Don't they realize that anyone who wants the WoW gameplay isn't gonna look for such a small piece of crap game? They'll just go with Rift or WoW if they want PvE.
I totally agree.
All these small game companies trying to compete with the big dogs by making the same product are just plain suicidal. There is absolutely no way they can surpass the player-base of WoW or the quality of Rift. It makes more sense in a business standpoint to provide an alternative style. This way anybody tired of the same ol' can try something new and original.
The only thing that might pull people towards this game instead of the big games is the Roman style. Sure, there are people who like ancient Roman themed stuff over Traditional Fantasy, but that's a pretty small demographic to be relying the future of your entire business and the careers of all of your employees on.
Small game studios need to think competitively if they expect to stay in business.
quality of rift? sure its graphically amazing. but looking deeper, where do you see the quality? the soul system breaks the game balance wise. that's not very quality like. the gear is barely appealing, and most look exactly alike. that's not quality, no where near WoW's different tier's quality looks. the quests are the same old stuff, at least WoW started taking measures to make quests more fun with BC/Wotlk/Cata with phasing and dropping bombs from a plane etcetc.
what makes rift brimming with quality?
also as far as a 'smaller' company making the same kind of game as WoW. if done well enough and correctly WHILE ALSO fixing the many mistakes that such a game as WoW has made and continues to make(to point out, the pvp system and the fact that pretty much no one does old raid content anymore and thus is just a waste of space in game) then yes, a smaller company would make a huge success and name for themselves. they just have to pull it off well enough.
I play beta and no way shape or form is this game even close to a WoW clone.
I have to agree, I question whether the OP has actually played this. If you really feel the need to label this game like people seem to, it is an MMORPG clone. (Like custom PC's are reffered to as "IBM Clones") This is the genre folks and some basics (core elements) are going to be the same or similar. There will be action bars, quests, WASD movement, ect ect.
Now Im no game developer, and perhaps my imagination is limited but I dont see how different you can make new games in this genre. Rather than people saying, "Its another WOW clone" (which btw is getting old. fast) People could start providing real ideas or heck, start making your own game :-)
It looks like the OP started the post based on a 10 minute video done from the previous development company and based all of his opinions based on that.
It amuses me to no end when these kids come in here with only World of Warcraft as a point of reference and automaticly assume that anything with quests, dungeons, and loot 'must' be a WoW clone. Blizzard didn't invent any of that. They just spent the most money shoving it down everyone's throats. WoW was an EQ clone and EQ was a D&D clone and so on and so on. As far as innovation and new ideas I think G&H is doing pretty well. I can only think of one other game (SotNW) that has a similar group style system so the core gameplay of this title off the bat is different.
I have played probably almost 100 different MMOs over the last 15+ years and my wife, who playes them as well, once commented on how it isn't fair how quickly I pick them up. I responded, honey, these games haven't changed in years. I am not really having to learn anything new. Each new manifestation is a little different. That's called progress. Look at the automotive industry. Does everyone run around claiming that every car is a Mustang clone? Sure some releases are a little better and maybe more widely received than others but each and every new release is a little different and usually a little better.
Reminds me of WoW and a dumbed down Age Of Conan combat system.
Meh, WoW reminded me of EQ designed for 4 year olds but hey, people bought it. I was not aware that AoC had a squad based combat system where every player levels up, equips, and controls several NPC minions.

I think he may have been on about the animations in the combat.. but no the combat is nothing like AOC.
I beta tested this game for a few weeks when the beta went live again after heatwave took over.. For waht it is the game does well and i do wish them luck. Im just not into these kind of games really, i stuck to conan for quite a bit as the combat system was somthing new and the pvp was good.. but i wanted more.. I am now back with Darkfall but thats just the style of game I like.. the Majority of the MMO players in this world like the themepark style of game its somthign they can just sit back relax and play with no issues..
The question is whether or not the game in its current form will attract enough revenue for these features to fully materialize. Like I mentioned in a previous thread, history hasn't been kind to developers that have launched games on empty promises, and players have grown less likely to invest time and money into a game in the hope that their favorite gameplay feature will materialize in the future.
Adhesive33,
...I think it's worth noting, I just had a demo of the new Quest Guide feature, which requires you to turn the hints on for each quest and when you do, it warns you that you will get less XP & fewer Rewards if you use the hints (you can tell it to never warn you again!
There's a 5-10% penalty for using the quest helper hints (XP & coin). It should be in a patch this week.
I think bonus rewards for people who quest without having their hand held is a wonderful idea, and it's your team's willingness to explore mechanics like this that really gives me hope for the future of GnH.
Heatwave inherited a themepark, and it's unreasonable for us players to demand the game be something it's not, yet you guys have shown a great deal of receptivity toward our complaints, and with an obvious understanding of the communal benefits of features many would associate with a sandbox game, you have been willing to explore gameplay mechanics well beyond what GnH was originally designed to include. Thanks, and good-luck.
BTW, it's refreshing to see a game that honestly aims to grow its player-base gradually over time, and I'm glad you shared that bit of info with us.
I can't say I blame developers for following in the footsteps of WoW. First off, it takes some serious money to make an MMO, and the investors look at WoW, and then the rest of the pack. Doesn't take a financial whiz to figure out where the money is gonna go. It doesn't help matters that the games that have tried to break the mold all fell on their faces. While a lack of quality might be the real reason, many investors aren't going to look that deep in to it, they're just going to see the quarterly reports, and extrapolate from there.
It can't be worse than World of Lordcraft. They copied (basically) the name, the entire user agreement, the entire terms of service, and the entire game layout. It's. Just. Terrible.
Well, slowly but surely they have been improvign this game.
the new character creation options are very welcome.
It's slowly getting into shape. My fear is that they will launch it prematurely as there is still some wonkiness in the game. But again, it's better than the very first beta by perpetual and it's better than when Heatwave first acquired the property.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
So I saw this game today on steam and decided to check up on it, and found this quite the interesting conversation. I find the developer comments especially cool, and am hopeful for the housing system being a pre-cu swg architect. However, I find it tough to justify a $50 box price. I would definately jump in a 10-day trial based on what I've heard, but likely not spend $50.

Well to be fair right now it's $39.99 on Steam which obv includes a free month so not quite $50. Im on the fence about trying this. The game sort of came out of nowhere and frankly im hardly living under a rock when it comes to the MMO scene. I dont think im going to be able to justify spending a dime on it until i can find an independent video review of the game which so far i havent been able to.
I love it when people cry about quest helper "breaking immersion".
Quest helper is probably the most true to life facet of videos games. It's exactly what you would do in real life when looking for a destination.
No one ever says, "I heard that Mr. Yummy's Chinese Restaurant is awesome, we should go!" And then just walk out the door in some random direction until you get into the general vicinity and then start asking people.
You pull up google maps, or enter it into your GPS, or call your friend to tell you where it is. You get directions before you go. Has your immersion with real life somehow been severed because you know where to go? Quest text should be read and NPC's should be talked to because they have interesting things to tell you, if they don't, then that company should have hired better narrative designers.

let these studios make thier WoW clone if they like, they will be on life support in 4-6 months anyway, sooner or later there there will be a studio who suddenly see the big picture that we gamers have seen fore years.....why not do a none wow clone lets ge back to basics and see why UO,EQ,SWG,DAOC was so good that people for the first time in gaming history forked out monthly payment for playing a game.

Great comparison there between games and life, that is a good way of relating to quest trackers. The best quest design of course would have the quest giver and/or other NPC's indicate where you should go without the use of a quest tracker, but of course the quest tracker is ther to help you, just like GPS, mapquest or a phone book.
Also, people complain about quest trackers yet the option is usually available to turn the thing off, so why don't they do that instead of complaining? Oh, I forget...people love to complain.

Hmm, coulda sworn it was 49.99 last night. perhaps they changed it overnight or I just misread. probably the latter.
People keep referring to simliar combat mechanics and quests as wow clones when there not, there just traditional mmorpg clones.
I generally tend to classify something as a wow clone if it has a quest grinding system, easy level cap, bind on pickup, minimal crafting, and raid-oriented end-game, which classifies a great majority of the mmos released in the past five years. You can argue the semantics (after all combat mechanics are fairly ubiquitous nowadays), but I imagine that when people say wow clone they have a similar overall design in mind.

Actually, it's a 5-10% BONUS if you don't use the quest help system. Just wanted to clarify

As cloned as it is the theme is very cool and its a beautiful game.
Obviously a lot of us are just sick of the same old crap, but the game is very nice.
