MMORPG.com Lead Writer Bill Murphy takes a bit of a break from 'traditional' MMORPGs with The List this week. Bill checks out one of the most keenly anticipated MMORTS titles coming: Age of Empires Online. Read The List: The Age of Empires Online Edition and weigh in with a few thoughts of your own in the comments.
We’ll probably be mostly covering AoE Online over at RTS Guru, but seeing how it’s shaping up to be a pretty interesting MMORTS, I thought I’d take some time this week to lay out some knowledge about the upcoming title. I’ve spent a little time in the beta now, and I’m happy to report that even with the cartoon graphical style Age of Empires Online seems a lot like the days of old for the franchise, with a nifty new “massive” feel added in on top. It’s shaping up to be a pretty fun and addictive game, but one that there isn’t a whole lot of chatter about just yet. In essence it seems like a return to form for the Age franchise, but in an entirely new package that has some folks worried about the dreaded Microsoft “Cash Grab”. So let’s talk about a few things I didn’t know concerning the title, and feel free to discuss and add to this list below.

Yeah i was looking at this game earlier and it looked like a fun game to pass some downtime with.. Possibley inbetween Rift and Gears 3 beta i can get a few hours each day of enjoyment out of this game.. And the fact that in game gear and such isnt being sold in the cash shop is great, i'am always for being sold content over actual gear.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
Just for reference, Company of Heroes Online did the whole "content only shop" which included special units.
The game didn't even make it out of beta because those units were "pay to win".
I'd rather they had consumables like XP buffs and cosmetic items in the shop than units.
I find your comments interesteing... because I feel that COHO failed for the opposite reason.
None of the items that you could buy provided any real advantage. All of the 'good' stuff was random drop only. There was a limited amount of slots available, so there was no point buying lesser items, when you would just be replacing them with the better drops. There was also an overabundance of in game currency, you literally had so much that you could not spend it all.
These were the problems that led the publisher to decide that they were not going to make any money (even the players couldnt see any reason to spend money). They decided to drop the game, and move resources to something with more potential. It is a bit sad, because the game did have good potential, they just didnt know how to capitolize on it.
guys i am from egypt and when i try to redeem key all country was only from europe and cant find egypt are i will able to download game and play it or they make game for europe and america
It is alot of fun to play and it is made for both the hardcores and casuals. Good job!
The special units in the cash shop may kill it, but that seems like this game's only possible failing. I'm slightly dissappointed by it not being a fully open world, but it makes sense in a design perspective considering population and resources.
In case it doesn't ruin itself, this game is gearing up to be pretty darn good. I wasted so much of my teens playing all of the AoE games but it was time well wasted.
see some gameplay on mt channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRajVCgPYBA
I loved AoE2 and AoE3, It looks like it could be a lot of fun. For some reason I didn't get stuck on SC2 like I expected.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I downloaded and am playing the beta now. Seems very polished and with nice production values. Im still in tutorial but its seems very AoE!
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I have a spare beta key if anyone is interested, first one to message me gets it basically
cool, i'll have to check this out.
depends on which ip's are accepted into the main server network.. i cant imagine egypt would be exempt but failing that you could try aquiring a key from an europen player or american player.. best thing to do is go to the age of empires online website and contact the support team and ask them directly if egypt is included.
It looks too cartoonish for me...garbage, I'll pass.
Well, its a whole lot better than a horrible mess that was "Age of Empires III:IntheNameOnly".
I could care less about art style as long as it returns to the actual AoE feeling instead of the crap we got for third part...
# A GRIM, ODD, ARCANE SKY
# ANY GOD, I MARK SACRED
# A MASKED CRY ADORING
# A DREAMY, SICK DRAGON
there is no IP filter. just fake the country & postal code part. though probably you can't buy anything when game goes stable.
The game looks very promising, but it all depends on what they stock in the item shop.
This game implement quests very well for a RTS. Very impressed. First RTS that does this.
Is there anything being done about these spammers?
Also the gameplay is pretty good and feels very much like AOE2. Although, I hope this game's success doesn't deter them from making a 4th game.
I enjoyed AOE Online, it's a pretty solid game to pass the time away with. The quests get pretty challenging later in the game; which, is fun if you are into RTS games. The way the game plays reminds me of Age of Mythology; but, minus the mythical creatures and such.

Am I the only one that thinks of "area of effect" when they see AoE? Stupid MMO's ruining acronyms for me.
Why did it oblige (hard sell) me to register with Xbox live? I don't have an Xbox360. And if you're going to grab my personal information why did you lock me into UK just because I have .uk email address? There's nowhere I can proceed and put my correct address.
Don't worry, Egypt isn't even in the game yet. It's been "Offline" forever
oh, and there is no content yet at 40, kinda makes me sad. But beyond that, great game (NDA was lifted btw)
It's a pretty cool game, even if they did pull a "Battlefield Heroes" and make it a cartoon to "appear" less violent than it actually is (you can still run down and mercilessly slaughter your opponents gatherers )..
It kinda feels though as if you will eventually be able to learn every talent.. Can someone verify this for me, at the max level are we all going to be built the exact same way or do we actually specialize?
Game sucks. I dont know what you fools are smoking. Themepark MMO type gear? Non-connected cities? This is a quest-driven carrot-stick game. Lack of originality and linear gameplay makes me sad that this is where Age of Empires has gone. Tis a shame. Thumbs down.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
