Theres a problem with the second option in the fact that there is no lobby. image

since there will be lots of portals used through the map.. that reduces the exploring interests of players, so since GW2 already planned on doing it... why not add mounts? even flying mounts i should say.... at least is more fun that opening map and teleporting everwhere without actually moving ourselves through the areas

This is a horrible, horrible poll.    Where's walking?

That's like having a poll with two options 'I like GW2'  'I beat my dog'.

That's not a good 'Hey, how many people actually like GW2' poll.  Your poll isn't well done either. :(

Teleporting everywhere is the worst thing in an MMO and should never be the case, unless they implement a system where you must visit each spot to teleport there and you can't do it unlimited times all the time.

It completely destroys immersion, hell take a look at WoW. Nobody travels to dungeons anymore because you just instantly warp there. One of the dungeons in Cataclysm looks pretty cool on the outside, but there is a good chance half the playerbase hasn't even seen it.

Here's to hoping that GW2 doesn't allow warping everywhere and turn it into post-LFG Tool WoW.

The poll makes a very good point.  We're being told we can't have mounts because we do not need them due to teleporting... So I just wanted to see which of the two, if given an option, people would choose.

For everyone who hasn't bothered to read up on the teleporting in GW2 let me lay it out for you.

    http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Waypoints

    Maps and Travel

Q: Since you mention the fee for waypoint travel is small, why have one in the first place?

Ben: It allows us to establish a balance between exploration and convenience. It also provides a minor, but highly repeatable way to drain money out of the economy. You don’t HAVE to use them, and in some cases it’s better to save your cash and just enjoy the run through the countryside.

Q: How many waypoints and asura gates will the map have?

Ben: The real answer would be “As many waypoints as it takes to make the map awesome.” Currently any normal map has between 10 to 20 waypoints. Asura gates are in the major cities and some other story-specific areas. Right now that feels about right.

You cannot teleport anywhere and everywhere. You can only teleport to certain points and only once you have found those points. The number of waypoints in any given map may change during development.

... okay, so in my theoretical 'I like GW2 and it has no flaws' poll, you beat your dog? :(

... seriously.  Still a bad poll.  No.  It doesn't make a good point, because everybody who wants any other more reasonable option is denied the choice.

It means you're ONLY getting 2 people voting.  People who like mounts, and people who want to prove a point so badly they'd be willing to say they'd beat your dog in order to prove you wrong.

You do have a good career ahead of you writing polls for politicians though. :/

edit:  Actually, this poll literally offends me.  This embodies everything I hate in bad polls.  I hate when figures are manipulated like that, no matter whether or not the end results are to agree with me or not.  I'd rather find out from a poll that everybody disagrees with me, rather than somebody using manipulative questions to get a biased answer.

opening waypoints still kills exploration.... no one will ever walk and explore GW2's gorgeous maps.... i hope there are sprint skills with low cooldown timer to use it like mounts :p

I can't help but feel that the poll options are worded to solicit the desired response. Also, the pool needs an 'I would like mounts for dynamic events only' option.

In all honesty, which themepark mmo isn't actaully a lobby-system game?

I'd rather have both. Mounts have been a standard for mmos since UO. Even though players had runes to get to where they needed to go faster, it didn't take away the desire to want a mount. I don't understand the reasoning behind not including them other than not wanting to devote resources for designing, animating and/or time restraints. Either that or ArenaNET just HAS to "buck the pony" by going against another traditional mmo standard.

What I find strange is the GW1 didn't need them, therefor GW2 doesn't either argument. If they are deperately trying to differentiate themselves from GW1 by including as many traditional mmo features than the last time, what keeps them from going that extra mile in including mounts? I mean they went as far to include vanity pets. Which by far are even more useless than some who believe mounts are.

This is true, however riding long distance on mounts is a good attempt at masking the obvious :p

Yeah sure, no one will ever explore the map in order to discover all the hidden dynamic event chains. (¬_¬)

Of course mounts are fun; who doesn't enjoy moving outrageous fast on a tiger, motorcycle, or dragon. However, I just could never see myself needing a method of fast traveling in tyria. This world just doesn't need it. Rather than mounts being a necessity, I would like to see more options. Instead of saying, crap I'm level 26... I need to go to the blue mountain zone, we'll be able to walk around and get a feel for what is going on. Then, we have the opportunity to gradually move toward a new adventure. I feel like mounts call for an extra amount of rushed adventures and ultimately missed content. Truly, keep mounts as an underwater experience if anything at all. Flying in limited zones wouldn't be the worst thing in the world either... I wonder if they thought about incorporating flying fights with their new  z axis : D yes i know unrealistic, i can ponder though.

I would support mounts only if they offer other gameplay other than a speed boost

  • Dream_ChaserDream_Chaser Member Posts: 1,043

    @Master10k

That's actually a good point, I wonder if perhaps people don't realise though that there are hidden dynamic events which can only be triggered by exploring, going to a certain place, and either uncovering something or interacting with something. (Of course, all players can then join in, but it's the sort of dynamic event which could go for months without discovery, and the person whom found it would get to feel pretty good about it.)

    @arenasb

I completely agree with you, 100%. This is why I support mounts as dynamic event things, something you hop into which changes your skillbar for the length of the dynamic event, giving you mount-related skills, but not just a cosmetic speed boost that you use to roam around the land.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

I would probably say yes for mounts, some might not like it, but features are not imposed on anyone, communities can opt out of using particular features, individuals or friend groups can still go adventure together and explore dynamic event chains, still very possible.

Some applies to the teleport system as well. These features are simply for aethetics and convenience purposes. As to he person talking about how half the player population haven't seen the outside environment for the dungeons, simply, it is their lost, they pay their money and doesn't want to get their worth, they might like their gear grind, what force this upon them?

Having more options is usually a good thing, as long as it isn't imposed on everyone to be used.

this poll does not really matter, the reasons for mounts not being in the game are fairly good reasons.  The arguments against waypoints being in the game versus mounts are rendered moot because this is GW2 (as if any other reason mattered in the first place).  The RP contribution of mounts or forced travel is something I can sleep soundly without.  My heart bleeds every time I hear about walking not being in the game...on your behalf, not mine.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

This is just a horrible poll! I think another fair way to word this like the OP did would be the following.

    Do you like mounts?

Option1: Of course I do, what sane rational human doesn’t?

Option2: No I do not, I rape animals and kill babies; why would I want a mount?

No mention what so ever of having to find the waypoints to use them, plus making it sound like the game is lobby based like the first GW. Also no mentioning in the OP of the lore reasons for waypoints, like the fact that a miniature Asura gate was created by Snaff that allows people to teleport to places it is attuned too.

  • ZzadZzad Member UncommonPosts: 1,401

I didn´t vote the poll because i didn´t like none of the 2 options.

I love mounts in games...that´s for sure....

But I´ve played Guild Wars many years and the game system is so diferent to any other Mmo you dont really need them at all.

Yo don´t go from a lobby to instant action like OP said in the poll-....the world is full of action... you actually have to walk into dungeons and so...so there is no lobby waiting...

You just teleport using map/portals....I know...it sounds weird if you come from a MMo like WoW...

but it works perfectly fine in GW :)

have you played Guild Wars before?

They used that system of teleporting and game was awesome...

You dont have lobby waiting to get inside a dungeon...you have to walk fighting your way to that dungeon... with no mounts it´s even more intense :)

Yes u can teleport betweeen outposts & cities....but that doesn´t affect the fun.... you have to move in the world to get to places... the fun is out there...

Its just a diferent kind of Mmo ;)

Yep! For one, there are no horses in Tyria. This has been a hotly discussed element for quite some time, and for another, mounts are viewed as an inefficient form of travel. If you can move from point to point with teleportation in seconds, why then would you head there with a mount that could take you months (in game time)?

Mounts aren't an aspect of the Guild Wars 2 Universe for much of the same reason that we don't use mounts in our modern day world: They found a better alternative.

To have mounts or not to have mounts...

In a game where movementspeed is a very important part of the game.... the combat itselves and the AI of the surrounding lands is negatively influenced when people would be mounted.

Espescially the PvP part.... i just hated it when people mounted in WoW battlegrounds... thats because my fond memmories od DAoC PvP

The only fun part of mounts is showing off your latest mount to your friends...

I am sure there will be forms of transport availalbe eventually in some events/PvP but they should work more like what we are used to in FPS games...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
