Order & Chaos Online: First Look

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller is an on-the-go kind of guy. With that in mind, his eye was caught by the iMMO title, Order and Chaos and by the fact that he can play an orc. Heady stuff for Garrett! Find out what he discovered in his first look article about the iOS MMO, Order and Chaos. Played it? Have some thoughts about the article? Let us know in the comments.

First, I chose the game because it was listed as an RPG where I could play an Orc. I know that sounds funny, but I do love Orcs and have been waiting for a fun Orc style iGame to play. As I created my account and character I soon realized, what a minute…this is an MMO! How did we miss this? Well we did. The interface was pretty detailed for a mobile game and the third person play style fit well with normal MMO appearances.

    Nice. Looks better than WOW.

I noticed the image before anything else and thought that WAS WoW.

Perhaps I'll be missing out on something or perhaps not, but since it looks exactly like

WoW I'm not going to touch it. Creators need to get their heads out of their asses and

start coming up with their own ideas/visions. I'm certain their wallets will never notice my

cash missing but hopefully there are a handful more of people like me that will leave it a lone

as well. We'll never see good change if we keep on feeding the old.

Not sure why they would bother writing a game as seemingly complete as this without creating their own art.

That being said, I will buy it and likely subscribe if only to prove a mobile MMO is do-able so more companies jump on the bandwagon.

How is an MMO on the iOS old? There are certain limitations on these devices that will most assuredly make the game different even IF they did try to copy WoW as closely as possible. That's like saying I haved played FPS games on the console, why would I bother to play any on the PC? Stop being such a negative nancy.

I am excited to start seeing iOS MMOs, regardless of the form of the game. If this is a success then we might see more innovation and more risks taken in the iOS market.

It's like you people have never heard of Gameloft before.  They look at a best selling game, then copy it as closely as possible without getting sued.

That's their whole thing.  That's what they DO.  Originality is for schlubs, Gameloft steals everything they can.  This is probably the game MOST appropriately called a WoW clone, because their design philosophy is 'Play a game a lot, then see how much we can steal from it.  Also, hiring artists to do original art is for chumps.'

There are several Ios MMOs out now. Can't recall the names. There is another popular one where you play a humanoid animal type. I tried it but am spoiled by PC MMO graphics. There are limitations but playing an MMO on a Ipad does have its appeal.

I think this is a cool idea. In spite of or perhaps because i do not have a phone capable of playing such a game i believe they should make more phone mmo's!

I don't think he mentioned anything about iOS/mobile device gaming being a problem, he clearly stated that his problem was with it's obvious a complete mirroring of WOW.

Nah, it's a WoW clone, because that's what Gameloft does.  Clone games.  I don't call any other game WoW clones, but Gameloft is FAMOUS for liberally copying from successful game franchises.

Take a look at 'Green Farm'.  It's basically Farmville...

... or how about 'Guitar Rock Tour', which is basically Guitar Hero?

That's their MO.  They also have a game that's a LOT like Starcraft that I can't remember the title of, offhand.  ... among other games.

Clone or not,  it's a fun game  and portable obviously, not something i would sit at for hours  but a fun mmo fix  for when your on the road,  Pocket legends  is another

Oh, nobody denies that they're really GOOD at making games, specifically on portable systems/mobile devices.

It's pretty impressive how well they can bring a PC title over to the iPad. :)

It's just... they're the Hong Kong of video game companies. XD

And my point was that moving a game very similar to WoW onto a new platform such as the iOS will inadvertently cause changes in the gameplay and game mechanics. If people are offended about Gamelofts blatent copying of games then they can not buy their products (honestly I looked at their list of games and I don't think I've ever bought a single one). I am so desensitized to the "WoW Clone" QQ on these forums that when a game comes out that is REALLY a clone people slamming it just for being a WoW Clone doesn't even register as a valid argument any more.

Why do find some ppl it so important to start nitpicking about every little detail to show that its not a WoW clone? Its as if those ppl are afraid being caught enjoying a WoW clone. The kneejerk reactions surrounding this are getting kind of silly.

Apparently a good WoW clone sells and can be an enjoyable game. And a lot of ppl (especially the ones that dont visit gameforums) dont care if its a clone of whatever game. Only thing matters for them is that they enjoy it.

I have been playing O&C since launch a litttle over two weeks.  I think it is great for a mobile mmorpg.  I have been leveling slow and have a hunter level 20, Monk and Mage level 10 and a Warrior just starting.   Level cap is 60. You can only have 3 toons free and if you want a 4th it will cost you real money(cheap).  One more thing it cost $6.99 to download not $5.99.   There is a lot more to this game then you would think:

pve, pvp, crafting(tailoring, leatherworker, blacksmith), mail, auction house, different level gear from common up to legendary.   You pay $6.99 for the game downlaod and it includes 3 free months.  After that you can pay $.99 1 month $1.99 3 months or $2.99 for 6 months.  You can buy runes and gold for real money.  You don't need either to play.  Runes are used for vanity items like pets etc.  You sort of need gold on the early levels but have plenty of gold once you get to a higher level.  Warrior is tank or dps, Monk is healer or dps, Hunter is archer(WoW hunter without pet) or assasin(Rogue). Mage can ge fire or frost dps.  You can combine spells from both class trees or go all one tree.  Travel is buy scrolls or teleports.  There is a offical forum and pod cast and they supposedly are working on updates.  They have had minor updates to fix bugs.

I also play the other main mobile mmorpg Pocket Legends.  I do like both but O&C is a lot better IMO.  There are 2-3 more mobile mmorpg's coming out this year.  They do look good.  One is Blackstar a scifi mmorpg and one is World of Midguard fantasy mmorpg's.  They both look really good.

How about trying to not be so aggressive? I have worked for Gameloft, which is a sister company of Ubisoft btw, in the past and they are not that bad. There is good people working there and they actually DO have their own artists. Sure they will make games similar to others but most companies do. Everyone copies everyone else. If a video has not done it before, a table top game has.

So please be a little respecful to companies that try to make games fun, especially when they have been around for as long as Gameloft.

I am not a fan of wow, but I would play this game just because of the portablility of the game. I just have to wait for the iphone 5, because i am not going to waste my upgrade on an iphone 4, and my iphone 3g wont run the game.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

Gameloft has come a long way since (I read recently) previously coming from a J2EE on mobiles previously. They take any game genre eg (FPS - Nova, Starfront - SC2 and MANY MORE!) and know what the public like to eat and therefore simply remake it with it should be said A LOT of polish. If anyone can polish a turd it's GL...

Thanks for the review, O&C (youtube) is definetly a working persistent mmo on the mobile. It does need the higher end devices and also wi-fi atm (Android is due later). As said it's a wow clone and very fine one at that, so for me I will not play as not my style but impressed with it as it's fully MMORPG (crafting, quests, pking!, pets and tons of skills... probably the best mmobile I've seen to date.

Pocket Legends is another very successful mmo but that is (as per GW) more coop mmog/dungeon crawler as per diablo with instanced dungeons. Still apples and oranges it plays over edge, 3G and wifi over many different device (low to high range) specs.

Spacetime Studios will be releasing Blackstar in a month or two and this will be CORPG (as per GW) Sci-Fi mobile mmo (mmobile) with much more story and instanced levels. Here's a recent interview with MMORPGitalia. It should be INNOVATIVE more than IMITATION though it won't have the excellent persistent feel of O&C.

Here's a list of other mmobiles
