I dont know if anyone saw the article over at IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158889p1.html) - but at the bottom it says all stats are provided by Trion Worlds. The very first one says "currently being played by over 1,000,000 people." I know there were some rumblings about the 1 million accounts at launch, but the wording of this definitely hints towards that many current subs.
Good for Trion if thats true.

I was just about to post this article. It appears they have sold over a million boxes. The question is whether the subs will drop off, which IMO I don't think they will. Success breeds success and many more people will buy the game because of those numbers. So even tho there will always be people quitting the same or more will be buying.. for the next few months anyway IMO.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I've had a feeling that they must be at or near 1 million, being that's way too many servers saying High/Full during peak times, and way too many servers staying at Medium and above even in off-hours for it NOT to be.
But yes, the true challenge is keeping subs = but with promises of new content/events on a seemingly monthly basis, theres almost always a reason to stick around.
If they can continue to work on class balance as often as they are and continue to add new content for end game players, I only see this games success continuing to increase.
Nice! Now lets compare that with vgchartz shall we? oh wow 249,504 after the first 4 weeks. Yes a very accurate site just like Amazon sales were. =D
from what is being discussed on the official fan forums, 1 million digital sales and 300k box. Not bad, I hope they retain the majority and gain even more. My opinion is they will.. time will tell. Funny how some trolls were here at launch trying to say the hadnt even sold 300k total units. Some people are just sad. Anyone who has been playing the game saw then, and can still see as of now, busy and active servers. Like I said, I hope it continues.
vgchartz, the site that doesn't bother to track digital sales? lol yah, that's gonna be accurate.
They need to merge servers or something quick. I don't get the impression that they have 1/4th of the subs they are claiming. My pvp battlegroup has been pairing me with the same people for weeks, and the server population on Tearfall is low. I can't speak for all of the other servers, but I've read the low pop complaint about at least a few servers on the forums.
I think there are a lot of people who sit back and wait a few months to see how a game does before jumping in. For me, I've got one more month 'till the semester is over, so i'll be subbing about an hour after my last final.
nobody believes you.
You all do realize this is April Fool's Day right?
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
can they retain them is the question.
Aion and AoC sold more then that.
WAR sold about same if not more.
You will know in a few days.
I was thinking the same thing
You're taking a stupid IGN article released on April Fool's Day as concrete proof that Rift has 1 million subscribers?!
If Rift gets to 1 million subscribers there will most likely be an official announcement from Trion.
Of course they can. After all they were running a promotion before launch that the longer you sign up to subscribe for Rift, the cheaper it cost per month. Up to 9.95 a month for a 6 month agreement. Trion knew what to do to juggle the numbers and how much those numbers mean to the vocal minority.
Smart move on their part I must say.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
They can't just make up sales and subscription numbers. I don't know why people say this about every MMO. I seriously don't think all these companies are committing fraud.
Wrong. Those three games did not sell more in the first month. Also, WAR and AoC were MASSIVE disspointments that didn't even remotely live up to what the fans were expecting, AOC barely worked at launch and had no content. Rift is one of the most polished MMO's at launch we've ever gotten and it has an impressive amount of content for a new MMO, with promised new content on a regular basis that so far Trion is living up to.
Where Rift fails is at being a next gen MMO, it's not. There's really nothing innovative about it. It basically stole features from what came before and added their own spin to it. It's an ok game but nothing revolutionary. I wouldn't call it a WOW-killer but it does look like it's going to be the only MMO that can compete with WOW for quite a while.
Uh, I can't find the first month sales for WAR, but in the first week it was over 500k, so it is very likely it was over a million. Not sure where you are pulling your info from. But his points stand, based on the fact that many mmos have had strong first month sales despite being total failures in terms of gameplay and longevity.
wiki is your friend
"As of September 30, 2008, WAR had sold 1.2 million copies and had 800,000 registered ".Game launched on 18th so thats same numbers as rift in under 2 weeks.

aion
"Aion was the biggest MMO release in recent years according to NCsoft, with 400,000 pre-orders in the US. The game generated 40.6 billion won ($32.7 million) in the fiscal quarter in South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan.[24] In China, over 1 million players logged in within the first four days of release.[25]"
was released seperately in asia then usa/europe.went on to sell over 1 million is euro/usa with 400,000 per orders in usa.
So in the first week in china it already sold over 1 million
It is possible but it certainly will not last that long. Hope they enjoy it while it lasts.
I don't think you can even call it competing when they claim to have 8.3 % of what WoW claims.Hehe .Or heck they have sold the equivalent of 30-40% in a month of what one of WoW's Expacs did in a weekend. Just pulling your chain btw.Surprised there arn't 100 post screaming WoW killer yet.I surely would call rift a success.I persenolly can't stomache any of todays MMORPG's.I have been revisiting old single player games lately.Did Morrowind a while back .Now replaying through Oblivion. Also messing with Final Fantasy 13 from time to time.I Think I very well may be just a little too old school to touch todays MMO's .Maybe I will Plunge into GW2 .Not sure yet. However I wish Rift Luck on its continuing success.
Yeah, was gonna say AION was a big money maker for NC Soft, and still continues to be one in the eastern markets.. It also was pretty busy during launch as i remember, but after the first month it was a ghost town, the 2nd and 3rd month it reminded me of a dead f2p game lol.. Hopefully Rift can retain, because that is really what its all about.. With that said, i've already purchased 3 more months and this is comeing from someone who's paid month by month ever since i started MMO's, and that's a lot of months in EvE lol..

1 million sales are believable to me, I just think that number drops very fast because the game has little depth to it. I also think the Low setting on their servers is absurdly low, like under 500 players type low. Sometimes I look at server status and every single US server is on medium and that just seems very unlikely unless low is set really low and medium is a really large range.
How many subs/sales they have right now is cool. The main goal is retention, however. Age of Conan and Warhammer also had very high initial bases.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
1.2 million is NOT more than the 1.3 number that was mentioned. So why are you quotting Wiki and proving that i was right?
Warhammer and AOC were both bashed mercilessly and failed to live up to expectations, there is absolutely no comparison between those two games and Rift. I'm not a huge fan of the themepark genre of MMO's but Rift is clearly heads and shoulders above most of the post-WOW mmo's that have been released and the general attitude among the player base is positive, unlike those other two games.
I specifically didn't mention anything about AION. AION is a unique case, it's an Asian grindfest.. whether it sold 1 copy or a billion copies is irrelevant because it's already successful elsewhere.
It's funny how just because you dislike a game you fanboys can't just state that you dislike it and explain why and instead try to bash and lie about how successful it is or isn't. A few weeks ago you were all claiming it barely sold 400k copies. It's been out for a month and it's still in the top 10 (#7 currently) in terms of sales at Steam. The game is successful among the themepark crowd and will be around for a while, get a freaking clue.
(Yes, I'm a notorious RIFT hater.) But I do want to see something make Blizzard think and if it's this game that forces a company with talent to use that talent. Woot.
Their site (riftgame.com), the official forums (@ the same site) still doesn't say anything about 1 million subscribers.
Google news for "rift 1 million" and similar things isn't pulling anything up.
The IGN thing was released on 4/1. I mean really.
I just can't believe they wouldn't make a lot of fanfare if this actually happened. The only downside to such a press release would be admitting that the previous "1 million accounts" release on 2/24 was creative wording (just like someone else still saying "12 MILLION PEOPLE <BLACK SCREEN> HAVE BEEN METER SPAMMED IN HEROICS" or something like that).
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.
12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.
