterminate.

    GW2 Lesser Races! ftw!

From there, the idea of the hylek as alchemist was born, and the division of the tribes—from xenophobic and hostile to friendly and more cultured—was born.

    THIS.

It always makes the world fell bigger and more complex when minor races are given an identity like this, and the world is one of the things that is really starting to draw me to GW2. Background lore makes me feel like I have a reason to be killing these critters, rather than merely the fact that they are experience for the grind. A game should be built around a world, rather than a world built around a game, and ArenaNet seem to share this belief.

ArenaNet certainly seem to have gone with an Incan or Aztec feel to these Hylek, especially in the names. I never really followed GW1, so I assume it was the same there. Hope I'm not going to bump into Montezuma though. image

All hail the Pixel, for it is glorious Orange!

Save your women, Frogloks are invading.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

No, the five races Anet announced to be playable in the initial release of GW2 are what we get. Besides those five however, there are other intelligent races which are, at least in part, friendly. Examples are the Hylek, the Kodan, the Grawl, the Skritt, the Quaqqan and Ogres.

It's kind of odd that we don't see more races like this as playable in games. People love strange creatures and to play as them, the Hylek would've been an interesting addition.

Also kind of reminds me of the lizard people in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. That or the frog guy from Chrono Trigger lol.

The Hylek history is pretty cool as well, I wouldn't want to have to fight my brothers upon first breath on the earth.

I'm sure Gaile would love to be able to play a frog (again :D)

Hylek and Kodan both have some nice lore behind them and we could be allies one minute and enemies the next, both could be excellent playable races for future expansions.
