I am not one to buy into the hype machine, I realize that most MMOs are terrible and just rehash what is already out there, the fact Rift actually sold more than 100 copies is a testament to that.
I'm mostly positive on GW2 though, they really do seem to be doing things the right way and understand the flaws in the genre. I'm not completely sold yet because I'm more than a bit worried about the complete lack of world PvP and the fact that real time combat in an MMO might not actually work as advertised. AOC is an example of a game that touted the 'new' combat system yet it was a complete and utter failure. GW2 could be the same situation and I won't know it until I try it.
I think GW2 has almost revealed everything since I started following it the most professional I have seen. There's hype but there's also very precise information delivery. As for the combat, we really need to see PvP-GvG to establish how it works, but at least in the PvE it looks good, players reports from the demo usually compare: "Did not enjoy this game... probably because I played it after GW2"
"Yea shall go forth into the world and look upon all games as equals.... except GW2 because its awesome. Go forth and make it known, GW2 will rule all and is thy salvation from the dreary land of MMOs."
I started off as a fan by default since I still love GW1, so I was predisposed to like the sequel. That being said, I wasn't paying much attention to the development since it still seemed like a far off dream rather than a reality.
The hook was the Manifesto.
I hadn't seen anything like that before from a developer before (but I'm noticing it pop up elsewhere now) and it did a great job of demanding my attention. The artwork was stunning and the in-game movies were superb. But the message said that this is what I've been waiting for and that's what made me focus hard on it. Now I'm just another drooling fanboy waiting for my chance to get into the new and improved Tyria.
As a sidenote, what turned my friends from what they're playing now to being ready to drop everything at the first sign of a release date was the in-game fight with the Shatterer. It universally blew them away. Me too, but I was already sold.
As many others have mentioned , I also started out interested because of the Manifesto. Interest kind grew slowly from that until the PAX 2011 panels pushed me into the fanboy catagory .

When you do something right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
For me it was the week I was kidnapped by Anet. They sat me in a room with Colin who proceeded to smile at me the entire week which got kinda creepy after awhile. Colins smile told me things though so it was alright. After a week they put me in a van and told me to buy GW2 or else right before they pushed me out at 30 mph. Best week of my life so far.
I liked the idea since I read about the game the first time on the GW forum, that was a rather long time ago. As a GW player I have been looking forward to it all the time and little have changed for me.
But I do have to admit that the thief vids really made me drool, I have been waiting for a game that have gameplay like that.

Like I've said before, the skill Unload just gives me a braingasm for some reason.
So, there are a lot of people on my daily forum route that I've noticed have gone from extremely skeptical or even downright hostile towards the game, to extremely pro-GW2. Getting straight to the point, I'll tell you a quick story. I initially wrote off Guild Wars 2 because all I saw was a pretty trailer, and I was tired of pretty trailers. I was pretty much sold as soon as I saw that GW2 was at the top of the hype meter, and viewed the website and all the content that was contained within. The mentioned event occured about the same time as the Warrior release video.
So, my question to you - did you start off as a hater? What really made you dig in to Guild Wars 2, but not in a "favorite mechanic" type of question, more a "What was the breaking point?"
Thanks for your time, have fun with this =p
Nothing about this game has changed my mind. I started out with ambiguous feelings towards this game, and so far nothing Arenanet has shown us has moved my opinion one way or the other.
I feel it will turn out ot be an adequate MMO but will not be revolutionary or genre changing as some of the most extreme fans are hoping it will be.

The extreme fans believe it to be the messiah, but most regular fans also believe it will be a game changer for sure. I be one of the latter.
Nothing about GW2 has changed my mind but i have also been a huge fan of GW. The open world design of GW2 excites me and no monthly fee is a plus. Ever since i started playing GW i always wished for another version of GW with no instances and the wish came true. My mind was already made up about GW2 even before it was announced.
Whether or not it will be revolutionary, one thing is for sure. It will definitely be one of very few mmoRPG's worth playing. (tack on no monthly fees, and it jumps pretty much to the top)
((for those of you who do not know what an opinion is, the statement above is an example of one and only expresses MY views of the aforementioned Guild Wars 2))

Says the extreme RIFT fan who bought two copies lol.
I remember seeing the trailer the first time and finding my lower jaw resting on my keyboard in a puddle of drool after the third time watching it.
But when I learned it wouldn't have pvp servers, but WvWvW in designated area's and no separate player factions on each server competing with eachother, and about Anet's 'player conflict avoidance' conviction I became ...
*coughs* ... slightly skeptical.
The lack of mounts and dueling which I learned about later hasn't done much to take my doubts away, sadly.
Still it has a lot of redeeming aspects which will make me buy it eventually:
- Awesome graphics, artwork and character animations
- Potentially fun WvWvW, despite awkward lore twisting to allow your enemies being enemies because they are from another dimension rather than their blasted ancestors almost eradicating your species.
- Meowhead will play it
- Probably very fun combat gameplay
- PVE focussed on Dynamic Event's: playing in a more dynamic world seems something every mmorpg-fan must try sometime. (Should be better than WAR's Public Quests which were kind of ok'ish in my book but RIFT's system looks a little too much copy-pasta to me).
- FFA minigames
- Cool looking races. Asura obviously having some Rattus Rattus genes somewhere in their genetic code and are prone to bite shins. I like that the "huggable race" has an evil touch. "Gnomes with a bite".
I just have to play a little scoundrel like that one day ...
We disagree about a *cough*fewthings*Cough* but I love the asura
At one time I was skeptical but what turned me was the Mist. World Vs World Vs World = a 3 way server matchup in a HUGE area is the closest thing to DAOCs RvR I have yet to see.
Dueling will be in eventually.
And Open PvP imo is overrated and nothing compared to 3 way pvp.
i started as a lover and will remain as a lover until i play it myself. The only downside for me is Anet's preference for teleporters over mounts (personal feeling here) but im sure it will not hurt the game at all and i still love it
And Open PvP imo is overrated and nothing compared to 3 way pvp.
I enjoy the DAOC PvP model as well, don't get me wrong. I just find PvE without the threat of PvP extremely boring, I'd like them to add a specialty server or two that have both. I don't play through an RTS campaign first when I get it, I jump on and try to multiplayer. When I buy a new COD game I jump on and play online first and then do the campaign at my leisure. MMO is no different, you need the PvP to break up the monotony of the PvE.

Ok then, let's say that GW2 has PvP servers but on those PvP servers there are no Dynamic Events (since they revolve around cooperation) and a completely different personal story (since it revolves around cooperation). Will you play on the PvP server over the PvE server?

There is just as much cooperation on PvP servers as PvE so I fail to see the point of the question. There would be no reason at all to change anything on the PvE side of the game. I really doubt they do this so I'll just have to live with leveling up a lot in the mists and ignoring a large part of the content because there really is no way to make NPC AI smart enough to keep PvE fun by itself for me at least.

And how exactly will you get 5 races working together in DEs, with open world PvP switched on. Especially when someone on the opposing race could just get in the way of your projectiles, or haplessly wander into your meteor shower, thus igniting a fight. Also due to the nature of the dynamic events, you'll just get a lot of this going on, where a bunchof Humans could be saving a town from pirates then a bunch of Charr just roll in to gank everyone.
Yeah, truly sounds like a fun, immersive, cooperative experience.
For me, I got excited about GW2 when I first started reading about dynamic events. While at the core PvE is still a grind (honestly, what about mmos isn't a grind), the new presentation is what turned my head. No trinity only solidified my excitement.
ANet is just looking at doing things a bit differently, and their ability to take a risk is what is refreshing. My gut feeling is that their gamble is going to payoff in a big way.
Somehow I think the game cannot live up to the hype people generate. Even if GW2 is going to have naked babes dancing in cages to metal, there will be disappointed people: "But I thought GW2 cures cancer!"
I agree
I enjoyed GW1 and would buy GW2 blind based on the fact that its an ANET game
And Open PvP imo is overrated and nothing compared to 3 way pvp.

I know what you mean, but after lvling a number of toons through wow, that feeling went away.
PvP before lvl cap is never balanced and the fights I had on pvp servers never ammounted to much other than getting ganked or ganking.
The rare example is when we would raid small towns or mess with people in capital cities.
I didnt have a turning point. I love GW1 and from the moment they announced GW2 with a more open world, I was looking forward to it. All the information and gameplay videos only made me more excited about GW2. It is starting to look a lot better then I anticipated.
Im especially looking forward to the combat system. They got rid of the 100s of different skills for each profession and took the next step in how skills interact with each other (shooting arrows through wall of fire, to make them flaming as example). And how protecting is even more about positioning yourself then in GW1.

Somehow I dont expect that they will put duelling in as option outside some kind of arena or minigame. Anything that can be used to harass ppl with (duel window popping up while you are fighting some mob) they tend to avoid.
You will be able to go 1on1 with no problem in bar brawls or other kinds of mini pvp games (that give you special skills for the situation ) in the outposts. They always seem to have some clear goal in mind with any form of PVP.
But with the professions as they are, its probably all about team vs team. WvWvW is an exception, but then thats PVE and PVP in the same area.

The breaking point for me, I guess, was Rift sucking, ie when I realized I didn't want to play Rift I started following GW2 more closely.
