I'm a dedicated mmo player (Guild Wars 2002-2005, WoW 2005- present), and I'm interested in playing Rift now since WoW is kind of boring me. Here's the thing though... When I switched from Guild Wars to WoW I was able to hit a 10 day trial for WoW and a 14 day for City of Heroes before deciding on playing WoW. I'm not exactly sure how companies expecting to gather WoW players expect to get me to risk paying retail price on what might be a bust? Are they just affraid of crashing their servers, or do they honestly think that people will risk buying a game that they plan on dedicating half their day to? So I dare Rift to get me to play it, because you want me, not because I want you. I'm bored of WoW, but that doesn't mean I'll stop playing it. I still have alts that aren't max level. The thing is, if companies don't start having an open trial...lets say...one month after release, NO ONE WILL EVER PLAY YOUR GAME. By open I mean I can go to your website, download your client, and play your game for a week. So good luck Rift I hope you prove me wrong about what I think your future is...

Dare TRIOn to get you into RIFT..? *LOL*
Just pick up the last day of the free weekend. They're handing out keys here on MMORPG.com...
But if you're already bored with WoW, I think you'll be somewhat bored with RIFT soon enough as well. I hear a lot of players already complaining about the lack of (end-game) content.
Anyway, best of luck in Telara with your last day of the weekend trial. There was one last week as well, so perhaps next week there's one too...

You must be wrong after all a "dedicated mmo player" would never make such a noob mistake.
I dare WoW to keep you.
He's got a point. This is not specific to RIFT.
MMOs should offer free trials as soon as possible so people can try it without shelling out 30 pounds or so.

I second that!
Not till their spam filter is proven to be working well please.
yeah I was sure I was playing mmo's at the end of high school and it was ff11 I was playing then. Anyways RL time isn't necessary to know. Like who actually remembers what month and year they worked anywhere if it's been more than say 4 years.? I know I can't...time just seems to all merge into one
They're out to squeeze as much money as they can out of people. Alot of box sales would be lost if they did a free trial right away. Paying for a game kind of forces you to give it a chance and stick with it for awhile.

Who cares if you play or not. Free trials should not be used until such time as the sales determine it's time.
Imagine you purchased a movie ticket and some people were given free passes. You go to get a seat only to find the good ones were taken by the free pass people. You would be pissed. Don't clog up the servers for those who paid.
Now by holding off on a free trial, you will get some impatient folks changing their mind and getting the game instead of waiting. Gamers can be like addicts. Even your post seems like someone who is hooked on gaming.

Well, there's already a free weekend so I'm not sure what you are going on about.
Other than that I agree with the individual above me who stated that they need to cater to paying customers first and then consider any trials.
If I owned a game company I would NOT give a free trial until I was sure that my paid customers were happy and that the servers were stable and that I catered to their complete enjoyment of the game. Once they were well on their way I would then consider the best way of getting new players in without giving away the farm.

Oh Guildwars isn't and never was a MMORPG, but alway's has been a online roleplaying game.
Agree with the GW part, their FAQ even claims it's not an mmorpg.

This arguement is really tiresome, "free players" are being "shouted" by trion because they are infact, potential customers and therefore trion will brave their connection expenses in the hope they will invest. You on the otherhand dont own anything anyway. your just renting a space just like everyone else, you dont own the building, so you have to get along with out discriminating.

Why should anyone pay for a game if it's not ready to be shown to the public then?
It's like a trap to get people to buy your game, and when they realize it's unpolished /incomplete/just plain boring (not talking about RIFT specifically, just MMOS in general) the player realizes they already paid money, they SIGH and keep playing, might as well. Wasted money on it already, might as well wait out the first month or something.
I am just being Melodramatic here, haha, but really I do think MMOs should have a trial. Either you are ready or you are not.
I had a chance to do the Rift free weekend. I (being an MMO player of at least a few years) found it very interesting. Within the weekend of playing I found myself losing track of time. The combat and questing system were quite interesting. The game has quite the "hook" in it but it still feels like "Just another MMO" to me. The graphics, even on the lowest setting, were immersive and pleasant. There was a fair deal of spam in the channels, but I figured it was because of the free weekend.
I would say I am mildly impressed, I am a WoW recoverer, and found it very similar, without being a clone.
My best suggestion is to keep an eye out for the free weekend, download it and try it.
Worst case scenario: You don't care for it, delete it and be done.
Best case scenario: You end up paying the sub fee and loving it.
Most likely: You'll enjoy it for a time, perhaps even invest days/months/years into the game, then grow tired of it.
I do not feel that Rift was released too soon, it felt polished. I feel that it needs more polishing to set it apart from "Just another MMO".
Dude, It's just a game.
Where does this attitude come from, try before you buy it? I've been playing games for almost 30 years, you pay your 40-60 bucks, you play it, and it either is fun or it sucks, but no refunds, no returns.
Besides, there was an endless beta, did you miss it?
You'd swear they were asking for your first born, you want to play, pony up the cash or wait for the free trial, usually 6 months or so down the road.
Trion owes you nothing

Sounds like OP already wants to play rift and is looking for a handout.
Normal games you can generally return or tade-in.
40-60 dollars is a lot of money (for some of us) for a non-refundable game. Besides, I said before I was being melodramatic, and yes I was in the beta. I also said I wasn't talking about RIFT specifically, and just MMOs in general. Also, I always play demos or try out a friends copy before i play a game. Most of the time.
My first "MMO" was The Sims Online, and suffice to say I realized I made a grave mistake when I realized it wasn't worth the 9 bucks a month, and I could not return it or trade it in. :P
I thinmk I gave it away to someone...
I hear where your coming from, And i agree that a free trial at an mmorpg launch is not to be expected. and shouldnt be considered the norm.
But regardless, Trion did offer one.. Are you saying i should feel bad because i used that as a tool to decide on a purchase?. Rift is $90 in my regon, Its a substantial about of money.

Speak on brother!!...I feel you. Back in my youth a free trial was going to the Lionel Playworld , Toys R US or even Montgomery Wards and waiting for the kid in front of you to finish up at the demo case of whatever console was hot at the time...then pray they have an open box of the game you wanted to try.
Anyway point is mute Rift does free weekends- look out for them.
Plenty of people are playing RIFT. This isnt an issue of what the future is, TRION proved you wrong as soon as you hit post.
Besides it being a free to try weekend...
