According to a new post from NCSoft on the Lineage site, the North American game servers will be closing permanently on June 29, 2011. NCSoft indicates that the 'franchise is no longer profitable', hence the server closure.
As of today, no new accounts can be created. We will no longer charge anyone whose account is set to recurring billing, and Time Cards can no longer be used to add additional game time. We have reactivated all existing accounts in good standing, and everyone can play for free* for the remaining time that the servers are open.
We are committed to refunding any unused game time that might have already been applied to your account. If you are due a refund, refunds will be made automatically back to the method of payment that was originally used in most cases. Please see our refund policy for details.
Nyx, Jetzen, and Unicycle plan to go out with a bang. We will not be making any additional content updates, but we do have US Ruleset changes and lots of great events planned for the next two months. We want to give you every opportunity to make all of your remaining Lineage dreams come true. We hope that everyone will stick around to have fun with the game you love in the time we have left.

I always hate to see them die. My condolences, Lineage folks.
This news wounds me.... Lineage 1 was my first MMORPG many years ago, wondered how long it could last here in the states, especially since I think I read somewhere that it didn't support 64 bit systems.
For such an early game it had some decent concepts, better than some of the MMORPG's being created today from my view.
Guess I could always learn Korean. Still going strong over there I hear

Another one down for NCSoft.
I'am still pissed i missed this game when it launched.. ah well, looks like i can chalk up another game i'll never get to play like Hellgate london, Tabula Rasa, and APB even tho i might still get a chance now that its F2P.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
I thoroughly enjoyed Tabula Rasa even though most people didn't. I always thought it was NCSoft's best work slightly ahead of CoX.
Doesn't mean you can't play on Eastern servers, maybe someone will come up with a mod to transform the language to English or something. Closing down something that isn't making you money is a smart thing to do nonetheless.
The NC Soft axe strikes again!
grind fest.... good riddance!
I am a bit shocked with the news. I haven't played Linage myself, but now I'll never know what it will be like (don't speak Korean, so that's no option for me )
AAside from teh news of closure, I have to say that NCSoft once again gives a good refund to the current players (even betetr then when they closed down TR).
can i still play on my BETA account ? do i make a new account ?
Well, it had a good run, can't deny that.
They need a new slogan like NCSoft we close more mmogs than most devlopers make.
My very first Mmo many years ago, I even resubbed last month just to see it all again. Lineage 1, I will miss you dearly =(
Waiting on Guild Wars 2
SOE holds that as a title.
Always bad to hear an MMO close down. Never tried Lineage but I did try Lineage 2 and didn't care for it. I played TR from launch til close. Hoping Firefly will at least come up to par with TR.
EDIT: Firefall*
Your saying this as if it's strange that a company drops support of a 12+ year old game, and one that even has a sequel.
Yeah, sorry about that. I think I was looking at one of the recent quarterly reports and it did seem to have a decent following.

Not to mention it's only NA servers being closed. The rest remain running.

...probably alot of westerners also as they've had a long-run. Does it impact Lineage2 also?
May 11, 2011 -
After much deliberation, NCsoft has made the difficult decision to shut down Lineage servers in its Western markets. Unfortunately, after more than 10 years, the original Lineage franchise is no longer financially viable in the West.
I don't get all the hate on Lineage? It's been around for 10 years in the West. That's a long time for ANY MMO, especially one made for a Korean market that (to my knowledge), didn't see a ton of changes coming over.
It's sad to see ANY MMO close shop, especially one that's been around for so long. (Note: I never played the game so i have no attachment to it).
There are still people who play lineage.
er, just not "a lot".
I think Lineage 2 is still viable. looking around the U.S. server there were still a decent amount of people playing.

Care to list all the MMOs SOE has closed down? The Agency doesn't count, it was never released.
1. The Matrix Online.
2. ....
Wow.
This will be the second 20th century MMO, and the longest running MMO, to ever shut down.
Impressive lifetime.. I am sure Lineage II will still be around when we are hooked up to virtual reality machines..
Can you still play Hellgate London single player? I was fun even offline.
