Well the problem is, the article is preaching to the chior on this site. I would dare say many posters here only believe a review if its negative. I mean look at all the complaints we see when they write a positive review? It doesn't matter how many other positive reviews will corroborate that, if MMORPG is positive about a game, then its an "obvious lie".
In truth, people really have made up their minds already about how they feel on the game, and if just this one negative review can back up their claims then everything will be justified for them. It doesn't matter if the reviewer is an FPS player, or that the site is some obscure, somewhat unpopular site. They played the game and said they didn't like it and thats all some people need to hear.
We had haters and complainers of SWTOR even when all the previews were fantastic. Even at PAX recently there were 3 hour waits to play the game and tons of people walking away happy, but its this 1 review they'll keep coming back to. Just like how 300 million dollars is the exact amount they spent on SWTOR - thanks to a debunked claim by a disgruntled employee.
Fans will never win when arguing with these kinds of people.
"What’s most disappointing of all is how empty and lacking in personality the worlds of The Old Republic felt. It didn’t matter whether we were dealing with ganglords on Hutta or seizing gun emplacements on Alderaan; we never saw any of the pizzazz or colour which we’d expect of the Star Wars franchise. There was none of the hustle or bustle you’d expect of a thriving interstellar universe, merely same-faced folk standing in an under-populated shell of a world. Only in an MMO is it possible to feel so alone."
Uh oh
I wonder how other site's overall impressions weigh up against this one. It is surprisingly negative compared to everything else we've heard so far.
edit: looks like this guy is kind of anti mmo's in general though, not sure if that has influenced his perception. Also he admits later on that they were only with 50 players on the server so having more players around might change that empty feel.
Is he anti-MMOs in general? I didn't see that. The reviewer in PC Ganer UK was supposed to be anti-MMO but it tunred out he was a big EQ2/WOW/AOC/EVE etc game.
Didn't PC Gamer just release a fairly positive review of the game?
Yes this puzzled me aswell, after reading the PC Gamer review it left me wanting the game there and then, as it did with my guild mates who also read the same piece, did the OP even read the PC Gamer ?
There is only one thing i can say to people still thinking SWTOR will be any good : Dragon Age 2
I certainly hope they are putting more effort into SWTOR because Dragon Age II felt like they slapped together a game around the new combat enging and majorly skimped on world design. Reusing the same areas and maps over and over and over gain really killed my enthusiasm playing DAII. The story pacing also sucked, jumping years at a time was not immersive or very cohesive, but it is a convenient way for them to stage DLC, none of which I will buy. I basically want to finish DAII now so it doesn't become a wasted purchase.
I still think SWTOR is going to be fun, but then again Rif t was fun...at first. I think I am becoming somewhat jaded about the game industy in general.
I think the bottom line come down to...is Bioware more concerned with making money or making a game when it comes to SWTOR.
Still,a few of my guildmates have played the game and said it was a lot of fun so that impression will stick with me the most in the months until release.

Those are very valid points and I share them. I don't however think that they invalidate the good parts of the game.
I mean, reusing the same places (which was horrible) also reminds me that oblvion and morrowind reused the exact same pieces for most every dungeon.
How many of us who played those games don't know what I'm talking about when, in say Oblvion, you would enter a cave an immediatley recognize that cave part that swirls up in the corner with the stalactites and stalagmites where more often than not there would be a chest?
More time could have been spent on DA2 and the story telling could have been a bit more seamless. Still the story was more about one man's/woman's small contributions over a period of time.
I hate to say this but for all the yelling of "we want new, we want different" how many people are prepared to experience story telling that doesn't follow the tried and true "start small from the beginning, build to a climax and then the epilogue". I think a good many people would be shocked to experience some of the ways story could be created. How about one way where the main plot point happens at the beginnign and the rest of the story is all about how that happened?
Or non-linear story telling a la "The last year at Marienbad" (which is an example that I frequently use for non-linear story telling).
go see that and not come out a changed (or more perplexed or angry) individual.

To add on to this though, people are saying how this is an unbiased review too, but just a little research on their own site shows, this guy is anything but unbiased when it comes to BioWare games.
"what really kills it is how terribly boring it is. It’s dreadful, really; duller than an inflatable knife - and it’s not just simply tedious either. Jade Empire’s banality can be divided into two separate levels of boredom. "
" Specifically, the games that immediately predate Jade Empire are ones from entirely different genres: Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights. It’s not unforeseeable that Bioware deliberately attacked a broad range of different settings and genres as part of a risk-offsetting strategy or somesuch – if Fantasy isn’t working, maybe Sci-Fi would.
With that in mind, look at all of the games Bioware has made since Jade Empire; Dragon Age covers Fantasy, Mass Effect and Star Wars the Sci-Fi.
Obviously I’m not the only one who didn’t think Jade Empire didn’t work very well."
"Before we go any further though, a clarification is in order; I don't actually own Baldur's Gate 1 (and its packaged expansion Tales of the Sword Coast) - they belong to my brother. I nabbed them from him when he stopped playing games as much as I did.
In fact, let's move from clarification to confession: I never really likedBaldur's Gate."
Just some additional information here. I think the point was proven before... I just find this rather interesting.

Yeah, it seems the guy is more in tune with shooters (judging by his cover statements, let's also not forget his one hit kills with sabers statement). The above just adds to that.
Personally I found both DA:O and DA:2 left a lot to be desired. I'm more of an Elder scrolls oriented player myself, IMO more playability options trumps great story any day of the week. Still I was a huge fan of KOTOR as well as ME 1&2. I'm remaining optimistic until TOR is in my hands and on my screen.

So basically the guy seems to be a troll when it comes to BioWare in general. No biggie, even the PC Gamer UK article ended up saying that BioWare did right by the game in the end of the article. One bad review after literally dozens of good - excellent reviews tells me that this guy seems to have an agenda. On top of that ALL the BioWare games he seems to hate have been the ones I absolutely love.
I will say this though, anyone that thinks about BioWare games in general will probably agree with this guy in regards to SWTOR, the vast majority of the rest won't. Such is life.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
First it was the PC Gamer article guy not liking this much at all and now this. I don't know but it sounds like good first impressions are not happening here. I am starting to think that 2012 will seem more likely for The Old Republic.
Except that there have already been a WHOLE LOAD of good first impressions.
This is the problem here.
People have staked their sides right from the outset and essentially, intentionally, ignored what has come before so they can fix themselves to news that supports a view point that they have had right from the outset.
And if you are saying that you didn't have a viewpoint right at the outset and this is the first "impressions" news you have seen then take heart: there have been many write ups that have already given the SWToR experience a hearty "thumbs up".
What going to happen is this. and you can set your watch on this.
Players on both sides are going to gather whatever bits of news and footage support their sides right up to launch and argue themselves hoarse. Many players are going to give the "I doubt this will make 300k sales" arguments. Probably because they can't possibly imagine that anyone else couldn't possibly not agree with their opinion. Oh, incidentlaly the top two movies of last week were Rio and Tyler Perry's Madea's big happy family. go figure on taste.
It's then going to sell way over a million easily from very eager people who are already chomping at the bit to play this one.
You are then going to get the same polarizing reviews after the launch. Whether or not SWToR is going to be able to keep those subs is another thing but I suspect it will be a hit in the short term.
This is going to be a polarzing game and I will also state that the people who are probably going to get the most enjoyment out of it are not going to be the old school die hard mmo gamer types or the people who are bothered by cut scenes in games.
I understand not everyone is going to like the game but it is starting to sound like the AOC saga all over again before launch. So much controversy and we aren't even in an open beta yet. This does not bode well for them and I like Bioware alot.

But AoC had really large issues.
Even though I have seen some mention of early game play where there were technical issues, most of the criticism I've seen for SWToR comes from either not liking the way they deliver quests (the story telling/voice over/dialogue wheel) or that the game is not revolutionary in that they haven't done away with mmo conventions such as "we still have to collect x of y or destroy the confibulator".
As much as I would like every quest or action to be huge world changing and impactful I can easily understand that sort of undertaking just being beyond the scope of what is possible given that they would like "not' to have the debunked rumor of 300 million and that they would like to release it this decade.
I can't say whether or not this game will have lasting impact but I don't see the same issues cropping up as much as they did in AoC.
AoC had all sorts of extremely in your face issues. Which by the way, they still haven't fixed the Herald of Xotli hair bug after all these years.

I can positively say I will not be playing this game and save my money for a better game.
I mean come on. Static mobs. Lightsabers take forever to take an enemy down. Blasters take dozens if not a few dozen shots to kill something. Combat looks slow and boring as crap. This is suppose to be one of the best new games coming out soon and that is what we have to look forward to?
If this is suppose to be Star Wars - I am not seeing it.

Ah yes, Everything should be one shot kills . . . well except when they are attacking you, right? Sorry, but a one shot kill from a sniper in a FPS may be all the rage, but that doesn't work in ANY other type of game. All's it does is make people rage quit in short order. Anyways though, you are entitled to your opinion and please do enjoy whatever game you will be settling on. Me? I'm playing SWTOR!

It's suppose to be a mmorpg with a theme of star wars. Since this is a game, having lightsabers one shot killing would be stupid. As to it not being true to star wars, well, star wars isnt' real it's made up.

If they wished to make it more Star Warsy, make it like Star Wars. Lightsabers are awesomely deadly weapons. Treat them as such. Blasters should not take a dozen shots to kill anything, other than a shielded enemy(then it might take a few extra shots depending on the strength of the blaster).
If they really want to make it like Star Wars allow players to kill things faster and just throw more mobs at them. That is how it is done in the movies. What they have done here is create a whack-the-mole grind game. Seriously....do you honestly feel that a lightsaber should be relegated to being a pathetic weapon as it is in this game?

I haven't seen it on the store shelves if they do. Ah well, we can of course trust ALL information we get from bloggers. I mena, just look at all the good info we got from EA LOUSE!

So you want believe that realism (I hate using that word in a made-up universe) should trump gameplay huh? Apply your assesment to pretty much every other MMO out there equally then.

Says the lady playing what.. WoW and EvE?
But it is, afterall, your opinion. I think some eyes will be blown open next week when PvP information drops though.
I'm going to post my own opinion hidden behind the 'review' of a website no one's ever heard of, because not only do I like to look like a douche, I like internet blogs telling me what to play.
Are we watching the same video? Because if we are - I am not seeing it.
A Cover system, a jump and attack from the jedi, blasters, explosions, all of this is boring to you?

It's suppose to be a mmorpg with a theme of star wars. Since this is a game, having lightsabers one shot killing would be stupid. As to it not being true to star wars, well, star wars isnt' real it's made up.

No, she means Mount and Blade of course!
Here I thought i was the only person to never hear of this website. I do a lot of searching for info on this game and Bit Gamer never sems to come up. Do they even have a magazine? I haven't seen it on the store shelves if they do. Ah well, we can of course trust ALL information we get from bloggers. I mena, just look at all the good info we got from EA LOUSE!

So you want believe that realism (I hate using that word in a made-up universe) should trump gameplay huh? Apply your assesment to pretty much every other MMO out there equally then.
