I'd also like to point something out... they claim they play most mmos years before the release and clear all the content? So this means we can blame them for the fact most MMOs are crap now?
Nice, way to pitch your guild as "we told them how to make their game, that's why it's not worth playing". Sure, let me run straight out and sign up for that! Destroying MMOs sounds GREAT for the future of MMOs... morons
not only do i question the actual involvement this guild may have had in any game i have to question any developer that would listen to a guild with a huge laundry list of failed games under their belt.
I just went to their website for the first time to watch their ego stroking continue.
one thing that makes me giggle. They are in the book of world records because for some reason they kept documentation from their founding (who the Hell does that?!). They won for being the worlds oldest running GUILD...
let me direct you to their front page:
"the Syndicate isn't a guild"
so by their own words they do not deserve the title.
either way, the only thing that actually upsets me is if they really are alpha testing games. They don't stick around in a game long enough to understand them. Yet they are a driving force behind the MMOs coming out? How the HELL can they be happy that they are killing the gaming experience for all of us? Really? They want to stoke their own ego over giving players a solid game? So in a sense they are the MMO terrorists, yay for sure a "guild" worth covering on MMORPG... Sorry, I'd rather have a guild who knows what they are doing over them anyday for testing.
hey my wife is the guildmaster of almost 600 people on WoW. does this mean we can start running news stories on what they do?
Why not? Sounds like a massive community. It's entirely possible that somewhere in that 600 people over the past couple of years some of them did something pretty darn amazing. Why not submit that as news?
Personally, I'd really be interested in her approach to managing a guild that size. What's the hierarchy? How is it broken down into manageable groups? What is the retention rate and what are some of the tasks regularly done to manage/increase the guild size? Demographics?
Ask her if she can do an article or blog here on that kind of stuff.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

i always kid around with her about how it's her second job. the guild has two main raid teams she oversees, not a day goes by where she isn't on vent sorting out some sort of problem or drama. She loves it though. they are not quite the number one on their server or anything, but they have hit the guild exp cap every single day
Deriums: That is definetly interesting, and something I can relate too. My girlfriend also runs our WoW section of our multi-game organization. She goes through the same stuff, always dealing and stressing about drama but she loves it.

I've contacted MMORPG.com asking them to allow other guilds a chance to share their opinions. Fair enough, I could skip any The Syndicate® articles, but that's not the point. The point is, another guild could take this article, I'd love that.

If that's the case, then why so many articles on The Syndicate? Surely they're not the only guild submitting their stuff?
In most cases, the poor guild leaders don't know anything about touting or messaging their guild and the good guild leaders are already using every bit of their spare time doing administrative and management tasks.
I'm hoping to hear from people like the two people mentioned a few posts back, but from the posts in this thread I get the feeling the only articles that will get any type of decent reception are ones about server firsts and leaderboard winners.

Just flicking through some of the "Syndicate" guys threads, and you're in quite a few of them defending the Syndicate.

Actually, you'll probably find me in a lot of threads where I feel people are blindly or hypocritcally burning something at the stake when they could have used it as a learning tool or stepping stone. That's a whole other discussion and I'd be more than glad to continue that in PMs rather than derail this thread.

People have many reasons to dislike this sort of coverage, as stated many times above, self-proclaiming rubbish isn't a good way to be seen as a good guild.
There's nothing to learn from these articles and thats why ppl are up in arms about it, and rest assure they are using it as a stepping stone alright, not to go forward though.
Taken from their own website :
The Syndicate is a guild composed of the best players in the online gaming world. Many apply, few are accepted. Although we have strict membership requirements, we also have extremely low turnover thus the guild has grown to be very large.
The Syndicate is a dictatorship style guild with Dragons as the overall decision maker.
We dont brag about content completed. We dont race other guilds to be the first to overcome a collection of pixels at the expense of our members. We maintain our believe in team first.. members first.. friends first.. while still advancing through end game content and having alot of fun while doing so.
How many contradications can you get in a few sentences....? All I see here is a bunch of obnoxious nerds that decided they were above all and made themselves dictators of a guild, spammed every media in search of attention whilst not achieving anything special at all, having a large amount of members is not an achievement, and they are trying to cover their asses by stating they are not after racing to be firsts, yet they are supposed to be the best players in the world.., in fact they are just a bunch of skilless individuals that zerg everything and pat themselves on the back for being so awsome.

Some people seem to think that the majority of people who, like myself, don't care or want to hear about The Syndicate (or any guild for some people) only don't want to because we are "jealous". Some people might be but I don't think that's the case. It's not like people come and bring up The Syndicate--many posters have never heard of them if it weren't for MMORPG--we see content and just could not care less. The reason posters like myself reply to these threads is because MMORPG needs to hear the community's impression.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

And if we gain anything from this thread, I hope it's more coverage of achievements and interviews with members of more widely-known guilds. Hell, even if it's an obscure guild, it probably would go over well if it was insight into politics, management, etc.
From reading through all this it seems The Syndicate, despite its countless successes, has done itself a disservice as a guild by detaching itself from the community it was born from.

I had never heard of The Syndicate before MMORPG.com started running articles on them. It was mildly interesting to hear about them the first time, but repeat articles and updates seem unnecessary and irrelevant. It seems I'm not alone in this opinion.
I honestly had only a vague idea of who and what the Syndicate was before this site, for some strange reason, started reporting on them. Does the staff here think they're some kind of weird, monstrous blob of hugeness that no other community can match? If so, then you guys are really misinformed.
'Reporting' on any gaming group is a complete waste of time, but if you're going to do it then at least do it on a truly massive organization. If you MUST 'report' on a specific community then at least do it on Goon Swarm, a group that is actually controversial, whacky and massive. Does the syndicate run a website with the noteriety of somethingawful? No? Then wtf is with all this wasted space?
Stop reporting on gaming communities. Nobody cares. If you absolutely feel the need to then at least report on a group that isn't going to be entirely shunned or is at least very, VERY minutely worthy of being talked about.
As it was commented above that The Syndicate "hasn't achieved anything in game" here is an achievement from today: The Syndicate was the World First guild to reach 25th level today 4/4/11. Other than those guilds who were unfortunately affected by the early Cataclysm Bug, we were the first to reach level 25 today (i.e. the first day you can reach 25 without having been impacted by the bug). We completed leveling at 6:00am EST today which is about 3 hours before the Goon squad which has been posting everywhere they were the first at 9:34am EST. If you refer the WoW Armory it confirms the "hours ago" for both and counting backwards it shows it was 6:00am EST (almost on the nose with the final turn in).
So... other than the handful of guilds artifically ahead due to the game bug at the beginning of cataclysm, The Syndicate was the World First to reach 25th in the minimum amount of "bug free" game time.
