I was definitely set on a smuggler but then I read a recent review on here from someone that got to try the game. They seemed to suggest that the smuggler was mostly the healer for the party and that dampened my enthusiasm quite a bit. Still if I remember right there are 2 sub specialties you can choose from so maybe one of those for smuggler is not so healer focused. But it seems kinda strange to me to make smugglers do any healing at all. In my mind they should be more of a rogue/scoundrel type of character. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how it works out.
I'm guessing you read about someone playing the Taral V flashpoint at pax east. They purposefully made the playable smuggler the healer of the group to show case it for people, since it was mainly the consular that had been shown as the healer up to that point. However you can spec a smuggler to be a stealthy rogue type that doesnt do any healing if you so wish within the same advanced class(scoundrel AC). As for smuggler not being a healer, if you think about it in terms of smugglers being on there own, outside the law, they can't always get to a medical facility. so it would make sense that they might learn some medical techniques if for no other reason than self preservation.
oh for anyone wondering about smugglers possible roles, this is from a dev blog on the swtor website:
Han Solo, Lando, Talon Karrde… There are plenty of different Smuggler personalities to be found in the Star Wars universe to choose from and this is reflected in the versatility of their available Advanced Classes:
The Scoundrel
The Scoundrel is not afraid of getting his hands dirty, as the ‘Scrapper’ skill-set has an off-hand Scatter Gun, a number of powerful (but not necessarily fair) melee moves and access to a Stealth Field Generator with various possible upgrades for a dramatic entrance … or exit.
The ‘Sawbones’ skill-set on the other hand offers ways to dramatically improve the Smuggler’s healing and support-related abilities, including access to the powerful Emergency Medpack.
And, if all else fails, the Scoundrel seems to have the uncanny ability to Shoot First, a very useful skill to have for sure.
The Gunslinger
Gunslingers are trained in a broad array of blaster-oriented abilities against both single and multiple targets and excel at dealing large amounts of damage from a safe distance. Their access to Illegal Weapon Mods may well give them the edge over an opponent insisting on a fair fight.
Their ‘Sharpshooter’ skill-set includes many abilities geared at improving their personal damage, improving the performance of their groups, and gaining additional benefits from cover.
Whether lobbing Shrapnel Bombs on nearby enemies or dealing increased damage for enemies Shot In The Back, the ‘Dirty Fighting’ skill-set is all about getting an edge over people who prefer a straight fight and helps to ensure that the Gunslinger delivers sustained damage to more than just one opponent.
The Shared Skill Set
Shared by both Advanced Classes, the ‘Luck’ skill-set focuses on improving many of the Smuggler’s base class abilities such as increasing energy regeneration in Cover or delivering some Very Critical Hits when using Dirty Kick.
As you can see from the small set of skills mentioned above, players will be able to customize their personal Smuggler experience dramatically by distributing skill points across the three available skill-sets, defining their character’s role as Smuggler as they see fit: Within the Scoundrel Advanced Class, a player preferring the traditional MMO healer role may spend the majority of their skill points training in the Sawbones skill-set with additional improvements to their core abilities from the Luck skill tree, or they could decide that a ‘Stealth Healer’ role with points distributed between the Scrapper and Sawbones trees might be the role they want to play in Star Wars: The Old Republic.
I could have sworn I just read something about them finding out Smugglers were having a rough go at it in game and they were going to buff them. It's one of these articles on the site I believe.
Looking at that list it seems that a one handed jedi is a tank.
Shame that.
Actually it isnt just a tank, it would appear that the single saber DPS and tank skills will share a tree. I suspect that you'll be able to grab the DPS skills from there along with from the shared tree (between both AC's) to have a worthy DPS single saber Knight.
Here Have a look at this Dev Blog, it'll do a far better of job of explaining it than I can.
ah thanks for that.
I mean, From a story standpoint it would have been silly to have single light saber Jedi's to be just "the tank". Everyone beating down on Luke and him wishing that he had a double light saber.
Also this:
Based on feedback from testing and requests from the general community, we reworked one of the skill trees on the Jedi Guardian Advanced Class to be focused on dealing damage while utilizing a single Lightsaber. Previously, the Guardian’s only available role was as a tank.

Yes I have decided my class planned my approach to max level in a week and you know what I don't think I will need to buy, as I have finished the game in my mind.
But then maybe conjecture kills game i think i will pick a random charachter at release and enjoy the game.

I will play all classes on both factions, however my main will be a trooper. Blasting Empire glow stick wielders into oblivion will be fun. And being able to tank is a welcomed bonus.

I think that was my post you had a look at.
For the healing side, think of it as a toolkit. I had tools to DPS, CC and to heal, and while I was playing I used absolutely all of them to stay alive, and to try to keep my group up. I know for some people that is a stretch, kind of like a Bounty Hunter with a healing spec, but if you consider gameplay is going to trump lore, it's okay, and if you accept that, its actually fun.
Have no fear though, the other spec is probably exactly what you want! Smuggler might still be the class that you are looking for.

That's one of the reasons I've been fairly impressed with the Bioware Dev Team so far. From what I've seen, they know what they want to do, but they do listen to some feedback, and have made appropriate changes.

im guessing you are thinking of this from last weeks friday update:
How are we making these decisions?
In addition to working through the feedback from our Game Testing Program, from focus groups and from internal testers, we are relying heavily on metrics gathered from every server to understand and contextualize the feedback we are receiving. We thought we’d share a couple of images from our metrics system – as images are worth a thousand words, after all:
Click the above image for a larger view.
This is a 3D visualization of death locations for one testing group on Ord Mantell.
Click the above image for a larger view.
Here is a movement heatmap and death details for a sub area on Ord Mantell, from an earlier test. This exposed, shall we say ‘survivability issues’ for Smugglers on their class quest at early levels. That’s since been corrected!
We also use these heatmaps to understand the flow of movement through an area, optimize maps and other guidance systems and identify potential locations for special content such as datacrons or unique enemies, which are specifically designed to reward explorers that go off the beaten path.
As well as all these metrics and testing feedback, popular topics from the community (such as the desire for a single saber DPS on the Jedi Knight) are surfaced by the community team and discussed as well. Starting a forum topic is never a guarantee we’ll change the game – but we are listening.
Ok I'm definitely feeling better about smuggler after the responses I've seen. Thanks for the info guys.
Every class except Jedi Knight and Sith Warrior will be able to heal, so I don't why theres so much gnashing of teeth concerning smugglers being able to heal.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
I was very much planning on an Imperial Agent main first but now I can't choose anymore :_:
BH, Imperial Agent, Sith Warrior, Smuggler and Trooper all are appealing in certain ways to me but I think I'll settle on a class which can use stealth eventually.
Props to BW for making classes so diverse by roflstomping the concept of purely trinity based classes. It makes it very hard to decide which one to go for

Bounty Hunter 1st, then Sith Inquisitor. After that I'm not too sure. Probably a smuggler to try out the republic side.

Jedi knight, then trooper
i am gonna play them all but not sure what ill start with.
either a sith inquisitor or a jedi counselor. i like to heal. So ill start with a healer class then probably pick a tank class.
probably sith warrior or jedi knight depending which side i start on with inquisitor or counselor.
On the prowl for Jedi Hippies..
BH for hire
You'll be able to tank with the counselor and inquisitor, too.

Sith warrior all the way!
@OP: nope, I decided to wait for trial.
Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...
Likely Trooper-Vanguard. For two reasons:
a) Finding groups is easiest as a Tank. b) Troopers are awesome.
Smugglers are very temping too, they look great/fun, can heal and stealth, yet they're not that popular(strangely).
I will avoid anything that ends up overplayed, however.
First, Jedi Counsular then Imperial agent, I want to check out both sides.
Sith Inquisitor or Bounty Hunter for a start!
I was very much planning on an Imperial Agent main first but now I can't choose anymore :_:

My brand new bloggity blog.
I've always loved playing characters that can stealth, as well.
I usually end up playing some type of assassin class in every MMO, so I think i'll play a smuggler.
I believe I saw some videos of one going stealth, but I thought a jedi could do that as well . . . so it's between the two right now.
Most look interesting but right now this very moment it would be Bounty Hunter and Jedi Consular, in that order of interest.
scoundrel advanced class for smuggler can stealth and shadow advanced class for jedi consular can stealth too
Well, then it only depends on which class I can play as a twi'lek. I know you can as a smuggler, but we still don't know on the jedi.
It would be a shame to pick my class based on race, but I couldn't imagine playing anything but .
