One interesting thing that many people still don't get or are ignoring (and that I have mentioned before, but I think it's worth mentioning again) is that the players are mounts. If you sheathe your weapons in Guild Wars 2, you run faster, and the charr even run on all fours! Essentially, it's a speed boost without the nonsense aesthetics, and the game areas have all been designed around that amount of boosted speed.
The open world is there, the exploration is there, anyone who doesn't realise that is being amazingly myopic, and teleportation doesn't take away from that. You can't teleport anywhere you want from the start of the game, after all, you have to discover each and every single waypoint, so that means that you'll be doing a lot of running around. What does it avoid? Well, I'll tells ya!
Wallet-wringing.
Y'see, MMORPGs like World of Warcaft are designed from the ground up to suck your wallet dry, so every single second that you spend travelling from point A to point B is more money for the developer, potentially an extra month's subscription. This includes long, monotonous flights, too. Just take out those long, annoying, boring flights out of WoW and the game suddenly becomes a lot shorter. So, with no wallet gouging going on, no mounts or slow flights are necessary.
In an MMORPG where you'd normally have to run across the same terrain for the 500th time on a mount that seems painfully slow (because you've seen that content so many times), you're going to end up wishing you could teleport. And that's exactly what ArenaNet are counting on. You'll enjoy running over the content areas a few times, but teleporting stops it from getting monotonous.
Teleporting completely breaks immersion, no way i will play! Like back when I used to play table top RPGs, I had a couple GMs who would summarise a whole 3 day trip up in one short paragraph! No way! I quit those games right away, I much prefer the GM who would roleplay out the entire journey and the players could rp the trip! That was immersive!
No one likes the "Okay, 3 day trip back along the road you came. Pleasant weather, and easy traveling. No encounters..."
Next thing you know GW2 won't let me make the CE thief that causes angst in the party! Those are so much fun! But GW2 has thieves, right so I am good....
This teleportation is going to continue to make Guild Wars and all games they put out, not feel like an MMO in my opinion. I for one want a large open world to run around and explore. Can't really get that done in a fun way by teleporting. I think an open world with mounts and mounted combat would be pretty sweet.
You have a narrow self-defined definition of "MMO" then. I'm sure it's been said before, but if you wanna walk, you are more than welcome to. You'll have to explore areas for them to show up on your teleport-map. How many times are you going to "re-explore" an area anyways? It's not really exploration, if you've been there 10 times before.
Actually... I never gave a definition of the term "MMO". I'm just stating that in my opinion.... the word "massively" in MMO makes me think of a massive world. My experience of Guild Wars did not give me this feeling on any level as you just teleport to where you need to be and a bunch of instances. World felt small. May be fun for some, just not for me.
I agree that I probably wouldn't want to walk the same areas over and over again. I'm simly stating that with a larger world, and a mount, I (I, not everyone, just me) have much more fun. I was able to get this feeling with some other games I played, such as Eq2 and Vanguard. Didn't get it with GW.
I understand a lot of you like the game, but there's no need to get so defensive when someone gives their opinion. While I don't agree with you, I respect your opinion.
First of all, teleporting will charge a small fee (small, but still a fee) and some players trying to save money (or not) won't want to pay that small fee... There's a reason for mounts... Also, they WANT players to explore Tyria, they WANT them to get out there and find new things around every corner... Players who WANT to do this are going to NEED mounts. It's only logical. Nobody is going to want to explore on foot (which, of course, would take forever.) they'll want to move quick so they can discover new things quicker.
P.S. This game is not PvP based. ArenaNet has already announced that... several times... They even said PvP would be instanced.

That said, you could play how you want. Sometimes in a game like WOW I want to explore and travel around. Nothing is stopping me. I could use a flight path, or a flying mount, but I don't always.
The key is to give players the option to play how they want, without removing options from others. That is exactly what is happening in GW2. What you are suggesting/advocating would provide LESS options for players, rather than more.

May I ask what the difference is, in game terms, between pulling a horse out of your pocket, and getting a speed buff while not being able to attack, and getting the exact same speed buff by simply sheathing your weapons? Why is the graphic of the horse/mount NEEDED? I just want to understand the opinion that mounts are neccessary.

So your against teleporting then cause it breaks immersion.

And your against mounts as well because they are not neccessary. So we are supposed to run everywhere? I hope there is only one land mass then cause I'm going to be pissed if I have to swim across an ocean to get to more stuff.
I'm for teleporting and no mounts ever. If the game world is designed around a particuler travel system and the lore supports it I'm ok with it being in game. Also mounts are usefull if your playing a game that has quest hubs that will send you to different areas of the zone multiple times to pretty much waste your play time. I want a game that is a time sink not a time waster.
I actually feel like GW1's world is huge, even with the teleportation. I appreciate the teleportation because it would take FOREVER to travel from one end of the world to the other. And when you get somewhere, the world itself feels big. Maybe it's all the mobs in the way, but I know if I've traveled a zone and a half because of some mission, I'm on a wiki trying to figure out if there's an outpost I want to unlock. I don't want to make the run again if I don't have to.
I think mounts are going to make the world feel small. At least with teleportation, you have to experience the zone at least once on foot. With mounts, you will be able to breeze through the content that's new for you as well as the old.
I also think mounts come with at least a certain amount of baggage that has to be worked around, they're not strictly a positive. Two friends might want to group, but one has a faster mount than another, it's annoying. Or what about how people with mounts generally try to ride right through content and hope they don't get dismounted. Or will they enable kiting or griefing of dynamic events?
I appreciate that people want them for status or to show off in town, but that's a problem too because you can't just have a town only mount. But I think people don't appreciate all the options that ArenaNet is going to provide, whether it be through hard to obtain armor skins, fashionable town clothes, minipets, perhaps even illusions like GW1 (though those were temporary they could be permanent items)
I think mounts are ok, but I'd prefer their teleportation system and I don't think mounts are a good fit in it. I don't really care about immersion, though at least they've tried to address that in some way by claiming it's Asuran magic. I think people are used to their other games where mounts are essential. In WoW, if you want to explore the corner of the zone, you can, but you gotta ride back or hearth back to a town. In GW2, it's gonna be going on a walking tour in one direction, and if you don't find anything, you just port back and pick a different direction. Or your friend across the world wants to group and boom, you're there.
I think it's gonna be fun the way it is. Give GW2 a month, and if you find after that you're missing having mounts, then petition for them to be included.

For me, lacking mounts just breaks immersion. Haven't all societies in the history of the earth, found a way to use a large animal for transportation when it was available? Take off the GW2 Tshirt, put down the GW2 mug, stop staring at your GW2 wallpaper and just try to be objective for a minute. Doesn't it just make SENSE that these people would figure it out? Or are we expected to believe that none of the varied races on this planet ever figured it out?
Now, pulling a magical, full sized horse out of my pocket can break immersion too, so I'd like to see that handled differently as well. If you buy a horse, or steal it, you have to keep track of it. You have to come back for it when you tie it up outside of town or leave it at a stable, or leave it outside a cave, or on the shore of the lake.
I think a lot of people aren't really considerng the big factor immersion has on the success and playability of a game. The short sighted attitude that whatever Anet decides must just be the best possible decision is rediculous. They're not perfect, and in this case they are showing it.
I'm still planning on playing the game, it's not a deal breaker for me. You'd have to be a fucking idiot for the inclusion or lack of a mount be a deal breaker, whichever side of the issue you find yourself on. That being said, it's one strike against the game for me. It's one bit of immersion that I won't have, and I can only hope that they are able to make up for it in other ways.

They would have "bothered" with the horses because it likely would have happened before they developed their magical-tech far enough to have teleports. And they wouldn't want to rely on another race for access to them. And teleports wouldn't be everywhere. And teleports would be expensive to use. And... etc.
I would like to add that MMO's don't use weapons properly also. I mean really it wouldn't take 15 whacks of a sword to kill a rat so if they arn't going to do that properly then no thanks!
Rats have high evasion.

You have a point but why would you continue using mounts once teleporting came about. You going to keep using cars if it's ever possible to teleport in real life?
Sarcasm does not transmit well on a digital medium, but the fault in this case lands on the poster, I was purposely being hard to read. For clarification, the against teleport post was sarcastic. If I feel like traveling over land, I will do so. If I need to get somewhere in a hurry to hook up with a teammate I will teleport. I was purposely being over the top. I prefer the ability to teleport when I need to, and enjoy being able to walk when I want to. Options are always good.
As far as the mounts, I never stated if I am for or against them. I was just curious about others opinions as to why they are needed as opposed to a system where you travel at the exact same speed by sheathing your weapons. To me I don't care, functionally I see them as identical. As far as flavor they both have their pluses and minuses. I just personally don't see a difference in gameplay, but I could easily be missing something, so that was an honest question. Obviously people have strong feelings there has to be a model of you on a mount, maybe it is more than that. I personally am ambivilant to it. I don't care either way, because no matter what they are going to design maps that takes you x amount of time to cross, no matter what your speed is. Whether it is a mount, or sheathing your weapons what difference does it make? Honest question, because I don't see a gameplay difference. Flavor, yes.

Teleportation in this game only takes you from a portal in one city to a portal in another. What about all the area inbetween? Seems silly to waste your time walking after you've gone through all of that effort to teleport.
As for real life... we have airplanes, but we still use cars, right? They're cheaper, for one. They're more versatile. Airplanes can only take you limited places. And even with all of our tech, people STILL ride horses
@JesseBFox Ok I understand after rereading your post. I was thinking if I ever had a GM do that to me I would slap them up side the head. I like RP but if the GM knows that there are no encounters and nothing is going to happen and makes me rp a 3 day trip anyways there getting hurt.
Edit cause I don't want to make another post right after this one.
Ok according to you anyone who has posted there opinion that they don't like mounts are not being objective and of course is a fanboy. Did it ever pop in your head some people just might not like mounts and are happy to see a game with out them.
1. Personally, I would enjoy seeing mounts in the game because (me being a player who enjoys exploring and discovering new things as well) I would want to move faster while exploring so I can find things faster. I wouldn't want some "speed buff" where somehow I run 3x as fast or whatever, I'd want something beneath me pushing me along that actually simulates the faster speed, rather than just somehow running faster... That'd just look stupid to me... Also, I think some mounts look cool, so I'd feel awesome. xD But I really do enjoy mounts. I don't think you should be able to just magically summon a mount, or as some say "pull a mount out of your pocket", but I think that having a mount that you bring from a stable in your home instance would be cool. Also, when you get off it, it stands there waiting for you to return. I also think that combat in PvE on a mount would be cool, but no mounts in PvP (can not summon mount, so with the instanced PvP that GW2 is going to have, this wouldn't work anyway). Also, I think a mount should have health, and keeping it well fed would keep its health high until it gets hungry again, and leveling increases overall health. I also think that you should be able to take care of your mount and have to keep it well fed, groomed, etc., or else that would affect its overall speed as well. That would be a good mount system that I feel players would enjoy. I know I would!
EDIT: I think that there should be much variety in mounts and also a dye system for mounts (ie: dye fur/scales/whatever, armor, etc.)
P.S. This. Isn't. Guild. Wars. 1. Get over it.
2. Let me ask you this: Is a mount REALLY going to make or break a game for you? Does it really matter? I would like to see mounts in the game, but if there's not, oh well. And to the people who don't want to see them (just because there's fast travel so they think there's no point... >.>), does it really matter if they are in it or not? If you don't like them and you just want to use the fast travel, just don't use them. Us, who would enjoy traveling and exploring, would use them, you don't have to if you don't want to.
I really couldn't care either way. Mounts are usually a little novelty item that keeps me interested for a whole of 5 minutes, and then I just get sick of them. Especially when you walk into a city and see hundreds of people on mounts... and a lot of them are the same one you have. It really just gets annoying. The only reason I use them is for convenience purposes, but a lot of the time i wish people would just get the heck off their mounts... ppl will mount up just to walk 10 feet
So if they are not neccesary for travel, then I don't really think it's a big loss... and I wish future games with mounts would at least turn them off in cities, because it really does drive me crazy. Or make a better mount system instead of the click to magically summon one.

I agree. I hate walking into towns and seeing everybody on their mounts, and seeing the same mount I have/the same mount over and over... I think a dye system for the mounts would work great as well. As for the city thing, they could probably work that out.

Ah. I see by this post that you have done absolutely no research on the waypoint system in the game.
Asuran Gates can transport you between the 6 major cities.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
I'm pretty sure human society wouldn't have bothered with the whole horse thing if they had found ways to teleport to other parts of the world using magic.
They would have "bothered" with the horses because it likely would have happened before they developed their magical-tech far enough to have teleports. And they wouldn't want to rely on another race for access to them. And teleports wouldn't be everywhere. And teleports would be expensive to use. And... etc.

See: Earth, Fallen.
Or make a better mount system instead of the click to magically summon one.
and there's also freedom of the developer to make the game they want to, whether people complain or not.
I agree. I hate walking into towns and seeing everybody on their mounts, and seeing the same mount I have/the same mount over and over... I think a dye system for the mounts would work great as well. As for the city thing, they could probably work that out.
True.
Ah. I see by this post that you have done absolutely no research on the waypoint system in the game.
Asuran Gates can transport you between the 6 major cities.

Waypoints don't. Waypoints allow you to teleport while in the world and they are specifically placed to encourage people to go out into the world.
