no one knows for sure.one chap did some ghetto maths and came out with high = 2k.
Actually he went on a full server and counted the players and came up with the number which was 1900. Obviously not going to get a perfect result that way but 2k seems pretty reasonable.
Ona chap has a well kept secret, why is it only one chap that calculated this?
I'm tempted to reopen my account just to see if the world feels any more empty than it did a week ago. I think it usually takes more than a month for a subscriber base to plummet, but in this case, with the whole 1.1 world event fiasco, I don't know. They very well may have expediated things. Do they still have over a million subs?
They never had them in the first place, nor they announce them anywhere. What you probably remember is the following:
It's easy to get confused I suppose. The thing is, they never announced that they have a consecutive amount of 1 million active players subscribed into their game. Not yet anyway.
What does surprise me is that RIft still holds a tope 10 position in steam top sellers. It actually never fell below top 10 all this time.
I'm not that surprised tbh, the launch was quite polished and prepared, from what I've heard, very nice indeed for Trion, hopefully there's lots in store for Rift in the time to come!
Peter Griffin: you know those germans, if you dont join the party, they?ll come get ya
I love when companies do this.. If it were true it would be plastered all over the main web page.. I wouldn't doubt the game had a good launch but the one million subs..blah blah blah hype machine is getting old.. Hell this same thing was said about STO a month in and even a few other releases since wow...

Yep here it is about Star Trek Online, one million accounts, #1 PC game on Amazon. One year later, where are they now? Pretty meaningless when it comes down to it, like this thread I guess.
One only has to look at the " most popular games" section on this website to see Rift is popular enough to have over a million subs.
It's not a sure fire way to tell, but it's a strong indicator, it's based on how much talk and attention a game is getting. Rift is second only to WoW as far as forum discussion action. Rift would likely be second to none if it wasn't for WoW's expansion launch. That's the only reason WoW is leading the action in the forums..currently.
Well, how many will continue to pay is the bigger question.
I for one have hit 50, done all quests, 300 on crafts.. all I have left is the dailies (NO, I did not rush through content).
That would mean all I have left now is grind the same quests and dungeons and battlefields over and over again, to gain points for better gear.. no thanks.

Don't let this fool you. Mortal Online had more activity in the forums, and this was not an indicator of quality.

As stated...it's only an indicator.
I'll let the fact that I'm playing Rift and having a blast be my way of judgeing quality.
Rift has lead all forum discussion for 6 months, second only to WoW, based on millions of hits...that's a strong indicator that it's a popular game.
Popular games are a strong indicator of quality. You can't get hundreds of thousands of people playing a crap game...or keep them talking about it even... for months at a time.
And yes...I consider WoW to be a high quality game, though not for me...it's very well done and I can see why so many enjoy it.

The only issue I have with this is that High =/= 10k, med =/= 5k and low =/= 2.5k. We don't know what those indicators mean. it could be 1.5k, 750 and 375 for all we know. So until we get solid numbers from Trion, it's anybody's guess.
Last night I looked at the EU part of the server status (Tuesday 3am Central European Timezone) and some servers were still on medium. To be honest I think the "medium" mark starts even lower and is the broadest out of the 3-4 states. I simply don´t believe many people play here at 3am workdays.
On the other side when I logged yesterday (Monday 7pm) into my server "Granitstaub" and started a new character, the starter zone was still very busy... until I was booted out of the game around 10pm because my account ran out.
Still thinking about resubbing, because it was the first of my characters where I didn´t gimp myself.
I dont know if anyone saw the article over at IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158889p1.html) - but at the bottom it says all stats are provided by Trion Worlds. The very first one says "currently being played by over 1,000,000 people." I know there were some rumblings about the 1 million accounts at launch, but the wording of this definitely hints towards that many current subs.
Good for Trion if thats true.
during the big event on sunday night it felt like all of them were on my server
I doubt Rift has 1 mill subs. The game will NEVER be balanced due to the oh so clever "soul system", which is just a gimmick for the most part. I canceled my sub..found the game very plain and nothing about it popped out at me. The whole "Rift" thing became an annoyance after about the 4th day. The PvP is lackluster, the crafting is pointless. Just nothing to it.
I wish Xsyon had more players because I'd play that. I want to build my own house . It's too bad Trion is just ANOTHER copy cat "yes man" company. You'll see nothing original come out of this company so don't expect it. Just listen to the lead designer interviews..its' not very inspiring.
If it had a million subscribers it doesn't have that many anymore. The server population is down at least 25% just looking at server statuses. Not even half of the EU servers reached high today and they were almost all at high when I checked in the past.
I would venture a guess that the peak of most games is either right at release or directly after the first expansion. It will take a long time to see which one it is for Rift.

You do realize that EVERY AOC server right now has ´medium´population? Does that mean it is doing well? no, it means the devs set the ranges such that realms never go to ´low´status. It is a trick that every bad MMORPG does.. AOC did it, Warhammer did it, and now Rift is doing it. The fact that no server EVER gets to low even during offpeak times shows that they just fudged with the ranges.
It is the same marketing garbage that Trion did when they announced their 1 million accounts created.. which was basically people signing up for the beta (including multiple accounts).. but they made it sound like it was clients sold.
If Trion had sold 1 million clients, they would have announced it.
I would think all/most MMO's would be very profitable at 100-200k subscribers. I mean, look at the majority of them with that amount ... and they are still trucking along. The key is to get subscribers, and hold onto them.
I honestly have no idea how many Trion needs, but I am sure they will be profitable and secure if what I have seen so far in game carries on through release and the higher levels. There is a lot to do and tons of things to unlock/look for. They should easily get 200-300k+ people by release week ... if not WAY more than that.
People seem to forget big games like WoW (Big Themepark) EvE(Big Sandbox) did not realse with huge populariity they grew into the juggarnauts of the market they are today they were not born that way.

The game is quite well populated I find it hard to believe on my server there is any less then 2-4k people playing at a time.
Over half of the EU servers are low pop right now. I don't think they fudge the numbers at all, they just have medium threshold set pretty low in general. It is worth noting that a week ago when I checked EU servers off hours they were mostly medium. The population has dropped pretty significantly. Fewer than half of the US servers hit high tonight.
Yeah it is definitely normal. I have been watching Rift pretty closely just because I want to know if the solid launch keeps the players even though I consider the game pretty bland. It wouldn't have surprised me if it had good retention for the first 3 months or so just from the stability.

I am the same way. I hope Rift is successful, at least compared to games like AOC and Warhammer.. only so it teaches developers that they can´t release garbage and expect players to pay a monthly subscription fee while they fix glaring issues. Those ´fixes´come at the expense of new content. So not only were games like AOC and War pretty crappy to begin, they also had a dev team not focused on adding content.
But like always, two problems will get converged. AOC and War were fairly different from wow, but failed because of issues. Rift launched without issues, but it is so similar to WOW that there isn´t much reason to play it... I think there are enough people out there that hate WOW, but will play an exact copy, to keep Rift successful. 400k in a month.
Rift has over 1 million forum users, active,, inactive banned etc. There has been zero official population numbers revealed so far. To reveal any sub numbers (not boxes sold) this early into the game would be the death of the development studio releaseing them.

Server cap in beta was 1500, so i doubt it would be much more than that now, probably around 2k.

Pretty common turn of events for heavy-pve centric mmorpgs over the last 6 years. /shrug
Not that it's a bad game, but at the end of the day, many felt as though they've been on this ride again and again and again over the last 6-years.
