For me, lacking mounts just breaks immersion. Haven't all societies in the history of the earth, found a way to use a large animal for transportation when it was available? Take off the GW2 Tshirt, put down the GW2 mug, stop staring at your GW2 wallpaper and just try to be objective for a minute. Doesn't it just make SENSE that these people would figure it out? Or are we expected to believe that none of the varied races on this planet ever figured it out?
I made a forum post for people like you that think ever world ever created needs people riding mounts, so here you go straight from another thread my humble offering to your logic.

The discussion in this thread has made me start wondering about something, I wonder how many here are Star Trek the Next Generation fans? Now you might be asking what does that have to do with the topic at hand. Well I would answer give me a second and I will explain. One of the main cruxes of this thread is that it is logical for everyone to use mounts. Because it is part of our history and most of fantasy uses mounts, so therefore everyone should use mounts. Now here is where Star Trek comes in during the first season there was an episode titled “Justice”, where the crew visit a planet called Rubicun 3. On this planet there is a humanoid race named Edo that run everywhere, OMG they do not use mounts. Just for fun I decided to do a parody of this thread with a fan talking (he will be called MMO fan from here on out) to Gene Rodenberry while they were filming this episode. And just so everyone knows I am going to use satire, so please do not take everything literally.
The scene: The away team beams down to the planet and runs into two Edo that are running by one male and the other female. They share a few words, and then they decide to move the conversation to a public meeting spot.
The Female Edo says “Let’s go and we can talk more, with others”
The male Edo says “Maybe they cannot run!”
One of the members of the crew says “We can Run!”
MMOfan: “wait wait, what do you mean the whole planet runs everywhere? Where are the mounts? Ever civilization has developed the use of mounts; the Edo should ride not run everywhere on the planet! It is logical that they would use mounts, no way would a world choose not to use them!”
Gene: “Why is it logical that they use mounts? I have created a universe with billions of planets and millions of forms of life! Why do they all have to use mounts?”
MMOfan: “Logically they would have developed the ability to use mounts, and since there is no reason why a whole population would not use them, they need to have mounts. Plus the history of humans and ever fantasy and Science fiction book has some form of mounts, so this world should have them to. There is no logical reason why the Edo should not have mounts; they would not just run everywhere!”
Gene: “I do not care what everyone else has done! This is my world I created it, and the Edo run everywhere. They have made the choice to not use mounts.”
MMOfan: “If the Edo does not have mounts it is a huge step back in the design of this show, the space ships and everything else is cool. But logically the Edo would have mounts; they would just not run everywhere. By not having mounts you make your world less believable, after all people just running and using a transport to go everywhere is just silly. The Edo needs mounts or people will not like this show, no one is going to believe that they just run everywhere. “
Gene:”Why is it logical for ever planet to use mounts? Couldn’t there be a planet that learned how to tame animals, and then decided to not use them as mounts?”
MMOfan: “No! Logically they would use mounts, everyone uses mounts. Check history, and check all the books out there. There is no valid reason why people would run everywhere and not use mounts. The Edo is not realistic and it will hurt this show”
Gene:”Yeah that is the reason why the ratings might get hurt, on no the Edos are running everywhere, we must stop watching Star Trek. We must make the director give the Edo mounts, so they world can be more logical. *Gene shakes his head in exasperation then mumbles to himself* “I give up”
The End!
I call this play why ever one must use mounts no matter what, and Gene Rodenberry must die for not allowing the Edo to ride mounts. How dare he make them run everywhere, it is so illogical. I hope you all enjoyed it! (by the way this is satire incase you did not catch it, or catch me warning you at the top of the post. I do not mean everything written here literally. I have nothing but respect for Gene and what he accomplished in his life.)
Also people keep in mind that there is a lore reason for being able to teleport anywhere you have been; Snaff created the miniature Asura gate before the events in GW2.
I must of missed that the first time around. That's pretty funny and about right. Plus the whole point on they should of figured out how to tame things for mounts is based on there actually being things to tame. What if there isn't anything that can be tamed? Also I do not want Anet to go out of there way to make new creatures just to have mounts because that doesn't always end well. 3 words for you: Blood Elf Chicken. Did they throw darts at some concept art and come up with that? Cause never in the entire time I played my BE did I stop and say gee this chicken really fits this race.
I also have another thing to share: You have to find waypoints, meaning, you have to find portals for you to be able to fast travel. I'm going to want a mount to explore + also find these waypoints. And every time you use them, you have to pay a fee. What if I don't want to pay a fee? Mount up.

I've mentioned this about a billion times, now, but let's go for a billion and one! :P In Guild Wars 2, the players are their own mounts! If you sheathe your weapons you break into a sprint and get a speed boost, it's a mount but without all the aesthetic braggy nonsense that accompanies actual mounts. So if you feel that need for a little extra speed when going from A to B, then sheathe your weapons!
What a lot of people don't understand is that a game is designed around movement speed, so when you put your weapons away and start running, you will feel like you're giong fast and that you're getting from place to place fast, because that's how it's designed to feel when you're running, just how WoW designs the game to feel faster with mounts. Except instead of grinding, everyone immediately has access to the same 'mount' and no one needs to grind.
theres nothing wrong with having mounts in fact GW2 should have mounts leave it for people to decide what they want to do.. just give them the choice of having a mount or not .. you want to use it go ahead if not then dont.. i think GW2 staff has more then enough time to implement that before it comes out without any problem..
Page 24. I'm sure this could just go on until GW2 actually comes out. So many points of view and there all for nothing because in the end GW2 will not have mounts for the simple fact that there are other systems in place.
Page 24. I'm sure this could just go on until GW2 actually comes out. So many points of view and there all for nothing because in the end GW2 will not have mounts for the simple fact that there are other systems in place.
And in the end, you're not ArenaNet, so you really don't know.

They stated that there are no mounts in the game and no plans in the future for mounts. That may change, but for now mounts aren't and will not be in the game.
There's also the factor that mounts are already in the game, insofar as ArenaNet wants to include them. (Billion and two! >_>)
Really, if they were going to include mounts as an aesthetic, visible thing, then they wouldn't have given the players an automatic speed boost buff whenever they sheathe their weapons. It's logical if you think about it. Having mounts of different speeds absolutely does not, can not, and never will make sense for a game that's not centred around grind, since it just means that they have to space out content for those with faster mounts, and then people have to grind for them, blah.
So the only solution is to keep everyone on the same speed mounts throughout the game, and to make those feel fast from the start. And they've done that. Mounts are in the game! How do you 'mount'? You sheathe your weapons, and there, you're mounted. You're not on a horse, you say? Well, ArenaNet aren't doing that, they apparently don't like the one-upmanship that surrounds visible mounts, so instead you sprint. But 'mounts' are there in the most mechanical sense.
@Vespura: So, it boils down to simple aesthetics, you want a big hulking beast between your legs, rather than the way GW2 is doing it at the moment, where you run faster with your weapons put away (Which goes against all CS logic. You should run faster with a knife of course!). There is nothing wrong with that opinion, just was curious if that is all it was about. BTW, Fallen earth for all it's flaws has a pretty cool mount system which has a lot of the things you mentioned.
@Dream_chaser: Save the billion and three, I think they get it, they just want the status symbol mount, or some like Vespura want a cool pet/mount system where they take care of their mount and there is more to it.
Personally I don't care if it's a mount that makes me move fast or putting away weapons. But, I can see a very good reason why Anet would not want to put mounts in. Development time, which translates to cost. In the case of GW2, I truly believe Anet is different than most other companies, but usually there is only so much money to go in to a game, and so you decide. If money is put in to making mounts, that is money taken away from another aspect of the game. Anet, however, I believe has a ton of breathing room financially due to past success, and are not feeling the pressure of finances yet. But that does not change the fact that it would cost them a good bit of cash to change from their system of simply putting your weapons away to sprint to a full fledged mount system. Especially if you consider they would want to do it "right" and make it more than simply whipping a horse out of your bag of horse holding.
I doubt no mounts will truly cause people to not play. I find it much more likely that it could contribute to some people not playing, but not being the deciding factor. i.e.: some people prefer the big beast between their legs.

I'd like to see the source for this, because I just typed in "There will be no mounts in guild wars 2" into google and nothing came up. I also looked on guildwars2.com and the guild wars 2 wiki, in both of the news feeds -- nothing on mounts. I honestly don't think they're far enough into development yet to announce anything on mounts.

Why would you want mounts? In other MMOs they're only for faster travel and small storage. Also in GW1 you never really saw anything you could possibly mount with the exception of a bison. There is not one horse in all of Tyria and frankly you don't need them. GW2 has teleport and fast map travel to get to places. Honestly, if you aren't going to play this game because of no mounts you are a moron to the highest degree.
You cant roll dodge on a mount. You cannot wield a weapon to the full extent on a mount. Please , if you really want to ride something, ride in a car.
In FFXIV there are no mounts, Fast travel/teleports everywhere, When your weapon is put away you run faster. People are still begging for mounts and airship travel en masse. I'm sure it will be the same for GW2.

Ah. Alright. Well, that's good enough for me. However, they did say no mounts at launch so there is a possibilty that mounts may be added later down the road... Though I do doubt that. Eh, I'd like to see mounts, but if there's not any, not a big deal to me. It won't make or break the game for me.

I'm sure somewhere along the line, players will continue to beg for mounts, and ArenaNet will either satisfy them or disappoint them. The choice is theirs, but until they do, there were always be mass amounts of people still wanting them.

FFXIV is different than GW2 though. This might have changed but what I remember is that you can only teleport to a few certain spots (mainly cities) and the cost of teleporting was extremely high and your teleporting currency recharged at an extremely slow rate forcing you to run everywhere. In GW2, waypoints are plentiful and cheap. The asura gates are also free and teleport you between the 6 main cities.

How many times do u here players whine that games arent immersive enough? That they arent really worlds anymore. That expoloraction is a thing of the past.
These people should be happy there are no mounts. Even with teleport and speed buffs seems to me not having mounts will make these things better. And the game world more immersive.
Its funny people say that want something and when a dev tries to give it to them they cry about it.

My question would be this: If they designed the game around using a certain speed, how could the speed buffs not be enough?
Let me ask you this. When playing Fallout 3 (if you played Fallout 3), did you ever feel that you needed a mount? Guild Wars 2 is not a sandbox game, it's a themepark game, and thus they want people to be able to quickly get from one set piece to the next, so you can't compare it with stuff like Grand Theft Auto, because it works on a different principle. You need to compare it to games which are also themepark games.
If you didn't feel that you needed a mount in Fallout 3, then you probably won't feel like you need a mount in Guild Wars 2, the speed boost will be fast enough to get you there in an appreciably quick time, that's the whole idea. I think that some people just don't know how to think about Guild Wars 2. They keep thinking of it like a sandbox game or a traditional MMORPG, both of which have wide, open spaces to accommodate various speed mounts (from slow to fast). Guild Wars 2 is clearly more all packed in together, much in the way Fallout 3 was.
Essentially: There will be no vast, open, empty, MMORPG-like plains to ride mounts across.
(Changed example to Fallout 3, as it's more common and there's more of a chance that it's probably been played.)

I like mounts. I like having many visual choices for mounts.
However, mounts DO compress the size of the game world and the perspective and speed do detract from immersion in the world.
Look at WoW. Northrend is actually a beautiful and well designed world space, but flying mounts completely kill the effect. Even fast ground mounts kill the effect. If you actually take time to explore only on foot, the experience is very different.
Land mounts are great for large, sandbox games, but for smaller worlds, skipping mounts entirely might be for the better.
That'd be like telling people with low-end graphics cards that no, they can't play this game.
Consider: If ArenaNet gives into the demands of mounts (touch wood they won't), then people will demand shinier mounts, so ArenaNet will provide shinier mounts, then people will demand shinier mounts, and ArenaNet will provide, and soon you'll have mounts with all sorts of nonsensical graphical effects floating around them, making them look like a mobile fireworks factory.
A few of these is not bad. But if you have a dynamic event with ~100 people in it, then that means ~100 mounts parked nearby. That's going to kill the framerate of anyone walking near enough to the event, it'll be ridiculous. That's why mounts in WoW disappear, which is annoying because it makes them look like pokemon critters. I think my point is that no matter what you do, mounts are going to seem ridiculous, and therefore they're best left out of the game.
Besides, as I pointed out, the game is being designed for X speed. Not X speed OR Y speed OR Z speed. If you do that then you have to artificially inflate the size of areas for Z speed mounts, and those on X speed mounts have to go across a boring, massive expanse, something they weren't doing at lower levels. See: WoW.

See: WoW.
Seriously, mounts are a curse.
