From a PvP perspective, if it's more fun/balanced than Warcraft, it will win its population.

I stopped reading after "Warhammer Online and The Old Republic can't keep up with World of Warcraft"........ Talk about incredibly biased.... TOR is not even out yet and he's saying it's subscription numbers and playerbase can't keep up with blizzard... LOL.   Obviously a fanboy.

Like I said, it all comes down to "do I like the game or the company that's making those bold statements or do I dislike the company or its game for whatever personal reasons that may be".

In this it's very much like real life: people are a lot more forgiving if it's their friends or people they like that are talking crap than when it would be done by others.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

It's interesting, I feel conflicted on this statement.

On one hand, I think WoW has been in first place for way longer than it should be, and I would actually be pretty amazed and happy if Guild Wars 2 did so amazingly well (Especially because I think it would bode well for a shift towards the B2P market and possibly a reduction of the average 15 dollar sub fee).

On the other hand, it makes me weep, because I'm like 'Nooo, don't go for the WoW-killer curse!  Why not just say 'Our game will be crap!'.

Oh well, there's a fine distinction between 'We're going to beat WoW' and 'We're aiming for #1', but I'll make myself feel a little better by saying that it's always good to shoot for #1, and the best product you can possibly make.

I don't actually mind people saying they want to be the best game ever, my problem is more with people going "We're totally going to beat WoW'.  I know, it's hard to separate the two statements. :D

To be clear, I don't think that he was talking crap, I thought it's a perfectly valid objectives to aim for, trying to make the best MMO there is and aiming for the number 1 spot. But I thought the same when some EA or BW representatives were making those claims of not wanting to just settle for the number 2 spot. And I also had no problem with the slogan "we're not in Azeroth anymore".

However, what I notice when reading forums like here is the utterly boringly predictable postings where if people like a game or its company then they're very understanding towards comments that are being made by its representatives, and when they dislike a game or its company then they're suddenly indignant and enraged by such comments. It's the double standards and hypocrisy of it all that's so boringly predictable sometimes that it just becomes funny.

I actually have rather hard to see why someone would aim to make a MMO that will have a medium sized player base and be generally average unless they have a really limited budget.

I do think all companies should try to make the best MMO out there. ANET do just like Blizzard have the advantage of having some really experienced people working for them, particularly the programmers and they have a rather odd way to create games today, not so much corporative as EA or Activision owned games are so maybe they can actually pull number one off.

We will see what happens at launch, but based on the vids and what I read is this the most interesting game that will release the next 12 months. But sometimes vids and articles are wrong, anuhow I am looking forward to get my hands on this game.

The number 2 I am looking forward to BTW is World of darkness online... Another game trying something slightly different.

Well, we seperate at the 'We're not in Azeroth anymore' slogan.  I thought it was kind of embarassing.  I would hate it if GW2 did something like that, and even though I would still like GW2, it would be kind of like finding out your favorite sports star wears He-Man underoos.

... it doesn't change their ability to do sports, but man, it's hard to look them in the eye.  ;)

I think it's possible to be of the stance that there's a certain line where you think that once you go over it, you're being a little excessive.

I at least try to be internally consistent.  Like my wife is a vegetarian because she thinks if people won't eat cute things like kittens and bunnies, they shouldn't be hypocritical and eat other meat.  While I always maintained the EXACT opposite, using the same logic.  If you eat cows and chickens, it's hypocritical to not be willing to eat kittens and bunnies. (At least, using the excuse 'Because they're cute'.  I don't eat red meat because the doctor said I have high cholesterol, and it makes my wife happy.  Making your wife happy is a totally awesome reason to do anything. :P ) :)  Same basic logic, different conclusions, both are valid viewpoints and internally consistent.

So, trust me, if Guild Wars 2 came out with the slogan 'This isn't your father's World (of Warcraft)', I'd hide my head under a pillow and cry a little, and express my displeasure.  :)

I think the management for GW2 correctly senses a growing and fundamental shift in the mmog market. There is a growing segment of players(myself included) who have "been there done that" and are looking for a reason to play ANY mmog. Many are not playing at all....many are playing ,just to play something.Someone has to really think...have a vast experience pool, be bold, and have a vision. My sense is GW2 may be game that has enough fresh ideas  to attract a  vast number of players. It's non subscription model (after buying the game) should make it attractive in these challenging economic times.

I say...GO FOR IT  !     Aim High !   The winners will be both the gaming company and the players.

i do think it's possible and maybe not that hard! Look to sports. Tennis maybe as an exsample. or soccer/football. Or maybe something like prepering for the olympics. If you are a good enough player/team you aim for the top spot, no matter who is number 1 at the moment!  And even though you might have a strategy on how to win over the current number 1, it would be insane to think that in itself wins a tournament for you, because you don't know if they are the competitors when you get there!

to qoute jeff strain from ArenaNet from 2007

Don’t believe that there is some magic design element that you will add to your MMO that will allow you to steal all of WoW’s subscription customers. If you find yourself saying, “It’s like WoW, but...,” you’re in trouble. To reiterate an earlier point – go do your own thing, and let them do theirs.

In short having ArenaNet done there own things, and are they not one of the top players? And shouldn't they then aim for being number 1. So far i think the WOW curse have come from contenders that have copied to much and done to little of there own stuff.
