I'm on the fence with this game. I was even thinking of buying it yesterday and decided to wait a bit. I wake up this morning and voila: key give away! Haha, it must be a sign or something.

    1. With over  5000 keys left should tell something about this. People have been leaving after their 30 days are up or before and they are trying to get more in.

    2. Dowload was broken, at least for me it was. First try stopped with only about 80 Mb's to go saying there was an error. Second try tried firewall passthru, did the same. Third try, shut off AV  program and firewall and still died at same spot with same error about not able to download something. deleted all files after uninstall each time. There was no fourth. When they get a standard download/downloader going might give it a try.

I think it's more like they want to curb the traditional drop in players after the first month in an mmo. Everyone knows in sub based games that after the first "free" month that the number of players drop significantly. Trion knows this and are trying to curb that.

I agree there is an element of Trion wantingto make their game seem full. Free pass is a double-edged, though, yes you bolster the numbers...but only for a brief time. In the end Rift will go down as game that lacked that certain someting to break the 500K sub barrier at the 6 month mark. Worryingl, though, the ammount they have spent on advertising is really going to kill year one profits...

I recommended the game to a friend and got her a key for this weekend. Handing out 5k free keys to boost some numbers and attract new players, Trion should at least make shure the account management is available -which isn't since monday.

I read that folks can't login for days already, so neither cancel nor subscribe. Reminds me of the suspect downtimes of Mythic's account management when after 30 days it went down and people couldn't cancel.

This almost reminds me of the welcome back week ends of lotro.  Are they hurting for subs this close after launch, if so there in deep trouble already.

you know, damned if you do damned if you don't.

People scream that there are no trials and they won't buy before they try. So a company that is interested in bringing in new subs which bring in more money and keep the population vibrant creates a trial and suddenly it's that they are in deep trouble.

    Two things.

First off, keeping the hype and energy of their launch is vital. Waiting a year and then offering free trials when no one is talking about this game is just not the way to do it.

Offering the free trials so close to launch, when all those people who did try and didn't like the game so left, is a smart thing. There is still momentum, there is still energy to the whole affair.

Secondly, if they were a public company and I were an investor I would want them to constantly be brining in more potential subs. If they sat on their laurels and didn't do anything I would be very pissed.

These are businesses, not clubs that make games for players because it's cool. They have to bring in money, they have to keep their staff employed.

I was thinking the same thing more or less and could not have stated it better. So many times not offering a free trial has been a sign that a game has something to hide or the developers have "no faith in their product"....at least many posts I've seen reflect these notions. Now we have Trion...who has no problem with free weekend trials...and the game is suddenly DOOMED. Hilarious.
