Well honestly did you expect rift to really last? its honestly just generic mmorpg #291736 in a market flooded by casual generic mmo garbage. They should stop trying to be wow 2.0 and start doing their own things imo. If you wanna take players away from WoW, you DO NOT want to try to clone it, because people who left WoW most likely want a new experence, which is something bascally no mmorpg gives now a days with all the generic crap the mmorpg devs keep spewing out.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

Bullshit.
You know why?
Because if they hated 'generic MMO' they wouldn't even have purchased Rift just like happened with FFXIV when people didn't like it in the beta: there have been extensive and many beta periods, which made it clear what kind of MMO Rift was. Still, despite the naysayers and themepark haters, Rift's launch was hugely successful.
What (most) people want is simply entertaining gameplay, so if a game has enough content that offers that, they'll stay, if it's lacking in their eyes or becomes less for example when they reach level cap, they'll go.

No, I didn't really expect it to last. However I have kept an eye on it just to see if releasing in a more stable state makes much of a difference. Looks like the blandness of it won out over the stability.
Considering Rift was the top selling PC game in March and the game has been out for two months, I think it's a little early to say the game is dead or dying. Wishful thinking/hoping is all I'm reading here.
I dont think it has as much to do with that people require a lot more than the standard grind, farm and battleground MMO.
I played rift, and when I was done with it, I quit. Most MMO's I play nowadays i play for the experience. I'm far beyond the grind for equipment until you get bored and quit early ages of MMO'nes. The grind for equipment, raidpoints and raidrolls are in retrospective pointless and gave me naught. I can join a raid for the experience, but not much more. Since the standard MMO delivers very few world/player affecting opportunities, people quit when they've experienced most of the content. Most players I know are bored of killing x of y and deliver a to b at c.
Its more that Rift brings little new to the table for the longterm player.
Its more that Rift brings little new to the table for the longterm player.
And what does a 'Longterm player' wants? More content... Which is exactly a repeat of what he did before but portrayed another way with leet rewards that basically have higher stats. I just don't understand that argument. This game is like 2 months old, perhaps 3... I think it will surprise you as far as what it will 'bring'.
People have stuck with WoW and it never really offered or brought anything new to the table except more (different) shinies. New quests, new raids, new stuff. Yet people, no, longterm gamers are still playing it. Cuz it's fun and their friends are playing and the community is just so damn cute.
As for the OP subject, I can't say for EU servers but US RP-PvE servers are hitting pretty big numbers these days! Yay!

Rift's dead. Some people are still playing because they're waiting for GW2 and SW:ToR, but pretty much nobody takes Rift seriously anymore. "Next-gen" didn't happen, only a bunch of empty promises and a legendary fail with that world event.
The world is tiny if compared to WoW+expansions. The setting is generic fantasy. The storyline is for 12 years old kids. All playable races look the same. Nothing ever happens in any zone except rfits/invasions and you get fed up with them very quickly. Dungeons and bosses are boring. Warfront maps are like... WTF?! Whoever made them, I hope he was fired. Class balance is nowhere to be found. Competitive PvP? Not even in the future plans.
Heck, the game doesn't even have API for addons.
Rift is one of the biggest disappointments we've seen in years. And we've seen many of those.

First you start to play a game that does what the last 10 mainstream MMO's did, create a horrible grind for gear at max level.
Then you start wondering why people get bored so fast after a few months.
All Rift will do, is introduce more gear, more dungeons, more dailies. Nothing that really will increase things to do like housing, world build events, castle defence, or all the other things that made UO, EQ and DAOC great games.
Stil, you keep buying the same kind of MMO next month/year, thereby emphasizing to the gaming industry that you support the next grind-for-epics single player online job.
Currently playing browser games. Waiting for Albion Online, Citadel of Sorcery and Camelot Unchained. Played: almost all MMO pre 2007

have to agree that the dungeons encounters are lacking and the class balance at this point is one of the worst i seen in any mmo even WAR.
they promised class balance in patch 1.2 but tbh they should have done small hotfixes after patch 1.1 to show clients that they are acknowledging the problem rather then wait a month and then comment that there is indeed a need to redo balance again but it will have to wait for next patch.
Well I don't put much stock in xfire since if you use it (the only way they get play hours) you have to download it and run it along with whatever game you are playing so your computer can send data back to the server. So the results do not display all the players, just a random (like who knows) amount.
it is a little interesting tho ... ant today it shows rift at number 2 on the mmo list.
This reminds me of Aion. ~3 months after its worldwide release Aion was still in the XFire top 10 but signs of decline were there for those who had eyes to see. Still, fanboys were in total denial mode. Now, ~1.5 years later, Aion popularity outside of Korea is a joke.
Rift goes downhill much faster. I doubt it had more than 500k active subs initially. Now it's probably down to 250k or so. And let's not forget about people who bought 3-6 months long subs just because beta looked promising. How many of them are going to resub remains to be seen.

Well according to xfire that you all take so seriously (it is not a real statistic just those that have crossfire loaaded on their computers are countedf) shows wow as number 1 and aeon as number 14 and rift as number 11 ... this list includes all online games it appears, not just mmo's ... like number 2 is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (not an MMO I think) StarCraft II (which I know is not an mmo) is number 5,
(again Click the "rank" link on the header to order games by ranking.) The mmo rank numbers are from the list of all games on xfire. but you can see the order of the lines and count down to your game to see where it ranks in the mmo's.
NOTE: This is all crossfire's data (as of 22:15 EST) not mine. I think xfire's numbers are bogus as many many gamers do not use crossfire (including me)

Except it has nowhere near 25 total and only 9 english-speaking servers for EU/NA: http://aionstatus.com/
9 english-speaking servers is exactly what WAR had pre-1.4. Should we deem WAR a successful and popular MMO then? No? Then I suggest you stop twisting facts and spreading misinformation.
And speaking of "bucketloads of money" - where did you get this info?

Well, I'm going to quote Sukiyaki's post because his seems even more accurate:

That's a hell of a lot more than what WAR has.
Their official financial reports have the financial figures for Aion's revenues.

Second in the world means nothing because they have strange tastes there in Asia. But third in the West? Laughable.
The narrowminded prejudice and bigotry is appalling and doesn't even deserve an answer.
On a sidenote, Blizzard takes their gamers in Asia seriously enough to include them in their figures, because without Asia/China, I'd gather their many times claimed subs figures would be a hell of a lot less, more like 5 million and less instead of the vaunted 12 million.
But you only have to look at how well Aion is doing in the ranking in Xfire, and how much revenue they're generating to know that there's hardly any MMO that does better, despite how some people hate to have MMO's made in Asia to be that high on the list.
It's actually your comments, not his, that are bigoted and ignorant of all the facts.
edit: anyway, this is going far too offtopic, so I'm going to leave it at this. I suggest you do your research better next time instead of falling back on prejudices.

Playing on Argent the RP-PvE server, Meridian was packed when I logged off. There was no shortage of lvl 20-30 players for the invasion in Stonefield yesterday and no shortage of lvl 50's looking for expert dungeon parties today. X-fire shows it as number 2 (not that I hold by that) and my experience says it's doing fine where I am, definitely not a ghost town.
There as been alot of talk lately about RIFT population sever instabilites. Some server are said to be crowded - but now more and more posts are coming out that alot of servers are emptying really fast.
Trion has now found a reason to start closing topics that point out that some servers are totally empty- even during peak hours.
Its actually very easy to check how many ppl are online on each server when they become so totally empty. The /who is limited to 28 lines. Over the past 3-4 days.. my server has NEVER had 28 characters at lvl 50 for each class in game. I did a total headcount on the server last monday 19:30-20:00 (server time) on guardian site and we had 359 ppl online. Thats in TOTAL.
The solution that Trion is finding atm is to hide these facts. Close posts about it and try instead to show images with server full msg - that happened during an awfull World event - where the solution from TRION was to limit the number of players online to few hundreds to prevent server collapse.
Here is an example of a post that is on General chat that has been closed.

Now about 1.5 years later Aion is still on spot no.13 on xfire (where even WoW droped down to second place by now), still is the third most popular MMORPG in the West and second in the world (with several dozen server online in China, 13 in the West, 5 in Russia and over a dozen in Southeastasia (outside of Korea, where it has close to a Million player allone)
That's a hell of a lot more than what WAR has.
Their official financial reports have the financial figures for Aion's revenues.
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
So what your saying is...is RIFT is not the wow killer after all.....................GASP!
I don`t understand how could this be? People on www.MMORPG.com were saying it was awesome and everyone was leaving wow!?!?!?
WTFs going on????
