thats fine though because regardless of what they say i still see new people coming into our servers (lots of LFG for early dungeons), lots of people are in game at the lvl 50 brackets (even more nowadays than a week or two ago), warfronts popping all the time, and everyone in my current guild is happy with no signs of quitting or burnout (including myself).
there has been a lot of balancing going on the past week but everyone seems to have worked through it (including myself) and as a result I am now comfortable with many types of builds within my class (not just the 1-2 cookie cuttet builds that were prevalent pre-nerf).

and he came to the same conclusions: between 1500 and 2K as being the server cap. Riftfan is even a hardcore defender of the game.
It explains why people on so called medium and high servers still see few players around. It could be the death knell for Rift in the long run as 500 people on a single faction is too low to keep content alive. No wonder they talked about X-server dungeons at launch.
My guess is that with such low caps the game needed too many servers at launch and it will make it difficult to hold on to shard communities.
With these figures now known it is unlikely the game has anything over 500K users/subscribers.
It is one of the problems every new game faces. At launch, people play huge amounts of hours. Even if you keep 100% of your subscribers the second month, the amount of people online at any given time is going to drop because people will just be playing less.
So what do the devs do with that first month? Let queues get out of hand? or create more servers knowing they are going to be underpopulated ´next´month when people play more normal hours. Wow did not create servers very fast.. they went many months with queues. I think Rift took the opposite approach and released a lot of servers so there would be no queues.. but now they are going to have to deal with having semi-empty servers. This was one of the fatal blows for AOC and War.. even players that actually liked the game got bored because there were not enough other players around.

(Yes, I'm a notorious RIFT hater.) But I do want to see something make Blizzard think and if it's this game that forces a company with talent to use that talent. Woot.
Their site (riftgame.com), the official forums (@ the same site) still doesn't say anything about 1 million subscribers.
Google news for "rift 1 million" and similar things isn't pulling anything up.
The IGN thing was released on 4/1. I mean really.
I just can't believe they wouldn't make a lot of fanfare if this actually happened. The only downside to such a press release would be admitting that the previous "1 million accounts" release on 2/24 was creative wording (just like someone else still saying "12 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE BEEN METER SPAMMED IN HEROICS" or something like that).
OMG so true!
I just googled "RIFT isn't a giant pink duck with pink stripes and green spots" and go no hits!!! NOT ONE!
Bloody hell, and I thought RIFT was an MMO! Blantantly it's some kind of giant, hideously coloured water fowl!
I'm disgusted MMORPG led us to believe otherwise and even had the cheek to post imaginary screenshots and everything!!!

I'm calling shenanigans on your post. You Google anything and there's always, always at least one image of a half naked girl. I'm not sure what this says about human culture as a whole...but never the less it's true.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Yesterday MORE than half of the EU server where on high at peaktimes
No, yesterday at peak time less than half were on high. Today at peak time pretty much exactly half were high. A week ago 90% were on high and a few still would hit full. It is quite clear that a lot of people did not re-sub for another month, not that this is some sort of surprise either.
But it isn't just about prime time either, the lead up to prime time is mostly medium now when it used to be quite a few high servers even at like 3 PM EU time. I'd guess they lost at least 25% of the player base but they certainly didn't lose the kind of numbers WAR lost at release.

Well it doesn't mean a lot of people didn't subscribe a second month it could also mean that a lot of people are max level so they don't find a need to log on every day like they most likely were doing when they were leveling.
Rift having over a million sales is understandable since AoC had 1.5 million sales a couple of years ago. Now, can Trion hold on to those subs is the big question.

That would be reasonable if it hadn't happened at exactly the same time the free month finished up. It doesn't mean the game stinks or is a failure or anything, it is what it is. I just find it funny that some people are insisting that the game hasn't lost players when it is so obvious just looking at server numbers. It isn't so bad that they have to merge servers or anything.

I've taken some daily random samples, before the free month ended and afterwards. It wasn't the case that 90% of them were on high, certainly not the last 10 days. Also there wasn't any dramatic dip when the free month ended.
I also kept track of Xfire, Steam and Raptr figures for a couple of weeks now, just because the topic interests me, and also in there I didn't see any dramatic declines into the monthly sub period, so far.
Sure, you're right, no one should be surprised that at least a number of players didn't subscribe. But it isn't any steep decline or anywhere near 25%. At least so far. Still taking samples, we'll see how it progresses over the weeks.

If anything 25% is underestimating it. Again today looking at the numbers we are at all medium in EU when 10 days ago over 1/3 of the servers were at high by now. US has 4 servers on low when they were consistently all medium in the morning in the past. It has been a persistent and significant drop at all times of the day.
I dont know if anyone saw the article over at IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158889p1.html) - but at the bottom it says all stats are provided by Trion Worlds. The very first one says "currently being played by over 1,000,000 people." I know there were some rumblings about the 1 million accounts at launch, but the wording of this definitely hints towards that many current subs.
Good for Trion if thats true.
It's the buddy weekend thing and the free month hasn't expired for a lot of people yet. So, it's a bunch of BS, just like most subscription numbers. Mythic is the only company I know that ever release accurate numbers.
I logged into Rift today, my server was really busy, did an instance, pvp ed, quested, did some rifts, and the whole time there were people all over. Funny thing is, I never once thought, "I wonder how many subscribers this game has."

Searching for that tells me RIFT has over one million subdcribers.

That doesn't exactly prove anything either, maybe most people played like stupid for a month and are taking it slowly now (possibly forced by wife/boss/mommy)?
Sure, I would say that 35% that don't resubribe or so would be pretty normal or even pretty good for a MMO today but unless Trion releases any official number is it close to impossible to prove anything one way or another.
And there might be other reasons why activity drops for a while, like many sports events, holiday, great spring weather, blackouts or whatever. Or maybe the casual players don't play casual for the first month.
I would say a drop by 30-40% would be expected for any new P2P game but it is impossible to prove, at least yet.

Units sold or accounts created means f... all for an MMO. Only real subscription numbers AFTER the free month matter.
