That is quite constant updating, whether it be just fixes and improvements or real content. You have to keep in mind that they aren't getting monthly fees, too.
Guild Wars yadda yadda blah blah blah WoW blah yadda yadda EQ2 blah blah blah SWG yadda yadda. Guild Wars got the high rating probably from half of you so quit whining.
Well i definitly think guild wars is a good game im getting pretty burnt out on it these days but 165 hours total playing time is pretty decent for the money i paid. Most single player games i burn through in like 10 hours and dont have as much fun. I think if you can accept guild wars for what it is a really fun online roleplaying game that isnt really massive but can be either cooperative or competitive or both youll have fun with it. If yer expecting an EQ or WOW type clone just dont buy it cause thats not what it is.
When the dust clears and all is said and done the truly great games always rise to the top. For instance when WoW first came out everyone was like, "OMG, this game is the greatest thing since s e x." LMAO! I was just the oppisite and saw through the BS during beta. Now the things I was saying about during beta and before release is being said by the very same people that told me I was full of it and they wished I would die. Same goes for some of the other recently released games like Lineage 2, Guild Wars.
Games that are soon to be released are POS all ready. Vanguard, D&L, Tabula Rasa(TB especially - this game is being touted as an MMORPG/FPS and it isn't!) are all just more of the same BS. The good thing is, since I know this I am going to save a lot of money. I'm sticking with the only game I think worth playing right now and that is Planetside - everything else is so blah.
Is Guild Wars overhyped? Let's be honest, are there any games (other than indie games) that ARE NOT overhyped? The whole point of marketing is to make you want to buy this or that product RIGHT NOW!!!!
Is Guild Wars a good game? That depends on who you are. If you're a white, upper-middle class college boy that's to socially awkward to get laid then GW is the most boring peice of shit you've ever played. You know this because you put 40+ hours into the first week and there was nothing to do after you maxed your stats and played all the quests. Guess you'll be "Hardercore than thou" on EQ2 for a couple more years before it'll be time to get a real job. If, on the other hand, you're a working stiff with a family and a job that consumes 48 to 60 hours of your time every week, you love Guild Wars. You know this becuase you only have about an hour or two to devote to gaming a night, if that. You can drop into the game, meet some buddies, go kick some ass and still get 8 hours of sleep before going to that job you absolutely despise. Hell, you can even imagine that goblin you're killing is your boss!
I myself am part of the latter group. I love GW for being everything that other MMOGs are not, Accessable and casual. I find most MMORPGs to be tedious and demanding. I shouldn't have to invest 20+ hours a week for several monthes to a game in order to feel rewarded. Those of us that work and have limited time are becoming the majority of gamers and if this section of the industry doesn't figure out a way to include us it'll be throwing away truckloads of cash. We have disposable income. We do not have disposable time.

We have disposable income. We do not have disposable time. Okay, please just step back and look at your post. Why would someone's ethnic background play ANY ROLE what-so-ever on whether they enjoy Guild Wars or not? The game is not racial. Games should be appealing to everyone, not just the casual gamer. The laid part was also unneeded. Yes, im sure that all people who play EQ2 don't have serious jobs, since most of the players are over 21 and it is one of the most mature communities. If I had a job which I don't but I do have school 40 hours a week then I would hate this game just as much. Are you kidding me? World of Warcraft was just released! Are you going to whine about the casual players? I hope you're kidding...
It was less a matter of ethnicity and more a matter of financial and social status. If you don't think upper -middle class white people have it better than working class blacks or hispanics then you're living in a fantasy world. And yes, the crack about not being able to get laid was an antagonizing statement but you really do have to question the social life of someone that camps in front of the computer for 20 to 40 hours a week. And 40 hours of school a week? When I was in college I had a work load of about 5 classes a week (12 student hours) and I spent around 1 to 2 hours a night studying, if that. Puh-leeze!!!
I do agree that games should be made for everyone, but MMORPGs have never been for everybody. Casual gamers are the biggest market and it just makes good business sense to go after that market. After all, who has more money? A high school student or a working wage slave? I rest my case.
P.S. Use a spell checker and a grammar checker. If you don't know when to use "your" and "you're" then you obviously haven't been paying enough attention to that school you spend 40 hours a week "working" at.

Ethnicity does not need to be brought into MMORPGs like that. I am 14 and am on the computer probably around 30 hours a week but am just as social if not more than most people. I'm aware of the difference between your and you're. I don't need you knocking on me for grammar. A working wage(-slave, as there are none) person would have more money than some kid in high school. If you did go to college as you said, then I don't think you need to be worrying about working class being able to play the game.
Game is overhyped, and I have the collectors edition to prove it. Is it a bad game, no, is the solo game limited yes. The trick to finding longer lasting amusement in the game is to Guild vs Guild or Tomb Pvp. Getting into a good guild so you regularly have competant people to play with is also a must. Picking up unranked newbies in a pick up group (pug) is a lesson in futility.
Ive leveled 3 characters through the single player missions entirely, because it was fun? no, i needed to unlock the skills so i have access to other classes as my guild needs me. Because to me, thats the only fun left, its named "Guild Wars" for a reason, its all about pvp, if thats not for you, it has a fairly decent single player driven story arc, that can last about 40+ hours. I say single player, because it feels like that. morpg, multiplayer online rpg, leave out the massive.
Why should thowsand persons say that a game played by hundreds of thowsand suck and will be down fast?
I think that kind of persons hate when other people say that eating at KFC suck to a friend just cause he likes eating there. so whats the purpose?
I also ate american-like sport fans saying that soccer suck and its called sucker, just because they like american football better. But if you looked better you'll see that soccer its getting bigger and bigger. Sorry bout this example but i hate peolpe that try to tell other people what to play or joiy.
By the way, i play guildwars since november and still playin every day. i play 2hours/day and always have great fun. And Guildwars its not like anyothers of the genre. not even diablo. If you are in a competitive guild you understand what i'm saying.
Just to help others to enjoy their true genre. plz think better what you want to do with your life and how you wanna spend your lifetime.

LOL, Jimmy that is great pretty much to the point.
I am one of the later also and while I cannot say I LOVE Guild Wars, I do enjoy the game and really enjoy being able to compete with the UBERGAMERS that spend 80+ hours a week playing so that they can have the +25 Sword of UBERHOOD. It's funny that when the playing field is leveled somewhat there is so many people that come out about how terrible it is and that the game sucks.
While So many people say they hate GW, the hype meter is staying pretty high right now.. and how does that thing work? (sarcasam)
I can say I'm having fun with this game and intend to have fun with it for a good long time. The community is what keeps me playing. Yes, there are asshats like any MMO is going to have and the OP has a point about the lack of an auction house. In my experience, most of the people playing this are competent, mature enough not to grief, and loose enough to have fun.
Not everyone is going to like GW and I can deal with that. However, I think part of the trolling on this board about the GW comes from 1337 kiddie fanbois out of school for the summer that are pissed of that GW is stealing some thunder from their MMOs because of it's uniqueness. This MMO is not about experience treadmills, getting the best gear, and getting your ass kissed once you reach the level cap. It's about skill and strategy. I've also had the pleasure of relatively bug/lag free gameplay. This game has performed better that others where I've paid a monthly fee.
If GW isn't for you, I'm not going to spend time engaging in a flame war. I'll just give you the traditional MMO send off:
Originally posted by joerii I think you guys need to explore the game further. If you've only been playing for a month, i think you've only seen something like 10 % of the game, unless your one of those poor unemployed, single, fat middle aged nerd who playes 24/7 but i'm getting off topic.
Personaly i'm one of these thin, married and employed people (working from home) who playes games as close to 24/7 as possible.
played guild wars for a few weeks as pretty much my only game (with my wife playing with me, as we do with all games) foolishly we set up our own guild, and found very few people to invite, as even just a few days after launch everyone seemed to be either guilded or didnt want a guild, but we found about 20 or so.
The game did look great, but personaly i think the RPG side of the game gets very dull very quickly. All the missions are very liniar, its kinda nice touch to have scinematics, but you soon hate all the people in them, and i've still to this day no idea what that horn of thunder did that i've seen the schinematic for about 5 times. prince irritating blows it, the char mill about, you continue killing them like normal...
IMO the PVP can be really fun if you get in a good group or a good guild and THAT is what the game is all about. the rest was to make a few quick bucks off people that wanted an RPG. the pvp is really good, very strategic (if you aint playing with idiots) and is the pest PVP i've experienced in any MMO, although i still to this day aint sure if it counts as an MMO, as its all instanced. its more like diablo or something with a 3D loby that everyone can have their cahracter running around it, getting a group together.
good game for PVP, but i wouldnt say 8.7 either. unless your a casual gamer mebies
Originally posted by newbinator I think GW is overrated, but then so is WoW and many other games. I tried GW during the preview event and a few hours is all it took for me to know I'd never buy the game, the PvP was ok but didn't come close to what I've experienced in DAOC.
Yes, that's right. It's almost fair to say it's normal for new games to be overrated. It will not satisfy everyone's taste. The developers have a vision in mind to guide them in making the game and some players will not agree on what they see as a result of that vision and philosopy.
As said before there are lots positive reviews from gamesites, but of course most the important reviews comes from the playerbase but with a mixed reaction. In my opinion Guild Wars was not ----rated'. It just depends player's perspective about the game. People who weren't happy tends to think it's overrated and those who liked the game will probably say it was 'about right'.
So far the game has satisfied me with their promises of updates and future contents, both pve and pvp aspects. But there is still room for improvements and it definetly needs to work on the controversial HoH, WaW, SoC, disconnects plus additional storage and character customization.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
The thing thats good about guildwars is that its not realy a mmo to me its kinda like my war game i play soldner- i just come on for a little kill bunch of peeps then log off and dont worry about my character advancment. I think its something fresh

I think that is a fair assessment. But the game has not just satisfied me, I guess I just came in with expectations that the game did not meet.

I will never consider guild wars an actual MMORPG but instead a uber diable/dungeon siege style game with every instance being like someones server.
